The Space Coast in November: Weather, Sea Temperature, Crowds and a Two-Day Itinerary

The Space Coast in November swaps October’s steam for jacket-at-dawn mornings. Afternoons average 78.3°F, mornings 58.2°F, and the month’s rain comes to 1.79 inches, roughly half of October’s 3.46. For a trip built on beaches, rockets and wildlife, that is a forecast you can book a long weekend around. Fly into MCO, the airport our Florida guide pairs with the coast, and pack for both ends of a 20-degree day.

Florida’s dry season opens in November, and the Atlantic hurricane season runs until November 30 (the National Weather Service and NOAA dates sit in our Florida guide). Until that last day a late storm stays possible, so keep flights, rooms and the rental car refundable through the end of the month.

Every air figure here is a NOAA NCEI monthly normal for 1991–2020 from station USW00012815, and that station stands at Orlando International, 60-odd km (close to 40 miles) inland. It is a real thermometer rather than a grid-cell reanalysis, but it is no beach thermometer either. The coast runs cooler by day and milder by night than Orlando, and it gets a sea breeze the airport never feels. Read the 78.3°F high as a ceiling for the sand and the 58.2°F low as a floor.

Measurable rain, meaning 0.10 inch or more, falls on 3.0 days in an average November: about one day in ten. On a two- or three-night trip the odds favor a dry stay. Keep one indoor plan in reserve anyway, and the exhibit halls at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex are the obvious candidate.

The spread between the average high and low is 20.1°F at the airport station. In practice that means shorts at 2 p.m., a fleece for a sunrise on the beach, and a light layer again once the sun drops. The shore narrows the gap by staying milder at night than Orlando, without closing it. Pack one warm layer per person.

On November 15 the sun rises at 6:47 a.m. and sets at 5:33 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, for about 10 hours 46 minutes of daylight, according to sunrise-sunset.org. Along an east-facing coast the sunrise comes straight up out of the Atlantic, while sunset is watched from the Indian River side. Wrap up outdoor sightseeing by 5 p.m. and book dinner for after dark.

Can you swim in the Space Coast in November? Sea temperature and what it feels like

Sea surface off the Space Coast averages 74.9°F in November, according to the Open-Meteo Marine API over 2015–2024. That figure is the mean of daily maxima, the warmest reading of each day, so it runs a shade warmer than a 24-hour average would. It also comes from a different source and period than the NOAA air normals, and it is measured offshore rather than at Orlando.

For a swimmer, expect the first steps a notch below 75°F in the morning and close to it by mid-afternoon. That is 4.8°F cooler than October’s 79.7°F, cool enough that most people take a few minutes to settle in. Afternoon is the window: the air has climbed well away from its 58.2°F low, and you can towel off in the sun. Families with small children may prefer the hotel pool for long sessions.

We could not read wind or swell data for November, so we give no surf forecast and no wave heights. Check the National Weather Service Melbourne office’s surf zone forecast on the morning you swim, obey the lifeguard flags where they fly, and read our Florida safety guide on rip currents before the trip.

How busy is the Space Coast in November? Crowds and prices

November opens Florida’s dry season, the stretch that built the state’s winter trade, and our Florida guide places the year’s price peaks on holiday weeks and spring break, with early December among the quieter bargains. We found no occupancy series or monthly room rates for the Space Coast, so we rank no month cheapest or dearest. The Thanksgiving holiday week does fall inside November, and it sits with those holiday peaks.

We found no booking-lead data for the coast either, so we set no number of weeks. Book the Thanksgiving dates first, other November weekends next, and keep every reservation made for a stay before November 30 refundable while hurricane season runs. Rental cars out of MCO follow the same order, and our getting-around guide covers the toll setup.

We could not verify the Space Coast’s lodging-tax rate, so we give no percentage. Budget a line for it anyway on the final bill, next to the resort fees and parking charges our Florida guide flags at beachfront properties.

If one budget line deserves more money this month, make it an oceanfront room facing east. Sunrise comes out of the Atlantic at 6:47 a.m., so the balcony puts the morning’s best view a few steps from the bed, with no drive in the cool dark. Ask the hotel which rooms face due east before you pay the ocean-view premium.

Things to do in the Space Coast in November

Outdoor hours stretch in November. Afternoons sit at 78.3°F instead of October’s 84.7°F, mornings drop near 58°F, and rain falls on about 3 days instead of 5.3. Midday walks on open boardwalks and beach trails are comfortable again, and so is a long look around the outdoor rocket garden at the space center.

Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex sits on Merritt Island, with Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge next door, Canaveral National Seashore to the north and the Cocoa Beach Pier on the ocean side. We could not verify November hours, admission or parking figures for any of them, so we quote none: check each operator the week you travel, and see our Florida national parks guide for the seashore. Launch dates shift often and we list none, so check the published launch schedules before you fix your dates.

The sites stay the same all year while the air around them moves. The inland high falls 6.4°F from October to 78.3°F, and the sea falls 4.8°F to 74.9°F, so the gap between afternoon air and water shrinks from 5.0°F to 3.4°F. For anyone on the refuge’s wildlife drive or the seashore boardwalks, midday becomes usable walking time. More ideas across the state live in our Florida things-to-do guide.

We could not confirm any free-admission days in November, so we name none. Sunrise costs nothing: 6:47 a.m. out of the Atlantic from the sand, then sunset at 5:33 p.m. over the Indian River.

The Space Coast in November: a two-day itinerary

Be on the sand by 6:30 a.m. on day one for the 6:47 sunrise, fleece on. After breakfast, spend the cool morning on the drives of Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge (confirm its hours first). Lunch near Cocoa Beach, then swim around 2 p.m., when the air nears its afternoon high. Walk the Cocoa Beach Pier at 4 p.m., cross to the Indian River side for the 5:33 sunset, and sit down to an early dinner after dark.

Give day two to Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, arriving at opening time and staying into the afternoon. If the forecast shows one of November’s 3.0 wet days on day one, swap the order: the space center’s indoor halls keep you dry, and the refuge and beach move to the clearer day. When the sky holds and a second beach appeals more than more exhibits, drive north to Canaveral National Seashore instead. Two nights cover this plan, inside the one-to-three-night range our Florida guide gives the coast.

The Space Coast in November vs October and December

October November December
Average high (NOAA, Orlando Intl) 84.7°F 78.3°F 73.8°F
Average low (NOAA, Orlando Intl) 66.2°F 58.2°F 52.9°F
Precipitation 3.46 in 1.79 in 2.48 in
Days with 0.10 in or more 5.3 3.0 3.7
Sea surface (Open-Meteo Marine, daily maxima) 79.7°F 74.9°F 69.9°F

Air figures are the NOAA NCEI Orlando International normals for 1991–2020, sea figures the Open-Meteo Marine daily maxima for 2015–2024. From October to November the average high falls 6.4°F and the low 8.0°F. December takes another 4.5°F off the high and 5.3°F off the low. November is the driest of the three, with 1.79 inches on 3.0 rain days, against 3.46 inches on 5.3 days in October and 2.48 inches on 3.7 days in December. The sea steps down by about 5°F a month: 79.7°F, 74.9°F, 69.9°F.

Go four weeks earlier and you gain 4.8°F of sea and warmer evenings, at the cost of nearly twice the rain and a trip squarely inside hurricane season (see the Space Coast in October). Go four weeks later and hurricane season is over, but the water falls to 69.9°F, nights to 52.9°F, and rain rises by 0.69 inch. Swimmers should lean to October. Travelers who stay out of the water give up little by choosing December.

Is November a good time to visit the Space Coast?

Yes, for most trips built on the land side: space center days, refuge drives, seashore walks and beach afternoons at 78.3°F, with rain on about one day in ten. Couples and families who want long outdoor days without summer heat are the natural fit. Anyone whose vacation happens mainly in the water, and who wants that water near 80°F, will find November a notch too cool.

Those swimmers should look at October, when the sea averages 79.7°F by the same daily-maximum measure and afternoons reach 84.7°F. In exchange they get 5.3 rain days and the heart of hurricane season, so a refundable booking matters more. For the rest of the calendar, our Florida best-time guide covers every month statewide.

Of the three months around it, November alone pairs sea water near 75°F with fewer than four days of measurable rain.

The last word

Pick November if the plan is a two-night space-and-beach trip and a fleece fits in the bag. Hurricane season runs out on November 30, the sun comes up out of the ocean at 6:47 a.m., and heavy rain is scarce: a day with an inch or more averages 0.5 per November at the Orlando station, about one such day every two years. Book the east-facing room and set the alarm.
