Three days in Milan cover the Duomo complex, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II and the Sforza Castle, with a day trip to Lake Como by train. The historic center is a restricted traffic zone on weekdays, so a car adds cost and the plan below leaves it out.

At a glance
- Recommended length: 3 days
- Main transport: trains for Lake Como; Area C limits cars in the center
- Area C hours: Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
- Area C day fee for cars: € 7,50
- Day trip: Varenna and Villa Carlotta on Lake Como
Is 3 days enough in Milan?
Three days is enough for the main sights. The Duomo complex alone has the Cathedral, the Archaeological Area, the Terraces and the Museum, and the Duomo Museum has 26 rooms. Add La Scala, the Galleria, the Sforza Castle and the Brera gardens, and the first two days fill up.
With one more day, add the Abbey of Chiaravalle, with its 13th-century cloister, or the Ambrosian Picture Gallery and the Church of San Maurizio. With one day less, drop Lake Como and stay in the city.
Lake Como is the piece that needs the most time, because the villas, Varenna and the castle above it all sit away from the center. If the lake matters to you, keep it and trim the museums.
When to plan 3 days in Milan
Winter is cool, with January highs of 45°F (7°C) and lows just below freezing. By May the highs reach 75°F (24°C), and by July 87°F (31°C), which makes long walks and Lake Como boat or garden days easy in late spring. May is the rainiest of these months, with about eight or nine rainy days, so pack a light rain jacket. July has about four rainy days and is the hottest, so plan indoor museum visits for the afternoon.
Getting around Milan in 3 days
Cars face Area C, a restricted zone of the historic center where driving is allowed on payment. The cameras run Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., and the zone is off on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. Cars pay € 7.50 within the day after entering, or € 22.50 within 7 days if they register on the portal. Electric and hybrid cars enter free.
For Lake Como, take the Trenord rail network. Varenna is served by rail, so the trip needs no car.
3 Days in Milan, day by day
Day 1: Duomo, Galleria and La Scala
Start at the Duomo, the symbol of the city. The complex includes the Cathedral, the Archaeological Area with remains of the Battistero di San Giovanni alle Fonti, the Terraces and the Museum. The Madonnina d’oro stands on the main pinnacle. Palazzo Reale is to the right of the Duomo.
The Museo del Novecento is inside Palazzo Arengario, a few steps from the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, which runs 196 meters. Everything is walkable, so a car is not needed.
For lunch, stay near the Galleria. Gardens such as the Guastalla Gardens, near the Duomo, make a quiet break in the afternoon.
Day 2: Sforza Castle and Brera
Begin at the Sforza Castle, then walk into Brera. The Orto Botanico di Brera, inside Palazzo di Brera, hosts more than 300 plant species. The Ambrosian Picture Gallery holds Leonardo’s Codex Atlanticus, the largest collection of his sheets.
Add the Church of San Maurizio, called the Sistine Chapel of Lombardy. Gardens such as Giardino della Villa Belgiojoso and the Giardini Indro Montanelli are good places to rest between visits.
In the evening, head to the Navigli. The Darsena, the old port, is on the boat tour, and the Vicolo dei Lavandai is where women washed clothes for centuries. The Conca dell’Incoronata, a lock designed by Leonardo, is at the entrance of via San Marco.
Day 3: Lake Como, Varenna and Villa Carlotta
Take a train to Lake Como. Varenna is a fishing village on the rail network, and Vezio Castle has stood above it for over a thousand years. Villa Carlotta is known for its botanical gardens and art museum, and Villa d’Este is another historic residence on the lake.
Villa Bernasconi Museum in Cernobbio can be added as a self-guided visit. Check return train times before you go and leave the lake early enough to be back in Milan for dinner.
