Nassau Airport to Downtown Nassau: Taxis, Rental Cars, Transfers and Arrival Steps

You step out of the arrivals hall at Lynden Pindling International Airport and the Bahamian light hits you first, flat and bright, with the warm air smelling faintly of sea and jet fuel. Taxis wait at the curb, drivers call out to arriving families, and somewhere behind you a rental counter is already handing over keys. The airport sits at the western end of New Providence, so the ride into downtown Nassau is the first small decision of the trip, and a few straightforward choices cover it.

How do you get from the airport to Nassau?

For most travelers the easiest way into town is a taxi, because cars wait outside the US, International and Domestic terminals at any hour and the fares follow set zones, so there is nothing to negotiate. If you want the ride settled before you land, an airport transfer arranged through one of the livery or tour operators, or a private chauffeured car, puts a driver in your plan from the start. If you want your own wheels for the whole stay, the four rental companies at the airport are Avis, Budget, Dollar/Thrifty and Hertz.

What decides is mostly the size of your group, how much luggage you carry and where you sleep. A couple with two bags is the case the taxi fare is built around.

A larger family, or anyone traveling with golf clubs or boxes, will find that extra passengers and oversized bags add to a taxi fare, which makes a pre-arranged vehicle worth a look. Time of arrival matters less than you might think, since taxis do not keep office hours, but it does decide whether you want to drive yourself on an unfamiliar island after a long travel day.

Your hotel matters too. That is one more reason many visitors headed for a resort on the island think in terms of taxis and arranged transfers first, and sort out local buses later, if at all.

Your options from the airport

Taxis outside the terminals

Taxis wait outside the US, International and Domestic terminals, and the airport says they are available at any time. That makes them the simplest choice when your flight lands late or runs behind schedule. The fares are set by zone, so the price depends on where you are going on the island, not on traffic or the mood of the day.

The fare is based on two passengers, and each additional passenger adds US $5.00. Luggage beyond two pieces per person costs US $2.20 a piece, and oversized bags, golf bags and boxes carry a further US $3.30. Children under three ride free, which helps families with a toddler on a lap. For questions about a fare, the Bahamas Taxi Cab Union can be reached at 242-323-5818.

A taxi suits solo travelers, couples and small groups heading to a hotel, and it is the option that asks the least of you after a flight. The tip to remember is to count your bags before you count your fare, since luggage is where the extra charges come from.

Rental cars

Avis, Budget, Dollar/Thrifty and Hertz all have offices at the airport, and together they offer a wide selection of vehicles for exploring New Providence. The island is about 21 miles long, so a car puts the whole of it within reach, from the western end where the airport sits to the eastern tip near Paradise Island.

Each company has its own contact details. Avis is at +1-242-377-7121 and [email protected]. Budget is at +1-242-377-7405 and [email protected]. Dollar/Thrifty is at +1-242-377-0326 and [email protected]. Hertz is at +1-242-377-8684 and [email protected]. A rental fits travelers who plan to move around the island rather than stay put in one resort.

Arranged transfers and chauffeured cars

Airport transfers can be arranged through an extensive list of livery and tour operators, so a driver can be waiting for you instead of you looking for one. Private or chauffeured car service is also available at the airport for travel in luxury and style, which is the choice for a special occasion, a honeymoon arrival or a group that wants to ride together in one vehicle.

These services are arranged with the operator itself, so they fit travelers who like to know what happens after landing before they leave home. They also keep the first hour of the trip simple: you walk out of customs and your ride is already part of the plan.

Airport transfer options compared

Option Best for Where to find it How to arrange
Taxi Arrivals at any hour, small groups Outside the US, International and Domestic terminals Join the taxi stand, set zone fares
Rental car Exploring New Providence on your own Avis, Budget, Dollar/Thrifty and Hertz at the airport Contact the company by phone or email
Airport transfer Having a driver planned before you land Arranged with a livery or tour operator Through the operator
Private chauffeured car Travel in luxury and style Private car service at the airport Through the service

The trade-offs come down to certainty against freedom. A taxi asks for no planning and has no minimum wait written into it, but the final amount depends on your zone, your party and your bags. An arranged transfer or private car takes the same decisions off the curb and puts them in your hands before departure, which suits travelers who dislike surprises more than they dislike planning.

A rental car gives the most independence and asks the most in return. You deal with a rental counter on arrival, and you drive on your own from the first mile.

Whichever way you go, the distance is the same. Downtown lies roughly ten miles east of the airport, on the same island, so every option here is a single ride across New Providence and not a flight or a boat trip.

Arriving at the airport

Your first stop after landing is Bahamas Immigration. After that you collect your checked luggage, make your way through Bahamas Customs, and walk out into the arrivals area ready for vacation. The airport describes it as easy to navigate through Customs and Immigration, whatever your destination.

The airport has several terminals, with taxis outside the US, International and Domestic ones. It is the largest airport in the Bahamas and the country’s main international gateway, and it serves airlines including Air Canada, American Airlines, British Airways, Caribbean Airlines, Copa Airlines and Delta Air Lines, along with Alaska Airlines and the local carrier Bahamasair. For the latest flight information, the Aerocloud app is available from the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store.

Inside the airport you will find ABM machines for banking and currency exchange, a nurse’s station for medical needs, a post office where you can send mail before and after flights, and a Travel & Luggage Centre that offers luggage storage. Smoking is allowed only in designated curbside areas outside the Arrivals and Departure terminals.

When it is time to go home, the same airport handles the U.S. side before you board. U.S. Customs and Border Protection runs a preclearance facility here, so travelers heading to the United States complete customs and immigration before the flight and bypass those inspections on arrival. Programs such as TSA PreCheck, Mobile Passport Control, Global Entry and Automated Passport Control kiosks are offered to speed security and customs.

Facility Open
U.S. Preclearance (CBP), 1 Windsor Field Road Daily, 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
U.S. departure terminal security and U.S. Customs Opens at 6 a.m.

Travelers going to another island in the Bahamas or to a non-U.S. destination have a simpler departure, which is just clearing airport security. Preclearance can be reached at (242) 377-7125.

Good to know before you go

The U.S. State Department rates the Bahamas Level 2, “Exercise increased caution”, and says most crime occurs in Nassau on New Providence and in Freeport on Grand Bahama.

The Bahamian dollar is the legal tender and is worth exactly one U.S. dollar, but U.S. currency is widely accepted around Nassau, as are most major credit cards, so you can arrive without exchanging money. A 15% tip is added automatically to food and beverage bills at restaurants and hotels in Nassau and Paradise Island, so look at your check before adding more.

Tap water in Nassau and Paradise Island is safe to drink, and the electrical current is the standard North American one, so no adapter is needed. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, which is worth remembering when you plan flights and transfers in those months.
