Lake Mývatn sits in North Iceland, and late winter is the time for snow activities: the Winter Festival runs from February 26 to March 7 in 2027, with competitions mostly on the frozen lake. Horse riding, dog sledding and snowmobiling all belong to the cold months.
January to April is cold, with highs around freezing and short, dim days in January. Plan for winter clothes and for limited sunshine early in the year.

When is the best time to visit Lake Mývatn?
For most travelers who want the lake in its winter form, late February and early March is the window. The Winter Festival fills those dates, and its competitions take place mostly on the frozen lake.
Swimming in the lake is not the draw from January to April. The Mývatn Nature Baths are the warm option: their geothermal water is drawn from depths of up to 2500 meters.
For walking and sightseeing, March and April bring more daylight. April has the most sunshine of the four months, 5 hours a day, and a daytime high of 37°F (3°C). January has the least sun, with half an hour of sunshine a day.
Winter activities add to the picture. Horse riding is possible on the frozen lake, and the area and surrounding highlands suit cross-country skiing, with a small ski slope across from Krafla Power Station.
- If you want the beach: not a Mývatn trip in these months, and the Nature Baths are the warm-water option. For sightseeing or walking: April, with the most daylight and the mildest highs. For winter events: February 26 to March 7, 2027.
Lake Mývatn weather by month
February and April tip the year. February’s high is 30°F (-1°C) with 6 to 7 rainy days. April’s high is 37°F (3°C), the first month in the series above freezing.
January is the hardest month for anyone who wants light, with lows of 17°F (-8°C).
When is Lake Mývatn cheapest and least crowded?
Two events mark the calendar: the Winter Festival, from February 26 to March 7 in 2027, and Oktoberfest Mývatn Öl on October 30 and 31 in 2026, which has limited tickets. Book rooms early for those dates.
The area has Slow Travel Mývatn, a guesthouse in Þúfa, and Vogar Travel Service, a family-run guesthouse opened in 1992 with 20 rooms with shared bathrooms and 8 with private facilities. Hlíð offers sleeping bag beds and 6 private huts.
Going off-peak is simple at the places that stay open. Dimmuborgir Guesthouse takes guests all year, and so does Vogafjós Farm Resort, on the east coast of the lake, where all rooms have a private bathroom.
Winter brings short days. January offers only half an hour of sunshine a day, so it suits travelers who come for the cold, the baths and the snow activities. Vogafjós adds a small draw: guests can watch the cows being milked through a glass window at 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.
