Lake Como in June: Lumaghitt Fireworks, 77°F Afternoons and Villa Gardens

June suits travelers who want warm afternoons, long evenings and a lake to cross by boat from one villa garden to the next. On June 24 the Lumaghitt, fireworks on the water for St John’s Day, gives the month a night worth staying up for.

The catch is summer traffic. Roads and parking get difficult on weekends, the ticket offices for the boats can have queues, and Villa del Balbianello can’t be reached by car at all.

Where to go on Lake Como in June

Bellagio

Bellagio is known as La Perla del Lago. The gardens of Villa Melzi stretch 800 meters along the lake, and in June’s long daylight they make an easy walk for the end of the afternoon. The Bellagio Lake Como office is on Piazza della Chiesa, if you need help planning the day.

Varenna

Varenna sits on the Lecco branch of the lake, on the eastern side. Villa Monastero is here, with the botanical garden of Villa Cipressi right next to it. The Passeggiata degli Innamorati, a walkway 350 meters over the lake, is a short stroll for the evening.

Tremezzina

Villa Carlotta stands in Tremezzo, in the Tremezzina area, at Via Statale 5605. It has an original Italian garden, which is the reason to come on a dry June morning. The villa also offers themed tours and workshops.

Lenno

Lenno is the village of Villa del Balbianello, and its lakeside market is held on Tuesdays. The nearest free parking for the villa is in Lenno.

Como

The city of Como has the Duomo, described as the last Gothic cathedral in Lombardy, plus the Broletto, the city tower and the Basilica of Sant’Abbondio. The Tempio Voltiano and the Pinacoteca civica belong to the city’s museum system. They make good stops when a shower passes.

Colico

Colico is where surfers wait for the Breva or the Tivano, the winds of Lake Como. It’s the spot for water sports on the lake, so bring that gear if sailing or surfing is part of your June.

Lumaghitt fireworks on June 24

If you’re in the area on June 24, stay until dark for the Lumaghitt, the fireworks on the water for St John’s Day. The Lumaghitt fireworks on the water on June 24 are the dated event of the month.

Daylight lasts 15 hours 40 minutes in mid-June, so dark comes late. Settle in near the water early and plan how you’ll get back to your bed before the show starts.

Villa del Balbianello and its terraces

The complex has the villa on 6 levels, the Loggia Durini, the Loggia Segrè with its historic park, and the Dosso di Lavedo. The ticket includes a guided tour of the interiors and a self-guided visit of the garden, terraces and Loggia Durini.

The villa can’t be reached by car. The closest free parking is Mercato Parking in Via Comoedia, in Lenno, and there is also paid parking on the same street. Since summer weekends bring heavy traffic, a weekday visit is easier.

Villa Serbelloni park and the Villa Melzi gardens in Bellagio

The Villa Serbelloni park can be visited on a 2-hour guided tour, in the morning or the afternoon, from Tuesday to Sunday. Plan the tour for one of those days.

Villa Melzi’s gardens are a separate visit and attract thousands of visitors every year. Put the guided tour in the morning and the gardens in the softer light of late afternoon.

The Greenway del Lago di Como

The Greenway is a walk of about 6 miles (10 km) from Colonno to Cadenabbia di Griante. You can cover it with the C110 bus line or the boat service.

June days are long and warm, so walk one way and take the bus or a boat back. Comfortable shoes matter more than speed here.

A boat day to the villas

A guided tour by reservation visits Villa del Balbianello, Villa Carlotta and the gardens of Villa Melzi in Bellagio, with a 2-hour boat navigation to Bellagio. It runs every day, weekends included.

Book it ahead. Ferry stops include Como, Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio, Cadenabbia, Lecco and Colico, so you can also build the same day yourself with a ferry timetable. A car ferry links Cadenabbia to Bellagio and Varenna.

Is Lake Como busy in June?

Summer and holidays bring heavy traffic around the villas, with parking difficulties on weekends. The boat ticket offices can have queues too.

Reserve what takes reservations. The guided tour of the villas runs by reservation, and the cellar tour of Révolt da Stazuna is limited to a restricted number of participants.

The guided tour ‘Le bellezze del Lago di Como’ starts from €300, and the price does not include entrance fees and transport. Access to the Isola Comacina is subject to a fee. Hotel Villa Aurora in Lezzeno, a 3-star hotel, has ten villa rooms facing the lake and allows pets for €10 per night.
