Best Time to Visit Rhodes: Late May, June and September for Warm Sea and Room to Breathe

Go in June or September and you get Rhodes at its best: warm days, a sea that pulls you in, and crowds you can live with. Late May is a good third choice if you don't mind cooler water. July and August work when school calendars leave you no choice, and they reward careful planning.

When is the best time to visit Rhodes?

September edges out June, especially for swimmers. After a whole summer of sun, the sea is still very warm, the days are clear and the heat has eased. Crowds thin after the first week of the month and prices begin to drop. Restaurants that were running on fumes in August find their form again.

In June, days are warm without being punishing, rain is very rare, and daylight stretches deep into the evening. Toward the end of June, more families show up as the school holidays begin across Europe. Even then, the island stays lively without tipping into high-summer chaos.

Late May brings lovely weather and a calmer island, but the sea is still cool. If swimming is the whole point, wait for June. July is excellent beach weather too, but you'll share it with the heat and the crowds.

Winter, December through February, is mild by northern standards, but it is still winter. Days are short, the sea is cooler, and rain falls on a good share of them, with January the wettest month. The rewards are green hills, dramatic waves on the west coast and bright, crisp days between storms.

Spring brings the island back to life. March already feels like early spring. By April the hillsides are green and scattered with wildflowers, the beaches are quiet, and the light is clear in a way August can't match. Swimming is mostly for the hardy. By May it starts to tempt the cautious, though it remains on the cool side.

June begins the golden run, with warm sea and long evenings. The meltemi, the Aegean wind, starts making occasional appearances, and most visitors welcome it as free air conditioning.

July and August are hot, dry and bright, with almost no rain. Nights stay warm well past midnight, and the sea is at its warmest. The meltemi now blows more consistently from the north and northwest. The wind is strongest along the west coast near Ixia and Ialyssos, which is great for windsurfers but less relaxing if you just want to lie on the sand. The island's terrain shields the east coast, so its beaches are hotter and calmer. The Old Town's stone streets trap heat, so sightsee in the morning and evening and spend the afternoon at the beach or the pool.

September is summer with more elbow room. October is underrated: still warm, with the sea good for swimming through most of the month and rain becoming likelier toward the end. November is changeable, with some warm, sunny days and others gray and wet.

When is Rhodes busiest, and when is it quiet?

July and August are the peak, and the last two weeks of August are the height of it. The Old Town and the northern beaches start filling up in late June. Cruise passengers pour into the Old Town from mid-morning to mid-afternoon. Spend that window at the beach and come back in the early evening, after the day-trippers have reboarded and when the light is better for photos. Lindos, with its hilltop acropolis, gets extremely busy in August, so an early start around seven in the morning helps a lot.

Quiet is easy to find if you head south or west. The west coast beyond Ixia, the Pefkos and Lardos coast, and Apollona and the inland villages stay roomier even in July. At Prasonisi, on the island's southern tip, one side stays calm while the other is battered by wind, and that rougher side attracts windsurfers and kitesurfers from all over Europe. Public buses to these places are limited and fill up in peak season, so many visitors rent a car for a few days to get around.

The shoulder months are far calmer than high summer. Late in October, some beach clubs and tourist businesses begin to close, so check before you go.

What festivals and events happen in Rhodes?

Rhodes has a calendar worth planning around. Carnival usually comes in March. Greek Easter, usually in April or May, is the island's most significant cultural event, with candlelit midnight processions, church bells and a big communal feast. On August 15, the island marks the Assumption of the Virgin Mary with church services and processions. At the end of August, Embonas, the island's wine village, holds its Wine Festival. In December, Christmas lights brighten Rhodes Town.

When is the cheapest time to visit Rhodes?

Winter, by a wide margin. Accommodation rates drop noticeably once the summer peak passes, and in July and August they can run 50 to 100% higher than in the shoulder months. The trade-off in winter is that many hotels and tourist restaurants close, and the beach is off the menu.

For value with real summer warmth, aim for the shoulder months, when prices sit below peak and the days are still warm.

Is Rhodes worth visiting in winter?

Yes, if you want calm, culture and atmosphere instead of beach days. The Old Town belongs to the people who live there, with empty lanes, soft light and cafés full of locals. Most shops close for the season, but museums and the Palace of the Grand Master stay open, along with supermarkets, bakeries and many restaurants. Rhodes Town stays alive all year, which makes it the best base. Lindos is peaceful but very quiet, and many of its hotels close.

Winter is hiking season on the forest paths of Profitis Ilias, around Seven Springs and through the Embonas countryside. The free Routes n' Rhodes app, for Android and iOS, maps 17 hiking and cycling routes. Afterward, village tavernas serve hearty stews and slow-cooked goat. Showers pass quickly, but pack layers and good shoes, since wet cobblestones get slippery. Buses run less often in winter, and the west-coast viewpoints, mountain villages and forest trails are easier to reach by car. If you rent a villa, make sure it has good heating.

Which month is right for you?

  • Beach swimmers: June and September, for warm water without the August crush.
  • Party-goers: July and August, when the nightlife in Faliraki and Rhodes New Town runs at full capacity.
  • Sightseers: the shoulder months, when you can walk the Old Town without a wall of day-trippers.
  • Couples: the shoulder months for romance without the elbow-to-elbow sunset crowd, or October for a quieter, post-season mood.
  • Families: July and August if school holidays decide for you, ideally in a villa with a private pool and some shade. The east coast has beaches with shallow, calm water, and the Valley of the Butterflies, where thousands of Jersey tiger moths gather in a shaded ravine, peaks in July. Families with flexible dates may find June appealing, since it falls before the busiest summer weeks.

If you're going in July or August, book six months ahead if you can, since good-value places sell out months in advance.
