Cinque Terre in June: Warm Afternoons, Open Beaches and Walking Park Hikes

Yes, June suits travelers who want to hike and swim in the same trip: afternoons reach 79°F (26°C), the beaches are open for swimming and diving, and the Park runs guided excursions through the month.

The stake is the crowd. In June, July and August a train reaches the first coastal village every 20 minutes and each one empties into a tunnel, and the Cinque Terre have no large hotels, so rooms in family-run places go early.

Where to go in Cinque Terre in June

Monterosso al Mare

Monterosso has the largest accommodation offer of the five villages, so it is the easiest base to book for a June stay. It also has beaches where visitors can swim and dive, and the Blue Trail starts here toward Vernazza and Corniglia.

Vernazza

Vernazza is crowded by day, but in the evening, when the day-trippers leave, it gains a unique atmosphere. Staying a night here in June means seeing the village after the trains have emptied.

Corniglia

Corniglia is the quietest village, with the fewest tourists. It is the one village without a boat service, so it is reached by train or on foot along the trail from Vernazza.

Riomaggiore

Riomaggiore is the starting point of the Via dell’Amore, the walk to Manarola.

Levanto

Levanto belongs to the Park along with parts of La Spezia, and a trail runs from Levanto to Monterosso past Podere Case Lovara, a FAI property.

What to do in Cinque Terre in June

Walking Park guided hikes

The Cinque Terre Walking Park offers over 160 guided excursions from May 1 to October 31, so June falls in the middle of the season. Groups for guided tours are limited to 15 people, so sign up early rather than on the day.

The Park also runs nature and poetry trails in the Eugenio Montale and Cinque Terre Literary Park programme. Both the Cinque Terre Card and the Trekking Card include guided tours and hikes in the Walking Park programme.

The Blue Trail and the Via dell’Amore

The Trekking Card costs €10 for one day for an adult. It covers the Via dell’Amore and the Blue Trail sections Corniglia to Vernazza and Vernazza to Monterosso. The Via dell’Amore visit from Riomaggiore to Manarola needs a booking.

No reservation is needed to enter the Park area itself. With 15 hours of daylight in June, one trail section in the morning and a village in the evening fits easily.

Trains and boats between the villages

The train is the best way to reach the Cinque Terre. The Treno MS Card allows unlimited second-class travel on regional trains between Levanto and La Spezia, at €14.80 for a day and €26.50 for two days.

Boats serve every village except Corniglia, which gives a second way to see the coast from the water. Cards can be bought online or at the Welcome Centers in the railway stations of the five villages.

Is Cinque Terre busy in June?

June sits in attendance band B, yellow, medium. Weekdays of May are band A, green, for low attendance, while weekends of July and August are band C, red, for high attendance. National holidays such as Easter, May 1 and Ferragosto are also red. June is therefore busy but not at the top of the scale.

Trains run every 20 minutes in the peak months of June through August, and the train can be overcrowded in summer, with standing room only. The Cinque Terre have no large hotels, only b&bs, affittacamere and apartments in historic buildings, almost always run by local families. Book early. Monterosso al Mare offers the most rooms.

What to pack for Cinque Terre in June

June asks for light clothes by day, one layer for the evening and shoes for stone paths and alleys.

  • Walking shoes with good grip for the trails and the village alleys
  • A swimsuit for the beaches
  • A light rain jacket, since five days of the month are rainy
  • A thin layer for evenings, when lows reach 62°F (17°C)
  • Your Via dell’Amore booking confirmation, saved on your phone or printed
