Where is Bergamo and what is it like?
Bergamo is a city with a main airport, Milano Bergamo, just 3 miles (5 km) away. Milan is the big city nearby, about 50 minutes by train. The station stands on piazzale Guglielmo Marconi, right in the center.
Outside the old walls, districts such as Borgo Santa Caterina and Redona hold the apartments and holiday homes.
The Venetian Walls give the upper town its outline. They run 4 miles (6 km) and have been a UNESCO site since 2017.
What is there to do in Bergamo?
Piazza Vecchia and the Campanone
Piazza Vecchia is in the heart of Bergamo Alta, and the Campanone (Torre Civica) stands in the square.
A guided tour of Città Alta with Elisabetta costs from €140. That price makes sense for a small group sharing the cost, and a solo traveler can simply walk the square and the streets around it.
The Venetian Walls, the Rocca and the Greenway
The Venetian Walls are 4 miles (6 km) long and a UNESCO site since 2017. The Rocca di Bergamo stands on the Sant’Eufemia hill, so allow time for the climb.
The Greenway crosses the Colli park and links via Baioni to Mozzo. Bike rental at Cicli Pesenti costs from €25, and road bike rental at Morgale costs from €65.
The walls and the Greenway suit active travelers. A road bike is the choice for anyone who wants longer rides, and a regular rental fits a gentle loop.
Duomo, Baptistery, museums and the Colleoni chapel
The Duomo is in Città Alta and is dedicated to Sant’Alessandro. The Baptistery is in Piazza Duomo.
The Archaeological Museum is inside the Visconti Citadel. A guided visit to the Colleoni chapel costs from €14, and a guided tour of the Monumental Cemetery of Bergamo costs from €15.
Visitors who like history and art will find enough here for a full day. Those who prefer open air will do better with the walls.
Casoncello, local food and November events
Typical dishes can be tasted in high-end restaurants and traditional taverns. They can also be bought in historic shops and local food markets. Casoncello is the dish the city celebrates, and the local press says Bergamaschi and tourists are greedy for it.
Lost in Translation 2026 runs until November 7 in Bergamo, with a closing concert in Nembro. The Festival Donizetti Opera 2026 runs from November 13 to 29 at Teatro Donizetti and Teatro Sociale, Piazza Cavour 15.
Bergamo suits walkers, food lovers and opera fans. It suits beach seekers less, with its walls, squares, museums and tables. If you want a quiet few days of sightseeing and meals, it fits well.
