Where to go in Cinque Terre in February

Riomaggiore and Manarola

The two villages sit at the eastern end of the line and are joined by the Via dell’Amore. The Park’s headquarters is at Manarola station. Riomaggiore has companies offering boat and kayak rentals and boat tours, worth asking about on a calm day.

Corniglia

Corniglia is the only one of the five not built on the water. It perches 328 feet (100 m) above the sea and is reached by 377 to 382 steps or by shuttle bus. It is the quietest and least visited village, and it has a few small hotels with sea views.

Vernazza

Vernazza is crowded by day in high season, and in the evening, when the day-trippers leave, it gains a calmer atmosphere. It has few hotels and mostly B&Bs or apartments. Staying the night lets you see the village at that hour.

Monterosso al Mare

Monterosso has the largest accommodation offer of the five villages and the largest selection of hotels. A promenade lined with aperitivo bars and seafood restaurants runs along the front.

La Spezia

La Spezia has a Trenitalia station with lifts and luggage storage, which is handy when you arrive with suitcases. It is also the place to go on a rainy day: the Trekking Card gives free entry to the CAMeC modern art center and reduced entry to the Civic Museums.

What to do in Cinque Terre in February

Via dell’Amore from Riomaggiore to Manarola

The path is 0.6 mile (1 km) long and takes 30 minutes one way, from Riomaggiore to Manarola. It was cut into the rock between 1926 and 1928. The Trekking Card includes the visit, with booking required.

The walk is short enough to fit between showers. Book a slot first, and if you already hold a Cinque Terre Card, an on-site top-up for the entrance costs 10 euros, or 8 euros for tourist-card and CETS guests.

The Blue Trail from Monterosso to Corniglia

The Blue Trail (the Sentiero Verde Azzurro, or SVA) links Monterosso, Vernazza and Corniglia, and it needs a Cinque Terre Card. The Trekking Card costs 10 euros for one day, or 15 euros on high-attendance days. Hiking trails link the villages and stay open all year.

Park boundaries are not fenced, and the territory can be visited at any time of year. Cinque Terre’s one-way system on the Monterosso to Vernazza section applies on busy dates, so check which kind of day it is before you set out. With under 10.5 hours of daylight, start the Blue Trail in the morning.

Corniglia and its staircase

The Corniglia tour starts from the Lardarina, a staircase of 377 steps. The village is the highest of the five. If you would rather skip the stairs, a shuttle bus also reaches it, and buses are free for Cinque Terre Card holders.

A stop here fits between two trail sections. Corniglia is the quietest village, so it is a calm place for lunch.

Museums in La Spezia on a rainy day

With the Trekking Card, entry to CAMeC, the Centre for Modern and Contemporary Art, is free. The Civic Museums offer reduced admission: the Amedeo Lia Museum, the San Giorgio Castle Archaeological Museum, the Museum of the Seal, the Palazzina delle Arti, the Ethnographic Museum and the Diocesan Museum.

Check opening hours before going.

Is Cinque Terre busy in February?

The park’s attendance bands put March in the low band (green), and the red high band covers national holidays such as Easter, May 1 and Ferragosto, plus July and August weekends. February is not named in the bands. In the peak months of June through August, trains arrive every 20 minutes at the first village, and each unloads a crowd.

The Cinque Terre has no large hotels, only B&Bs, affittacamere and apartments in historic buildings, almost always run by local families. Monterosso has the most beds. Levanto, one train stop from Monterosso, is the most popular alternative outside the park.

What to pack for Cinque Terre in February

February asks for layers and shoes that handle wet steps. The nights are cold, the afternoons mild, and the villages involve a lot of stairs and trails.

  • A waterproof jacket, since 7 days of the month bring rain.
  • A warm layer for the evening, with lows at 39°F (4°C).
  • Shoes with good grip for trails and for the steps up to Corniglia.
  • A phone or printout of your Via dell’Amore booking, which is required.
  • Coins for the station toilets, which cost 1 euro for anyone without a Cinque Terre Card.

What to know before visiting Cinque Terre in February

The U.S. State Department rates Italy Level 2, Exercise increased caution, issued September 10, 2026, due to terrorism. It recommends enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) and highly recommends buying travel insurance before traveling.

The Walking Park’s guided excursions run from May 1 to October 31, so in February you walk on your own. Buses connect each village to its hamlets and do not link the villages with one another, so regional trains are the way to travel between the five. The Cinque Terre Card is not valid on urban buses in La Spezia or Portovenere. Boats serve every village except Corniglia.

Is February a good time to visit Cinque Terre?

Yes, February is a good month for walkers, museum-goers and anyone who prefers space to summer buzz. The trails are open, afternoons reach 54°F (12°C), and the villages are away from the red-band crowds.

January is almost the same, with afternoons at 52°F (11°C). March is warmer at 59°F (15°C) and sits in the low-attendance band, so shifting four weeks buys warmth and daylight and costs little in crowds.

If you want guided hikes or snorkeling in the Park’s programs, they run from May to October, so come then. If you want fewer people, February or March are the calm choices.
