*Long-term monthly averages.*
The year runs from a mild, damp winter to a hot, dry summer, with a wet autumn that arrives in October.
Three months tip the year. July is the driest, with 2 rainy days and 10 hours of sun. August is the hottest, with a low of 71°F (21°C) at night. November is the wettest, with 10 rainy days.
November is the hard month for anyone planning long days outdoors. It rains on 10 days, the sun shows for only 4 hours a day, and highs sit at 65°F (18°C). Museums and covered galleries suit those days, such as Castel Nuovo with its civic museum and Gallerie d’Italia.
When can you swim in Naples?
The sea passes 68°F (20°C) from June to October. May, at 66°F, and November, at 67°F, stay just below that mark, so those months suit a quick dip at best.
These are monthly averages.
When is Naples cheapest and least crowded?
The festival calendar sets the lively months. The city describes its tourism as constantly growing, so booking rooms ahead for summer and for festival weekends is sensible.
Winter has a cost. Sunshine falls to 3 or 4 hours a day from November to February, and 9 or 10 days a month are rainy. Boat trips still run, though. SNAV hydrofoils to Procida leave daily all year round.
November is the month to skip for a first visit. A winter visit to museums and indoor sights is a better fit.
Festivals and events in Naples through the year
Patron saint festivals, June to October
They include solemn masses, processions, concerts and shows in churches, squares and streets.
The calendar opens on June 1 at 9 p.m. with the Festa di Sant’Erasmo. It closes on October 17 with the Festa di San Gaetano Errico, at 8 p.m. in Secondigliano. The Festa del Carmine falls on July 15 at 9 p.m. in Piazza del Carmine. These festivals are free.
Estate a Napoli, July to early October
It falls in the stretch when July highs reach 87°F (30°C) and the month has only 2 rainy days.
Its dates overlap the swimming season from June to October, which makes July, August and September the months that combine sea, sun and events.
