Where to go on the Amalfi Coast in September

Positano

The village has colorful little houses and churches with domed, majolica-tiled roofs. September afternoons there reach 83°F (28°C), and the sea is 76°F (24°C). It is the most expensive and most crowded village on the coast, so book a room early.

Amalfi

Amalfi is a former maritime republic with a cathedral that dates from the 9th century. The afternoon high is 85°F (29°C). The Arsenale and the paper museum are indoors, which helps on the rainy days.

Ravello

Ravello sits high above the sea, between 1,150 and 1,200 feet (350 to 365 meters), and has no beach of its own. It is the place for Villa Cimbrone’s gardens and its Terrace of Infinity, and for Villa Rufolo. Come for the views and the gardens, and swim elsewhere.

Maiori and Minori

The two towns sit side by side. The Sentiero dei Limoni (Lemon Path) starts near them, and Minori has the ruins of a Roman villa. Both make an easy half day on foot.

Vietri sul Mare

Vietri sul Mare marks the eastern end of the coast, on the Gulf of Salerno. It is known for its artistic ceramics, which makes it a good stop for a shopping morning.

What to do on the Amalfi Coast in September

The Path of the Gods from Agerola to Positano

The walk takes about 3 hours and links Agerola with Positano.

To reach the start, take a Travelmar ferry to Amalfi, then a shuttle bus to Agerola (Bomerano). Check the forecast the day before, since September brings five or six rainy days.

The Lemon Path from Maiori to Minori

This walk takes about 4 hours. It is simple, mixing town streets with stairs and natural trail. It starts near Maiori and Minori.

Leave in the morning to finish before the afternoon warmth.

The Emerald Grotto at Conca dei Marini

The grotto can be reached by lift or by small boats. The entrance costs ten euros and includes the small boat tour inside.

Check the sea conditions before you go, since boats depend on them.

The Arsenale and the Museo della Carta in Amalfi

The Arsenale della Repubblica is a medieval shipyard cut into rock. Its Arsenal Experience offers multilingual guided tours of about 30 minutes, included in the ticket price.

The Museo della Carta sits in an old paper mill at the start of the road to the Valle delle Ferriere. A guided tour follows the making of Amalfi’s ancient Bambagina paper. Both are indoors, so they fit a wet afternoon.

Villa Rufolo in Ravello

The villa dates from the 13th century. Its gardens hang between sky and sea, and the complex inspired Wagner. It stands 1,150 feet (350 meters) above the sea.

The villa has no restaurant service, so plan lunch in Ravello before or after. The gardens are best on a dry morning.
