Orlando in August: Weather, Crowds, Prices and the Springs at 75.6°F

Orlando in August averages a high of 91.6°F and a low of 73.7°F, with 7.69 inches of rain spread over 11.5 days that record at least a tenth of an inch. That is wetter than July, and wetter still than September. An hour from the parks, the spring at Wekiwa read 75.6°F, and that reading holds through the year while the air around it does not.

What the month takes back is dated by NOAA. The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, peaks on September 10, and concentrates most of its activity between mid-August and mid-October, so August sits inside that window. Orlando weather in August: average highs of 91.6°F and 11.5 rain days

Every figure here comes from the NOAA NCEI monthly normals for 1991 to 2020, measured at station USW00012815, the thermometer at Orlando International Airport, rather than from a gridded reanalysis cell averaged over the region. The normal August high is 91.6°F, the normal low 73.7°F, and the monthly precipitation 7.69 inches. Those are thirty-year averages for one airport on the southeast side of the metro area, and a single August can sit well off them.

Of the 11.5 days that record a tenth of an inch, 2.3 reach a full inch. Measurable rain therefore lands about three days in eight, and a genuine soaking roughly twice in the month. Florida’s wet season delivers most of it as afternoon convection rather than all-day gray, the National Weather Service pattern we summarize in the Florida orientation. Put the outdoor block before noon and treat two o’clock to five as negotiable.

Day and night are only 17.9°F apart, which is a narrow spread by American standards and simplifies the bag: nothing warm, everything quick-drying. Two pairs of shoes matter more than any jacket, because a soaked pair will not dry overnight when the low sits at 73.7°F. A thin rain shell beats a folding umbrella when the wind comes with the shower.

On August 15 the sun rises at 6:54 a.m. and sets at 8:05 p.m. Eastern time, for 13 hours 11 minutes of daylight (sunrise-sunset.org, converted from UTC). Orlando keeps Eastern time because it lies east of the Apalachicola River, while Pensacola and Destin run an hour behind on Central. Light holds past eight o’clock, which puts a six o’clock swim and a dinner after sunset inside the same evening.

How warm is Orlando in August? Nights at 73.7°F and what to pack

The month’s two poles are 91.6°F in mid-afternoon and 73.7°F shortly before sunrise, and the normal low never leaves the seventies. Half of all Augusts run hotter than the average by definition, so 91.6°F is the middle of the distribution, not its ceiling. Nothing in the record we hold gives a daily maximum or a daily record for the month, so no hotter figure is quoted.

In practice the morning is the day. At seven o’clock you are walking in mid-seventies air that is already humid, comfortable for two or three hours of trail, paddling or a park queue. By one o’clock the same clothes are wet through. Carry a second shirt, a hat that covers the neck, and more water than feels sensible, then plan to be under a roof or in a spring for the afternoon.

No August night comes anywhere near freezing: the coldest number the month carries in the normals is that 73.7°F low, and our sources count no sub-freezing August night at the station. One clarification on the water figures, since Orlando has no coast. The 75.6°F at Wekiwa, 75.0°F at Rock Springs and 74.3°F at Blue Spring are instantaneous USGS gauge readings taken on September 11, 2026, not monthly means, and not sea-surface temperatures, which run warmer because they are averages of daily maxima.

How busy is Orlando in August? Crowds, booking and Orange County’s 6% lodging tax

MCO boarded 27,859,783 passengers in calendar year 2024, more than any other airport in Florida and more than Miami, per the FAA. That is a full-year count, not an August one: no monthly breakdown is in our hands, and neither is an occupancy or room-rate series for Orlando, so August gets no place on a twelve-month price ladder here. The dated fact about late summer is NOAA’s, that the month falls inside the June 1 to November 30 season and inside the mid-August to mid-October stretch carrying most of the activity.

No booking-window figure passed verification, so none is invented. What is verified is why refundability matters in a season peaking on September 10. Two airports serve the city and they are not interchangeable: SFB boarded 1.4 million passengers in 2024 against MCO’s 27.86 million, and no drive time from SFB is given here because the airport’s own site blocks our connections. From the southeast, Brightline covers the 235 miles from Miami in about three and a half hours, roughly every two hours, at fares that move by date and class.

Orange County, where the parks and most of the hotel stock sit, levies a 6.0% transient rental tax on short stays, filed and paid alongside the 6% state sales tax (Florida Department of Revenue, form DR-15TDT). Together they add 12% to the room line, before anything a property charges for parking or resort services. If a quote looks like the pre-tax rate, add the 12% before comparing two hotels.

The one line where spending more changes an August day is time out of the sun: a room to retreat to at two o’clock, or the operator’s paid queue access at the parks. No ticket or express figure is printed, and not out of squeamishness. Disney and Universal price dynamically, and an amount written today is wrong within weeks, so get the quote from the operator for your exact dates. A hotel pool covers the two-to-five block that the normals make hardest, and it is used every single afternoon.

Things to do in Orlando in August: springs at 75.6°F and shaded boardwalks

August makes swimming the default plan rather than an option. Air at 91.6°F against a spring reading of 75.6°F is a drop of 16 degrees on entry, wider than the 14.0 that September’s cooler afternoons allow and just under July’s 16.4. The springs run the same temperature in February, when that arithmetic works against you. In August it is the whole reason to drive out of the city before breakfast.

Wekiwa Springs State Park is the nearest of them. Florida’s own 2024 facilities inventory counts 325 parking spaces, one designated swimming area, one canoe, kayak and tube launch, 15.9 miles of paddling trail, 13.7 miles of hiking trail and 1,435 feet of boardwalk. The USGS gauge there read 75.6°F, the warmest of the swimmable springs it monitors. North of the city, Rock Springs at Kelly Park, the tubing run, read 75.0°F on the same day.

Blue Spring State Park read 74.3°F and 168 cubic feet per second, and it has 187 parking spaces against 3,050 feet of boardwalk, the longest at any Florida spring park in that inventory. Its manatees are a winter event: the aquifer discharge stays put and the river around it cools, which is what gathers them, so August visitors get the walk and not the wildlife. The parking counts also explain the summer morning problem. Silver Springs has 1,686 spaces and three launches; Wekiwa has 325 and one, and turns cars away.

No free-admission date and no August event in Orlando passed verification for the month, so none is named. Entrance fees and opening hours are a gap we have to declare rather than fill: the Florida state parks site refuses machine reads and returned a 403, so no per-park fee or gate hour appears here. Check each park’s own page the week you go, and count the walking, which is free once you are through the gate.

Orlando in August: a two-day itinerary and sunrise times

Day one starts at a spring gate. Sunrise on August 15 is 6:54 a.m., Wekiwa has 325 parking spaces and one swimming area, so aim to be in the lot by eight and in the water by nine. Paddle or walk the shaded trails until noon, eat under cover, then give two o’clock to five to a roof: a museum, a park with indoor queues, or the hotel pool. Back out at six, with light to 8:05 p.m. for a second swim and a late dinner.

Day two takes the theme parks, with the same midday retreat built into the plan rather than improvised at the turnstile. If the sky turns, expect an episode more often than a washout: 11.5 days of the month record a tenth of an inch and only 2.3 record an inch. Orlando in August vs July and September: 91.6°F against 92.0 and 89.6

Set side by side, the three separate by less than most people expect. July runs 0.4°F hotter in the afternoon at 92.0°F, August holds the warmest nights at 73.7°F, and September brings the high down to 89.6°F. Rain is where August loses, at 7.69 inches against 7.46 and 6.37, with 11.5 wet days in July and August and 9.2 in September. The spring water sits outside the table entirely, at 75.6°F on the day it was read, because it is aquifer discharge rather than surface water.

Move four weeks later and you shed 2.0°F off the afternoon, 1.32 inches of rain and 2.3 rainy days, while landing on the statistical peak of the hurricane season, September 10. Move four weeks earlier and you trade 0.23 inches less rain for 0.4°F more heat and exactly the same 11.5 wet days, which is not much of a trade. Is August a good time to visit Orlando?

Yes for a trip built around water and air conditioning: families with a pool, park-goers who accept a scheduled midday break, swimmers heading for 75.6°F springs on a 91.6°F afternoon. No for hiking, all-day outdoor touring or any non-refundable booking, because 2.3 days of an average August drop an inch of rain or more and the storm window is open from June 1.

When the answer is no, September is the nearest correction: 89.6°F, 6.37 inches, 9.2 wet days, with September 10 as its own caveat. Real relief arrives in the November to April dry season that the whole state runs on, laid out in our Florida calendar. Of the three summer months, August is the one pairing the warmest nights at 73.7°F with 13 hours 11 minutes of mid-month daylight, so an evening swim still fits after a day spent out of the sun.

The last word

Book the refundable rate, take the room with the pool, and put the spring visit on the first morning rather than the last, because 325 spaces at Wekiwa fill early on a hot Saturday.
