When is the best time to visit Reykjavik?

For most travelers, July and August are the months to pick. The city’s festival calendar is full then, and the sea is at its mildest. A July-to-August trip can take in a street food festival, a Pride week, Culture Night and a jazz festival.

The sea is not the reason to come. Sightseeing and walking the city are.

For walking and sightseeing in the cooler months, April is the gentlest of the months with weather data. Highs reach 44°F (7°C), and the sun shines 5.5 hours a day on average.

Winter has its own events. Dark Music Days run January 28-31, 2027, and the Winter Lights Festival runs February 4-7, 2027.

  • If you want the beach: the sea peaks at 53°F (11°C) in August, so plan on city days and not swimming.

The coldest water comes in January through March, at 41°F to 42°F (5°C to 6°C). These are monthly averages, so a given day can run a little either way. The start of summer, in May at 45°F (7°C), is still cold.

When is Reykjavik cheapest and least crowded?

The calendar sets the busy stretch. From July 17 through the end of August, the city runs a festival almost every week, from the street food festival to Pride and Culture Night. Culture Night is a city center festival that draws a wide range of people, and many families and groups of friends meet up for it by tradition.

The landmarks are busy too. Hallgrímskirkja is one of the most visited places in Iceland, and the tower is among the most visited spots in Reykjavik. Harpa has drawn millions of guests since it opened in May 2011.

The trade-off is daylight.

January is hard for anyone planning long days outdoors.
