Cold but workable. Afternoons reach 45°F (7°C) and nights fall to 31°F (0°C), so a warm coat is the main piece of gear and frost is possible at dawn.
Plan the Duomo terraces and the walk to Brera for the drier days, and keep the museum rooms for the wet ones. Daylight lasts 9 hours 3 minutes in mid-January, so outdoor sights go in the middle of the day.
December is almost the same on temperature, with an afternoon high of 46°F (8°C), but it brings six rainy days and a shorter day of 8 hours 43 minutes. February is milder at 50°F (10°C) for the afternoon high and 33°F (1°C) at night, with the same five rainy days as January and 10 hours 21 minutes of daylight.
What to do in Milan in January
The Duomo, its terraces and its museum
The Duomo complex is more than the cathedral. It also takes in the Archaeological Area, the Terraces and the Museum. The Madonnina d’oro stands on the main pinnacle, and the cathedral stands on Piazza del Duomo.
The Duomo Museum has 26 rooms, which makes it a good indoor stop on a rainy afternoon. The terraces are reached by stairs and are open to the wind, so wear gloves. The Duomo Smart Experience (augmented reality, virtual reality, webcam and a 3D tour) lets you see the building before you go.
Sforza Castle and its museums
One ticket covers all the Sforza Castle museums, including the Ancient Egypt Gallery. The museums are closed on Mondays, so put the castle on another day. The Panoramic Battlements give separate access to a stretch of the patrol walkways, a short outdoor walk best saved for a clear, dry day.
Guided tours of the museums are organized by Ad Artem.
The Pinacoteca di Brera
The Pinacoteca has 38 rooms and 500 works on display, from the 14th to the 19th century, by Italian and foreign artists. The entrance is at Via Brera 28.
Brera is a few steps from the Duomo and Montenapoleone. On foot from the Duomo it takes about 12 to 15 minutes. The Lanza (M2, green) and Montenapoleone (M3, yellow) metro stops are each about 5 minutes away on foot.
The Navigli on foot and by boat
The guided tour combines a walk and a boat cruise. It starts near the Basilica di Sant’Eustorgio and ends with a walk along the alzaia of the Naviglio Grande. Along the way, the boat passes the Vicolo dei Lavandai, one of the wash-houses where women washed Milan’s clothes for centuries.
The boat departs from Alzaia Naviglio Grande 4, and the meeting point is Via San Marco 48. The route is divided into two stages, the first in the north of the city near the Conca dell’Incoronata, a lock designed by Leonardo. Confirm the tour is running on your day, and dress for the cold on the water.
Teatro alla Scala
La Scala offers guided tours in Italian, English and French at some times of day. The box office is on Piazza della Scala. Performances can also be watched live or on demand by streaming, which helps if the tour times do not fit your day.
What to pack for Milan in January
January in Milan asks for warm layers and something for rain. Each item below comes from the month’s weather and the sights above.
- A warm coat: afternoons reach only 45°F (7°C) and nights hover around freezing.
- Hat and gloves for the Navigli boat tour, the alzaia walk and the Duomo terraces.
- Comfortable shoes: the Duomo terraces are reached by stairs, and the walk from the Duomo to Brera takes 12 to 15 minutes.
- Layers you can take off, because the Pinacoteca di Brera and the Sforza Castle museums are indoors.
What to know before visiting Milan in January
The Sforza Castle museums are closed on Mondays, so schedule them for another day. Area C, the restricted zone of the historical center, is active Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and not on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. Cars pay €7.50 within the day after entering. Electric and hybrid cars enter free.
The State Department lists Italy at Level 2, Exercise increased caution, due to terrorism, in an advisory issued September 10, 2026. It recommends enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for updates and alerts from the U.S. embassy or consulate, and it highly recommends buying travel insurance before you travel.
Is January a good time to visit Milan?
Yes, for travelers who want museums, a cathedral and the opera more than long days outdoors. January fills the days with indoor visits, and the cold is manageable with a good coat.
December has a similar high, one more rainy day than January and the shortest days of the three.
With children or anyone who feels the cold, February is the easier month. For museum-focused trips, January works well: the Duomo Museum, the Sforza Castle museums, Brera and the La Scala tours are all indoors.
