Where to go in the Dolomites in March
Val Gardena
Val Gardena is in Alto Adige (South Tyrol) and has three villages: Ortisei, Selva di Val Gardena and S. Cristina. In winter it is part of Dolomiti Superski, reached directly from the three villages by modern lifts. Ortisei has a pedestrian zone with shops and food, which helps on days when the weather turns.
Seceda
The Seceda Meadows lie beneath Mt. Seceda, which rises to 8,264 feet (2,519 m) in the Odle Group. In winter Seceda is a skiing area. The summer hiking paths to huts such as the Curona Hut belong to a later season.
Cortina d’Ampezzo
Cortina d’Ampezzo is called the Queen of the Dolomites. It makes a base for the colder, higher side of the range, with 27°F (-3°C) nights in March. Dress for the morning cold, then plan outdoor time after lunch.
Seiser Alm
The Seiser Alm region has churches, chapels, castles, ruins, museums and viewpoints. You can stay on the plateau itself or in Kastelruth, Seis am Schlern, Völs am Schlern or Tiers am Rosengarten.
Tre Cime di Lavaredo
The Tre Cime di Lavaredo lie between the Province of Belluno and South Tyrol, in the Tre Cime Nature Park. The area stretches between Auronzo di Cadore, Misurina and Dobbiaco. Check conditions on the loop trail before you set out, since March weather in the high country varies.
What to do in the Dolomites in March
Skiing in Val Gardena in March
Val Gardena offers 310 miles (500 km) of slopes, 71 miles (115 km) of cross-country ski trails and 19 miles (30 km) of hiking trails. The lifts leave directly from Ortisei, Selva di Val Gardena and S. Cristina.
Selva di Val Gardena is the highest of the three villages, at the foot of the Sella massif. S. Cristina is the sunny one, at the foot of Sassolungo. Pick your village by whether you want the higher base or the sunnier one.
LUMEN Museum of Mountain Photography at Plan de Corones
LUMEN sits at 7,431 feet (2,265 m) in a former upper station of the Plan de Corones cable car. It’s now a museum of 1,800 square meters. That makes it an indoor stop.
Opening hours aren’t given, so confirm them before you go. The altitude means colder air than in the valley, so bring a warm layer.
Castles and churches around Seiser Alm
Castle Prösels is in Völs am Schlern. The Salegg ruins and the Holy Cross parish church are in Seis am Schlern. Kastelruth has its church steeple.
The Visitor Center of the Schlern-Rosengarten Nature Park is in Seis am Schlern.
Summer sights to save for a later trip
The Dolomiti SuperSummer lifts run from May to November, so they’re not an option in March. The free guided tours of the Cadini del Brenton run from July 5 to September 13, 2026.
The Tre Cime loop covers about 6 miles (9.5 to 10 km) in 3 to 4 hours, easy to moderate. It runs from Rifugio Auronzo through Rifugio Lavaredo, Forcella Lavaredo and Rifugio Locatelli, with a scenic return loop. It’s a good plan for a summer visit.
Is the Dolomites busy in March?
Seiser Alm has hotels, holiday apartments, guesthouses, private rooms, farm holidays and mountain huts. The 3 Zinnen region has five holiday villages: Prags/Braies, Niederdorf/Villabassa, Toblach/Dobbiaco, Innichen/San Candido and Sexten/Sesto. In the Dolomiti Bellunesi park there are apartments, B&Bs, hotels, huts, hostels and guesthouses.
If you want a room in a ski village such as Ortisei, Selva di Val Gardena or S. Cristina, book as early as you can.
South Tyrol charges a tourist tax on top of the room rate. Guests aged 14 and over pay it on site.
What to pack for the Dolomites in March
March asks for warm layers in the mountains and a lighter set for the valley.
- A warm jacket, hat and gloves, since Cortina falls to 27°F (-3°C) at night
- A waterproof shell, for about five rainy days in the month
- A light layer for Bolzano, where afternoons reach 60°F (16°C)
- Ski gear or a rental plan for Val Gardena, where the slopes total 310 miles (500 km)
What to know before visiting the Dolomites in March
Summer services are off the March calendar. Check opening times for LUMEN and the Seiser Alm sights before you travel.
Every stay in South Tyrol carries a tourist tax, paid on site by guests aged 14 and over.
