April in the Dolomites is a good month for villages, castles, museums and short walks, with mild afternoons in the valleys and cold nights higher up. It is a poorer fit for travelers who want the high summer trails, since the summer lifts open from May.
The stake of the month is the calendar. Dolomiti SuperSummer lifts run from May to November, and the free guided tours of the Cadini del Brenton ran from July 5 to September 13 in 2026, so April sits just before both.

April is cool in the mountains and mild in the valley. Cortina d’Ampezzo reaches 53°F (12°C) in the afternoon and drops to 33°F (1°C) at night, right at freezing. Bolzano is warmer, with afternoons of 67°F (19°C) and nights of 46°F (8°C).
Cortina has seven rainy days in April and Bolzano between six and seven. That is roughly one day in four, so plan outdoor sights for the morning and keep a village, a museum or a castle in reserve for a wet afternoon. Bolzano gets 5 hours of sun a day in April. A waterproof layer and a warm one cover most days.
March is colder. Cortina’s March afternoons reach 46°F (8°C) and its nights fall to 27°F (-3°C), with five rainy days. May is clearly warmer, with 62°F (17°C) afternoons and 41°F (5°C) nights in Cortina, but it brings 11 rainy days there. April sits between the two, a little wetter than March and much drier than May.
Where to go in the Dolomites in April
Alpe di Siusi and the Seiser Alm villages
The Seiser Alm region has hotels, holiday apartments, guesthouses, private rooms, farm holidays and mountain huts. You can stay on the Seiser Alm itself or down in Kastelruth, Seis am Schlern, Völs am Schlern or Tiers am Rosengarten. In April the villages make the easier base, with churches, chapels, castles, ruins and viewpoints close at hand.
Val Gardena
Val Gardena lies in Alto Adige (South Tyrol) and has three villages: Ortisei, Selva di Val Gardena and S. Cristina. Selva sits at the foot of the Sella massif, and S. Cristina lies at the foot of Sassolungo with a view of the Dolomites. Ortisei has a pedestrian zone with shops, food and Ladin tradition, which suits a cool or wet April day.
Cortina d’Ampezzo
Cortina d’Ampezzo is called the Queen of the Dolomites. April brings a 53°F (12°C) afternoon and a night at the edge of frost, so it is a town for strolling in a jacket. Rifugio Averau, at Forcella Nuvolau above Cortina, is one of the huts in the area. Check that a hut is open before you plan a walk up to it.
Tre Cime di Lavaredo
The Tre Cime di Lavaredo lie between the Province of Belluno and South Tyrol, within the Tre Cime Nature Park. The area stretches between Auronzo di Cadore, Misurina and Dobbiaco. In April, check trail and hut conditions before you drive up, because this is early in the season for high ground.
Pragser Wildsee
The Pragser Wildsee is a lake in Prags/Braies, in the Dolomites Region 3 Zinnen. The region has five holiday villages: Prags/Braies, Niederdorf/Villabassa, Toblach/Dobbiaco, Innichen/San Candido and Sexten/Sesto. Any of them works as a base for a lakeside visit.
What to do in the Dolomites in April
LUMEN Museum of Mountain Photography at Plan de Corones
LUMEN fills a former upper station of the Plan de Corones cable car, converted into a museum of 1,800 square meters. It stands at 7,430 feet (2,265 m).
The summer lifts open from May, so check how you will reach the museum before you set out. A museum is also a fair plan for one of the seven rainy days.
Castles, ruins and churches around the Seiser Alm
The Seiser Alm area lists churches, chapels, castles, ruins, museums and viewpoints. Castle Prösels is in Völs am Schlern, the Salegg ruins and the Parish Church Holy Cross are in Seis am Schlern, and the church steeple is in Kastelruth. Together they make a day of short stops by car or on foot.
The Visitor Center of the Nature Park Schlern-Rosengarten is in Seis am Schlern. Plan the outdoor stops for the morning and keep the afternoon for indoor ones.
The Tre Cime loop hike
The Tre Cime loop is about 6 miles (9.5 to 10 km) long and takes 3 to 4 hours, rated easy to moderate. It runs from Rifugio Auronzo to Rifugio Lavaredo, Forcella Lavaredo and Rifugio Locatelli, then returns by a scenic loop.
April nights near freezing mean cold, possibly slippery ground early in the day. Check conditions and hut hours before you commit, and start in the morning so a late shower doesn’t catch you on the return leg.
Wood carving in Ortisei and Val Gardena
Val Gardena is the cradle of wood carving art, and Ortisei’s pedestrian zone mixes shopping, food and Ladin tradition. It is an easy half day on foot, good when the mountains are cold or wet.
In summer it becomes a hiking area with paths to huts such as the Curona Hut. In April it is better as a view than as a destination.
Is the Dolomites busy in April?
The summer lifts of Dolomiti SuperSummer run from May to November, so April sits just before the summer season. Winter belongs to the ski areas, such as Dolomiti Superski in Val Gardena.
Accommodation is varied: hotels, apartments, guesthouses, private rooms, farm stays and huts in the Seiser Alm area, and apartments, B&Bs, hotels, huts and hostels around the Dolomiti Bellunesi park.
Every accommodation in South Tyrol adds a tourist tax to the room rate, paid on site by guests aged 14 and over. In Kastelruth, Seis am Schlern, Seiser Alm and Völs am Schlern it runs from €2.50 to €3.50 per person per night, depending on the type of lodging. In Tiers am Rosengarten it runs from €2.90 to €3.90.
What to pack for the Dolomites in April
April asks for layers: mild afternoons in the valleys, frost at night higher up, and rain about one day in four.
- A warm layer and a hat for evenings in Cortina d’Ampezzo, where the night low is 33°F (1°C)
- A waterproof jacket, since Cortina has seven rainy days in April
- A light layer for Bolzano, where afternoons reach 67°F (19°C)
- Sturdy shoes with grip for the Tre Cime loop, 3 to 4 hours on the trail
- Extra warm clothing for LUMEN, at 7,430 feet (2,265 m)
- Some cash or a card for the tourist tax, paid on site
What to know before visiting the Dolomites in April
Lifts for summer hiking open from May, so in April check what is running before you plan a high route. The free guided tours of the Cadini del Brenton ran from July 5 to September 13 in 2026, and they met at the Infopoint Cadini in Valle del Mis.
Hut and museum hours are not given for April, so confirm them before a long drive.
Is April a good time to visit the Dolomites?
Yes, for travelers who want villages, castles, museums and short walks in cool, changeable weather. It is not the month for high summer trails, because the summer lifts open in May.
Compared with March, April brings warmer Cortina afternoons (53°F against 46°F), and nights rise from 27°F (-3°C) to 33°F (1°C). It adds two rainy days, seven against five. Compared with May, April is cooler and drier, since Cortina has 11 rainy days in May. Waiting until May gets you lifts and warmer afternoons, at the price of more rain.
If you want the high summer routes, choose May or later. If you want a calm trip built around culture, April works well, with Val Gardena wood carving, Castle Prösels and the Parish Church Holy Cross in Seis.
