Cinque Terre in October: Mild Afternoons, Walking Park Excursions and Quiet Weekdays

Yes, October suits the Cinque Terre if you came to walk, eat and see the villages without the summer crush. Afternoons stay mild, and weekdays fall in the park’s low attendance band.

The month has two catches. Rain shows up on about nine days, and the Walking Park’s guided excursions run only until October 31. The Via dell’Amore also needs a reservation.

October is mild and comfortable for walking. The afternoon high is 69°F (21°C) and the night low is 54°F (12°C). That’s enough warmth for a day on the paths in a light layer, and cool enough that climbing the steps between villages won’t wear you out.

Rain falls on nine days of the month, so expect a wet day or two in any week. Keep museums and indoor stops for the days that turn gray. The paths and alleys can be slick after rain, so sturdy shoes matter.

September runs warmer, with a high near 78°F (25°C) and six rainy days. In November the high drops to 60°F (16°C), rain returns on nine days, and daylight shrinks to under ten hours in mid-month. October sits between the two: noticeably cooler than September, with more daylight than November.

Where to go in Cinque Terre in October

Riomaggiore

It’s also where the Via dell’Amore starts toward Manarola. The walk needs a reservation, so book it before you go.

Manarola

Manarola is linked to Riomaggiore by the Via dell’Amore, which makes the two villages an easy pair for one day. In October, with weekdays in the low attendance band, a midweek visit is the calmer choice.

Corniglia

Corniglia is the village with the fewest tourists. In a month that already runs quiet, it’s a good place to slow down.

Vernazza

Vernazza is crowded by day, but it gains a unique atmosphere in the evening when the day-trippers leave. In October, plan to stay into the evening. The Castello dei Doria is a few steps away, and the village is on the Blue Trail between Monterosso and Corniglia.

Monterosso al Mare

Monterosso al Mare has the largest accommodation offer of the five villages, which makes it a practical base in a month with fewer visitors. It’s also the end of the Blue Trail section from Vernazza.

What to do in Cinque Terre in October

Walking Park excursions

The Cinque Terre Walking Park offers over 160 guided excursions between May 1 and October 31 in 2026. October is the last month of the program, so late-season walkers can still join a guided hike. Groups are limited to 15 people.

The Park also runs nature and poetry trails in the Eugenio Montale and Cinque Terre Literary Park program. Check the published schedule before you choose a day, and keep a backup for the rainy ones.

Via dell’Amore and the Blue Trail

The Cinque Terre Trekking Card costs €10 for one day for an adult. It covers the Via dell’Amore from Riomaggiore to Manarola, with booking required. It also covers the Blue Trail sections from Corniglia to Vernazza and from Vernazza to Monterosso.

The card also includes the ATC bus inside the villages and free entry to Podere Case Lovara, a FAI property on the Levanto to Monterosso trail. No reservation is needed to enter the Park area itself. Start walking in the morning, since daylight lasts about eleven hours in mid-October.

CAMeC and the La Spezia museums on a rainy day

With nine rainy days in October, a museum day in La Spezia is a sound backup. The Cinque Terre Card and the Trekking Card both give free admission to CAMeC, the Centre for Modern and Contemporary Art.

They also give reduced admission to the Civic Museums of La Spezia. These include the Amedeo Lia Museum and the San Giorgio Castle Archaeological Museum. Buy the card online or at the Welcome Centers in the railway stations of the five villages.

Trains and boats between the villages

The Park names the train as the best means of transport to reach the Cinque Terre. The Cinque Terre Treno MS Card costs €14.80 for one day for an adult and €26.50 for two days. It allows unlimited second-class travel on regional trains between Levanto and La Spezia.

Every village except Corniglia is served by boats. The Park also lists swimming, kayak and underwater itineraries. Check the schedule for October, since sea conditions can change the plan.

Events in October

The Walking Park’s guided excursions end on October 31.

Is Cinque Terre busy in October?

October is one of the quieter months. Weekdays in May and October fall in the green band, the Park’s low attendance level. September sits in the yellow, medium band. The red, high band is for national holidays and for summer weekends.

The Cinque Terre have no large hotels, only b&b, affittacamere and apartments in historic buildings, almost always run by local families. Book ahead for weekends, and earlier still if you want a specific village.

What to pack for Cinque Terre in October

October asks for layers and for shoes that grip. The days are mild, the nights are cool, and the paths between the villages are steep.

  • Walking shoes with good grip, for the paths and alleys and for wet steps.
  • A light rain jacket, since it rains on nine days of the month.
  • A warm layer for the evening, when the low is 54°F (12°C).
  • A swimsuit if you plan to use the beaches or join a swimming or kayak itinerary.
  • A small daypack for water and a rain layer on the trails.
  • A card or printout for any Via dell’Amore booking.

What to know before visiting Cinque Terre in October

Book the Via dell’Amore in advance, since it’s visited on reservation. Guided excursions end on October 31, and guided groups are capped at 15 people. Rooms are small family-run places, so reserve early for weekends.

The Cinque Terre Card and the Treno MS Card both include bus use inside the villages. That helps with the steep links between villages and their hamlets. The Treno MS Card adds second-class regional trains between Levanto and La Spezia.

Is October a good time to visit Cinque Terre?

Yes, October is a good month for walkers and for anyone who prefers calmer villages. It fits travelers who want trails, local food and a fair chance of mild weather.

October runs cooler and wetter than September: afternoons reach 69°F (21°C) against 78°F (25°C), and rain falls on about nine days against about six. You gain quieter weekdays, since September sits in the medium band. Compared with November, October has warmer afternoons at 69°F (21°C) against 60°F (16°C), and longer days. You lose the warmth of September but keep the guided excursions.

If you want swimming, September is the warmer month. If you want fewer crowds, plan weekdays in October. If you want guided hikes, go before October 31, since the Walking Park season ends then.
