Plan the outdoor sights, the gardens and the walks, for the middle of the day. Keep museums and a covered boat deck for the wet days.

Where to go on Lake Como in February
Como
The city has its Duomo, the Broletto, the city tower, Baradello Castle and Villa Olmo. For rainy hours, the museum system includes the Pinacoteca civica, the Tempio Voltiano and the Cattedrale, and the Silk Museum covers the city’s textile tradition. A 48°F afternoon is comfortable for the lungolago walk between them.
Bellagio
Bellagio stands on the central promontory of the lake and is called “La Perla del Lago”. Villa Serbelloni dates to the 16th century, and the gardens of the neoclassical Villa Melzi d’Eril stretch along the water for 800 meters. Walking them in the February afternoon is easy with a warm layer.
Varenna
Varenna sits on the Lecco branch of the lake. Villa Monastero has the botanical garden of Villa Cipressi next to it, and Vezio Castle looks down on the village. The Passeggiata degli Innamorati, a walkway 1,150 feet (350 meters) over the lake, is a short outing between showers.
Tremezzina and Lenno
Villa Carlotta, in Tremezzo, has an original Italian garden. Villa del Balbianello, in Lenno, is managed by the FAI. The weekly market in Lenno is held on Tuesdays on the lakeside, a reason to pick that day for the area.
Isola Comacina
The island is the only one on Lake Como and can be crossed on foot in about half an hour. Taxi motorboats run from Ossuccio, and Navigazione Laghi boats also call. Access is subject to a fee. Check that boats are running before you plan the crossing, since rough water can suspend routes.
What to do on Lake Como in February
Brunate above Como
The funicular leaves from Piazza Alcide De Gasperi, a stone’s throw from the lake, and stops at Carescione on the way. It reaches Brunate at 2,300 feet (700 meters) altitude, where the view takes in the city and the lake.
It will be colder at the top than on the waterfront, so bring the warm layer.
A boat ride to Bellagio and the villas
The ferry stops include Como, Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio, Cadenabbia, Lecco and Colico. Boats avoid the car traffic and the search for parking. A guided itinerary with a 2-hour boat trip to Bellagio runs every day, weekends included, by reservation. It can include Villa del Balbianello, Villa Carlotta and the gardens of Villa Melzi.
The guided tour starts from €300, and entrance fees and transport are not included. Go to the ticket office about 20 minutes before departure. Where a landing has no ticket office, you can buy the ticket on board at no extra cost.
The Greenway from Colonno to Cadenabbia
This walk is about 6 miles (10 km) long. It starts at Via Cappella in Colonno and ends at Via Regina in Griante. You can cover it with the C110 bus line or the boat service, which lets you walk one way and ride back.
February’s short days suit the middle of the day for this walk. Wear shoes that grip, as the ground will be damp after rain.
Villa del Balbianello
The villa was built in the 18th century on a promontory that once housed a Franciscan monastery. It appeared in Casino Royale and in Star Wars II. The ticket includes a guided tour of the interiors and a self-guided visit of the garden, terraces and Loggia Durini.
There is no cafeteria inside. The bookshop sells water, drinks and small snacks, so eat before you go. Villa Carlotta has the Caffetteria Antica Serra, and you could pair the two on one day.
Villa Serbelloni park
The park in Bellagio can be visited on a 2-hour guided tour, in the morning or the afternoon, from Tuesday to Sunday. Choose the afternoon in February, when the day has had time to warm up.
Is Lake Como busy in February?
The warnings about heavy traffic and parking trouble on Lake Como speak of weekends and summer. The queues at the ferry ticket offices are tied to summer and holidays. February sits outside those periods, so weekdays are the easiest days to move around.
Even so, the guided tours go by reservation, and the cellar tour of Révolt da Stazuna is limited to a restricted number of participants. Book anything with a set guide or a set time ahead.
Some costs help you plan. The Como Open Pass costs €15 and includes a return train from anywhere in Lombardy to Como, plus unlimited daily travel on local ASF buses. A private cruise starts from €200 for up to 6 passengers, for 1 or 2 hours. A Villa Carlotta membership card costs 75 euros and gives free entry.
What to pack for Lake Como in February
February asks for layers and rain protection, since the afternoon is cool and the nights are close to freezing.
- A warm coat and a sweater for nights near 35°F (2°C) and for the boat deck.
- A rain jacket or umbrella for the five rainy days of the month.
- Walking shoes with grip for the Greenway, the Sentiero del Viandante and the Varenna walkway.
- A hat and gloves for Brunate, which stands at 2,300 feet (700 meters).
- A small bag for water and snacks, since Villa del Balbianello has no cafeteria.
What to know before visiting Lake Como in February
The State Department’s advisory for Italy is Level 2, Exercise increased caution, issued September 10, 2026, due to terrorism. It recommends enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) and buying travel insurance before you travel.
Boat routes may be suspended in bad weather or strong wave motion. Vehicles travel only between the ferry stops marked “Traghetto”. You can pay on board contactless with NaviTap. Check the winter timetable and each villa’s opening dates before you go.
Is February a good time to visit Lake Como?
Yes, for travelers who want villas, gardens, boat rides and walks in cool, fairly bright weather. February suits those who are happy with a 48°F (9°C) afternoon and a coat on the deck.
January is colder and has the shortest days of the three months. Shifting four weeks later buys warmth and costs one dry day.
