Where to go in the Dolomites in October

Tre Cime di Lavaredo

The Tre Cime lie between the Province of Belluno and South Tyrol, inside the Tre Cime Nature Park. The area stretches between Auronzo di Cadore, Misurina and Dobbiaco. The loop walk is easy to moderate.

Seceda

The Seceda meadows lie beneath 8,264-foot (2,519 m) Mt. Seceda, in the Odle Group. Numerous paths lead from here to mountain huts such as the Curona Hut.

Alpe di Siusi

Alpe di Siusi, also called Seiser Alm, adds churches, chapels, castles and viewpoints to the walking. That gives a wet October day something to do indoors.

Val Gardena

Val Gardena is in Alto Adige (South Tyrol) and has three villages: Ortisei, Selva di Val Gardena and S. Cristina. Ortisei has a pedestrian zone with shopping, food and Ladin tradition, a good place to dry off. Selva is the highest village, at the foot of the Sella massif. The valley also has 19 miles (30 km) of hiking trails.

Cortina d’Ampezzo

Cortina d’Ampezzo is called the Queen of the Dolomites. October brings a 53°F (12°C) afternoon and seven rainy days.

What to do in the Dolomites in October

The Tre Cime loop

The loop is about 6 miles (9.5 to 10 km) long and takes 3 to 4 hours. It runs from Rifugio Auronzo to Rifugio Lavaredo, then Forcella Lavaredo and Rifugio Locatelli, and returns on a scenic loop.

Start in the morning, keep a rain shell and a warm layer in the pack, and plan the stops at the huts along the route.

LUMEN, the mountain photography museum at Plan de Corones

LUMEN sits at 7,431 feet (2,265 m), in a former upper station of the Plan de Corones cable car. It makes a good indoor stop when the weather turns.

Check the opening hours and the lift schedule before you go. The lifts of the UNESCO Dolomites run from May to November, so check LUMEN’s hours before a late-season visit.

Seceda and its meadows

The meadows border the Rasciesa High Alp and the Mastlè Alpine Pasture. In summer Seceda is a hiking area with many paths to huts. In winter it becomes a ski area.

October falls between the two. Take the cooler days for a walk toward the Curona Hut, and bring warm layers for the huts.

Castles, chapels and churches around Alpe di Siusi

Seiser Alm has castles, ruins, museums and viewpoints. Castle Prösels is in Völs am Schlern, the Salegg ruins are in Seis am Schlern, and the Church steeple is in Kastelruth. The Visitor Center of the Schlern-Rosengarten Nature Park is in Seis am Schlern.

These stops fit a rainy afternoon. Group them by village to keep the driving short, and check opening times locally.

Cadini del Brenton in the Dolomiti Bellunesi park

The Cadini del Brenton are among the most iconic sights of the Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park.

Are the Dolomites busy in October?

The summer lifts run from May to November. In winter, Val Gardena joins Dolomiti Superski. October falls between the summer and winter seasons.

Lodging comes in many forms. Seiser Alm has hotels, holiday apartments, guesthouses, private rooms, farm holidays and mountain huts. You can stay on the plateau itself or in Kastelruth, Seis am Schlern, Völs am Schlern or Tiers am Rosengarten. The 3 Zinnen region has five holiday villages: Prags/Braies, Niederdorf/Villabassa, Toblach/Dobbiaco, Innichen/San Candido and Sexten/Sesto. Book ahead if you want a specific hut or village, and confirm with each place that it is open.

South Tyrol charges a tourist tax on top of the room rate, paid on site by guests aged 14 and over. In Kastelruth, Seis am Schlern, Seiser Alm and Völs am Schlern it is €3.50 per person per night in 4-star, 4-star-S and 5-star places. In Tiers am Rosengarten it is €3.90, €3.40 or €2.90 by the same tiers.
