Hot and mostly dry. In La Spezia the August afternoon reaches 85°F (29°C) and the night stays at 66°F (19°C). Days are long, with about 14 hours of daylight in mid-August, so there is time for a walk in the morning and a swim later.

Rain falls on three days in the month, with just over an inch (34 mm) in total. A shower is possible but rare, so a light layer in the daypack is enough. Plan the paths for the morning, when the heat is lower, and keep the afternoon for the water or a village in the shade.

July is almost the same, at 84°F (29°C) in the afternoon, with two rainy days. September is cooler at 78°F (25°C) but wetter, with six rainy days and almost 4 inches (98 mm) of rain.

Where to go in Cinque Terre in August

Riomaggiore and Manarola

Manarola is linked to Riomaggiore by the Via dell’Amore. The walk is included in the Cinque Terre Card and the Trekking Card, and it has to be booked. In August, with heavy weekend crowds, reserve a slot early.

Vernazza

Vernazza is crowded by day. In the evening, when the day-trippers leave, it gains a unique atmosphere. Stay for dinner if you can. The Castello dei Doria is a few steps away.

Monterosso al Mare

Monterosso al Mare has the largest accommodation offer of the five villages, which makes it the easiest base in a busy month.

Corniglia

Corniglia is the quietest village, with the fewest tourists. Come here when the other villages feel full.

Levanto and Podere Case Lovara

Start early, since August afternoons are hot.

What to do in Cinque Terre in August

Hiking the Blue Trail between the villages

The Blue Trail (SVA) links Monterosso, Vernazza and Corniglia, and the Cinque Terre Card includes it. The Trekking Card for one adult day costs €10 and also covers the Corniglia to Vernazza and Vernazza to Monterosso sections.

With afternoons at 85°F (29°C), walk in the morning and finish before the heat peaks. The park’s Walking Park programme also offers guided hikes, with groups limited to 15 people.

The Via dell’Amore from Riomaggiore to Manarola

The Via dell’Amore visit goes from Riomaggiore to Manarola and is included in both cards. It requires a booking. August weekends are in the red band, so book a slot before you travel.

Swimming, kayaking and diving

Visitors can swim and dive at the beaches. The park also offers swimming itineraries, kayak itineraries and underwater itineraries, and it authorizes local diving centers for sea watching courses.

Rain is rare in August, with three rainy days in the month. That leaves most days open for the water, so keep the hot afternoons for it.

Moving between villages by train and boat

The train is the best way to reach the Cinque Terre. The Cinque Terre Treno MS Card allows unlimited second-class travel on regional trains between Levanto and La Spezia. It costs €14.80 for one adult day and €26.50 for two days.

Except for Corniglia, each village is also served by boats. A boat leg is a way around a crowded platform in summer.

Is Cinque Terre busy in August?

The park’s calendar puts weekdays of July and August in the yellow, medium band and weekends of July and August in the red, high band. National holidays such as Ferragosto are red as well. In June through August, trains arrive every 20 minutes at the first coastal village, and each one brings a crowd into a tunnel.

Midweek is the easier choice. For rooms, remember there are no large hotels in the Cinque Terre, only b&bs, affittacamere and apartments in historic buildings, almost always run by local families.

What to pack for Cinque Terre in August

August asks for light clothes, good shoes and something for the water. The afternoons are hot and the nights stay mild.

  • Walking shoes with grip, for the paths and the Blue Trail between villages
  • A swimsuit, since swimming and diving are open at the beaches
  • Light clothes for 85°F (29°C) afternoons, plus one thin layer for the 66°F (19°C) nights
  • A light rain jacket, for the three rainy days of the month
  • A daypack for the Trekking Card hikes, with room for water and a towel

What to know before visiting Cinque Terre in August

No reservation is required to enter the Park Area, but the Via dell’Amore is on booking. The Cinque Terre Card can be bought online or at the Welcome Centers in the railway stations of the five villages. It includes local buses in the villages, which provide the vertical connections between the villages and their hamlets.

The Treno MS Card covers regional trains between Levanto and La Spezia, plus the services of the Trekking Card.

Is August a good time to visit Cinque Terre?

Yes, for hikers and swimmers who want warm days and are fine with crowds, especially on weekdays.

July is nearly the same in temperature and rain. September drops to 78°F (25°C) and brings six rainy days, but it sits in the yellow band for the whole month. Shifting four weeks later gives fewer people and cooler paths, and costs some of the dry weather.

If you want swimming, August works well, with beaches open for swimming and diving and only three rainy days. If you want fewer crowds, choose a weekday, stay in Corniglia or stay for the evening in Vernazza, after the day-trippers leave. If you want to hike, go early and use the Blue Trail on a weekday morning.

The park’s calendar does not split August into halves, apart from the red band for Ferragosto. Avoid that day if you can and pick any weekday outside it.
