Rain falls on about five days in the month, and the sun shows for four hours a day. Plan the outdoor sights, such as a villa garden or a lakeside walk, for the middle of the day. Keep indoor stops like the Como museums for a wet afternoon.

December runs a touch milder at 46°F (8°C) but wetter, with six rainy days and only a few hours of sun a day. February reaches 48°F (9°C), has five rainy days and five hours of sun, and its days are longer, with 10 hours 21 minutes of daylight on February 15. Late January sits between the two.

Where to go on Lake Como in January

Como

The city is the easiest base in winter. The funicular to Brunate leaves from Piazza Alcide De Gasperi, a stone’s throw from the lake.

Bellagio

Bellagio stands on the central promontory of the lake and has the 16th century Villa Serbelloni and the neoclassical Villa Melzi d’Eril. The Melzi gardens stretch 800 meters along the water, so a January stroll there fits a short, cool day.

Varenna

Varenna has Villa Monastero, with the botanical garden of Villa Cipressi next door, plus Vezio Castle above the village. The Lovers’ Promenade, a walkway 350 meters over the lake, is a short walk that suits a clear afternoon.

Tremezzina and Lenno

Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo has an original Italian garden and a café, the Caffetteria Antica Serra. Villa del Balbianello is in Lenno, and the lakeside market there is held on Tuesdays. Check opening hours for both before going.

Isola Comacina

The only island on the lake can be crossed on foot in about half an hour. Taxi motorboats run from Ossuccio, and Navigazione Laghi boats also call. Access is subject to a fee. The Antiquarium holds roughly 250 finds from the island.

What to do on Lake Como in January

Funicular to Brunate from Como

The funicular links Como with Brunate, 2,300 feet (700 m) up, and has an intermediate stop at Carescione. From the top you look over the city and the lake. Pick a clear morning, since a gray sky hides the view you came for.

The Faro Voltiano viewpoint tower in San Maurizio has a spiral staircase of 143 steps. Wear shoes with grip for the climb.

The Greenway del Lago di Como

This walk runs about 6 miles (10 km) from Colonno to Cadenabbia di Griante. It starts on Via Cappella in Colonno and ends on Via Regina in Griante. You can cover it by the C110 bus or by boat, so you can walk one stretch and ride the rest.

With daylight lasting just over nine hours, start in the morning. A car ferry links Cadenabbia with Bellagio and Varenna if you want to continue across the lake.

Villa del Balbianello in Lenno

The villa is managed by the FAI and was a set for Casino Royale and Star Wars II. The ticket includes a guided tour of the interiors and a self-guided visit of the garden, terraces and Loggia Durini. A guided tour at sunset costs €30.

The villa has no cafeteria, though the bookshop sells water, drinks and small snacks. Eat before you go, and confirm the winter opening hours.

A boat tour on the lake

A private cruise starts from €200 for 1 or 2 hours, with six passengers at most. The 2-hour tour passes Villa Oleandra, sails along the eastern shore past Blevio and Torno, continues to Villa Pliniana and crosses to Laglio. Water and soft drinks are served on board.

The regular Navigazione Laghi ferries reach Como, Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio, Cadenabbia, Lecco and Colico.

Is Lake Como busy in January?

The warnings about heavy traffic, parking trouble and ticket-office queues name weekends, summer and holidays. January falls outside summer, so ordinary weekdays are the easy days to visit. Weekends are the busier ones.

At ports without a ticket office you can buy the ferry ticket on board at no extra cost. At a ticket office, arrive about 20 minutes before departure. The cellar tour of the Révolt da Stazuna is limited to a small number of participants.

What to pack for Lake Como in January

January asks for layers, a real coat and shoes that cope with wet paths and stairs.

  • A warm coat and a hat, for a night low of 34°F (1°C).
  • A rain jacket or umbrella, for five rainy days in the month.
  • Shoes with grip, for the Greenway of about 6 miles (10 km), the Sentiero del Viandante above Varenna and the 143 steps of the Faro Voltiano.
  • Water and a snack, since Villa del Balbianello has only a bookshop selling drinks and small snacks.
  • A camera or phone with a full battery for the views from Brunate, 2,300 feet (700 m) up.

What to know before visiting Lake Como in January

The State Department travel advisory for Italy is Level 2, Exercise increased caution, issued September 10, 2026, because of terrorism. It recommends enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) and buying travel insurance before you travel.

Boat routes may be suspended in bad weather or strong waves, so keep a bus or train as a backup. Check the winter schedule before you go. In case of a strike, service is guaranteed from 6:00 to 9:00 a.m. and from 5:55 to 8:55 p.m. Vehicles travel only between the ferry stops marked Traghetto. The Como Open Pass costs €15 and includes a return train to Como from anywhere in Lombardy plus unlimited daily travel on local ASF buses.

Is January a good time to visit Lake Como?

Yes, for travelers who want villas, lakeside walks and boat rides at a cool, calm pace. January suits people who dress warmly. It doesn’t suit anyone counting on beach weather.

Compared with December, January has fewer rainy days (five against six) and more sun. February is a little milder and brighter, with days more than an hour longer. Waiting four weeks buys light and warmth, and the cost is less time with the winter calm.

If you want walking, the Greenway and the Sentiero del Viandante are the picks. If you want views, take the Brunate funicular or the Pigra Argegno cable car. For a day indoors, Como’s museums work, including the Pinacoteca civica, the Silk Museum and the Tempio Voltiano.

With children, a short ferry hop and a villa garden fit the short daylight better than a long hike.
