February 59°F (15°C) 48°F (9°C) 2.4 in (60 mm) 7 58°F (14°C)
March 64°F (18°C) 51°F (10°C) 2.1 in (55 mm) 7 58°F (14°C)

*Long-term monthly averages.*

March is mild by day and cool at night. Afternoons reach 64°F (18°C) in Amalfi, and nights drop to 51°F (10°C). Positano runs a degree or two cooler, with 62°F (17°C) in the afternoon.

March brings seven rainy days, so most of the month is dry enough to plan outdoor sights. Pick a dry morning for the long walks and keep museums and villas for the wet days. The sea sits at 58°F (14°C), which matters on a boat more than on a beach.

February is cooler, with afternoons at 59°F (15°C) and the same seven rainy days. April is warmer at 69°F (21°C) and drier, with six rainy days. Shifting four weeks either way changes the layers you pack more than the rain you dodge.

Where to go on the Amalfi Coast in March

Amalfi

Its Duomo dates from the 9th century, and the Arsenale della Repubblica is a medieval shipyard cut into the rock. In March, afternoons of 64°F (18°C) make the walk between them comfortable.

Ravello

Ravello sits on a rocky spur between 1,150 and 1,200 feet (350 to 365 meters) above the sea. Villa Cimbrone has gardens and the Terrace of Infinity, and Villa Rufolo has gardens hung between sky and sea. Both are outdoor visits, so choose a dry day.

Positano

Positano has colorful little houses and domed churches with majolica roofs. It is also where the Path of the Gods ends. March afternoons here reach 62°F (17°C), a little cooler than Amalfi.

Maiori and Minori

These two towns share the start of the Sentiero dei Limoni, the Lemon Path, and the ruins of a Roman villa. The Villa Romana Marittima complex is in Minori. A town stroll and a short walk fit easily into one day.

Vietri sul Mare

Vietri sul Mare marks the far end of the coast and is known for its artistic ceramics. Shopping and browsing work well on a rainy March day.

Conca dei Marini

The Grotta dello Smeraldo is at Conca dei Marini.

What to do on the Amalfi Coast in March

The Path of the Gods from Agerola to Positano

The Sentiero degli Dei connects Agerola and Positano and takes about 3 hours. To reach the start, take a Travelmar ferry to Amalfi, then a shuttle bus to Agerola (Bomerano).

Start in the morning so the walk ends in the afternoon, when it reaches 64°F (18°C). Choose one of the dry days, since the month has seven rainy days.

The Lemon Path from Maiori to Minori

The Sentiero dei Limoni runs from Maiori to Minori and lasts about 4 hours. It is a simple route, partly urban with stairs and partly natural trail. The Roman villa ruins in Minori make a natural finish.

Wear shoes with grip for the stairs.

Valle delle Ferriere and the Museo della Carta

The Valle delle Ferriere nature park above Amalfi is dotted with waterfalls and streams. The nature reserve walk takes about three hours. The Museo della Carta sits at the start of the road to the valley, in one of the area’s oldest paper mills.

A guided tour at the museum follows the making of Amalfi’s ancient Bambagina paper. Visit it before or after the walk, or use it as the indoor plan if rain sets in.

The Emerald Grotto at Conca dei Marini

The Grotta dello Smeraldo can be reached by lift or by small boats. Entrance costs ten euros and includes the small boat tour inside.

March afternoons are cool on the water, so bring a layer. Check the opening hours before you go.

Villa Rufolo in Ravello

Villa Rufolo was built in the 13th century and stands about 1,150 feet (350 meters) above the sea. It is a monumental complex that inspired Wagner, with gardens hung between sky and sea. The address is Piazza Duomo in Ravello.

The villa has no restaurant service, so plan lunch elsewhere in town. It is a good half day when the sky is clear enough for the gardens.

Is the Amalfi Coast busy in March?

The heavy congestion on the coast belongs to June through August. In July and August the SS163 slows to a walking pace and SITA buses run packed. Amalfi sees many visitors in every period of the year, especially in the warm season, and March is not that season.

Positano runs the most expensive and most crowded of the villages. Praiano is the quiet, residential alternative. Salerno is the cheapest base, with a regional railway station and ferry and bus links to Amalfi. Sorrento is a practical base with a train to Naples.

Can you swim on the Amalfi Coast in March?

The sea averages 58°F (14°C) in March, both near Amalfi and near Positano. That is a monthly average, so a cold, windy day will feel colder than a calm one. April’s sea is warmer at 60°F (16°C).

Visitors can swim at the small beach at the bottom of the Fiordo di Furore. Marina Grande beach in Amalfi is very convenient and often crowded in peak season, which March is not.

What to pack for the Amalfi Coast in March

March asks for layers, a rain jacket and shoes that handle stairs and trails.

  • A warm layer for evenings, since nights drop to 51°F (10°C)
  • A light rain jacket or compact umbrella for the seven rainy days
  • Walking shoes with grip for the Path of the Gods, about 3 hours long
  • Shoes that cope with the stairs on the Lemon Path, a walk of about 4 hours
  • A small daypack with water for the longer walks
  • A sweater for the boat to the Emerald Grotto

What to know before visiting the Amalfi Coast in March

The coast is a linear strip of about 31 miles (50 km), and the Path of the Gods needs a ferry to Amalfi plus a shuttle bus to Agerola, so build in time for the connection. The Pompeii excursion runs every Monday, Wednesday and Friday and the visit lasts about 2 hours.

Villa Rufolo has no restaurant service. Check opening hours for the villas, the Emerald Grotto and the Museo della Carta before you travel.

Is March a good time to visit the Amalfi Coast?

February is cooler at 59°F (15°C) in the afternoon. April gains warmth and loses rain: 69°F (21°C) and six rainy days. A shift of four weeks buys a slightly warmer sea but takes you closer to the warm-season crowds.

If you want swimming, April is warmer, though the sea is still cool at 60°F (16°C). If you want fewer crowds, March sits well before the June to August traffic.
