Best Time to Visit Bologna: Weather by Month, Summer Festival Season and Christmas Markets

Midsummer and midwinter ask more of you. July afternoons climb to 88°F (31°C), and January afternoons stay at 45°F (7°C).

When is the best time to visit Bologna?

May and June suit most travelers. Afternoons run from 75°F (24°C) to 83°F (28°C), the nights stay mild, and the city is made for long days on foot. Bologna Estate opens on May 15, so there is usually something on in the evening.

April is a fair choice for walking, with afternoons near 66°F (19°C). It brings about eight rainy days, so pack a light rain jacket.

July is hot at 88°F (31°C), but it is the driest of the months from January to July, with three rainy days. Plan sightseeing for the morning and keep the afternoon for a long lunch. The Porretta Soul Festival runs July 23 to 26.

Late November to early January works for a different trip. Markets and Christmas events fill the calendar then.

  • If you want sightseeing or walking: May and June
  • If you want summer evenings and festivals: late May to July
  • If you want Christmas markets: November 6 to January 6
  • If you want a quieter base: look beyond the historic centre, which can be busy in the evening

Bologna weather by month

The year from January to July climbs from winter cold to summer heat.

March is the turning point, with afternoons near 59°F (15°C). April adds another seven degrees or so, to 66°F (19°C), and brings the most rainy days of the seven months, about eight. By June the lows are 62°F (17°C), warm enough for evenings outdoors.

January is hardest for anyone who wants long days outdoors, with lows right at freezing, 31°F (-1°C). July is hardest for visitors who don’t like heat.

When is Bologna cheapest and least crowded?

The calendar sets the pace. Events cluster from May 15 to September 27 with Bologna Estate, and again from November 6 to January 6 with the Santa Lucia market and Natale a Porta Galliera. Certosa di Bologna also runs from May 22 to November 8, with more than 100 appointments.

On the first Sunday of every month, entry to permanent collections is free.

The historic centre has most of the sights, restaurants and shops, but it may not be the quietest place to sleep, especially in the evening. The university quarter is quite noisy at night. The Saragozza and Santo Stefano districts lean toward the higher end for hotels and boutique hotels.
