JAMAICA · THE BLUE MOUNTAINS IN OCTOBER · 18.05° N
Pack for a Kingston forecast and Blue Mountain Peak will leave you cold. The summit of Jamaica’s highest range stands at 7,402 feet (2,256 m), and its October normals run to a 60.6°F high and a 53.2°F low, fleece weather on an island most travelers pack for in swimsuits. Every figure here comes from a climate cell over that peak. The lower slopes sit milder, so read these numbers as the top of your trip.
October also brings rain on 17 days in an average month and 6.73 inches in all, the wettest of the three autumn months we compared. That water lands on a forest UNESCO inscribed in 2015 as Jamaica’s first World Heritage site, where trees above 6,560 feet grow gnarled and coated in hanging mosses, ferns and tiny orchids. Bring a rain shell and budget one spare day in case a soaking day lands on your hike.

OCTOBER AT A GLANCE · THE BLUE MOUNTAINS
Go in October for the dripping cloud forest and pack for 53°F mornings, or wait for November if drier trails matter more: it logs 12.3 wet days to October’s 17.
WETTEST OF SEP–NOV · PEAK-CELL REANALYSIS · PACK FOR 53°F MORNINGS
Go for: cool hiking air, the Elfin Forest at its wettest, threatened endemic birds such as the Yellow-billed and Black-billed parrots, and a mountain break from a Kingston or Port Antonio trip.
Think twice before: flying in for summit views on a fixed date: rain falls on more than half of October’s days, and a downpour of an inch or more lands on 0.8 day in an average October.

The Blue Mountains weather in October: average highs, lows and rain days

| Average low | 53.2°F (11.8°C) |

Our normals come from Open-Meteo’s ECMWF ERA5 reanalysis, averaged over 1991 to 2020 for the grid cell at 18.05° N, 76.58° W, the cell over Blue Mountain Peak. A reanalysis is a weather model’s reconstruction of a patch of terrain, and our sources carry no station reading for the summit, so read the numbers as a modeled peak. On that basis October averages a high of 60.6°F, a low of 53.2°F and 6.73 inches of precipitation. Kingston, on the coast below, runs far warmer.
Rain of at least 0.10 inch falls on 17.0 days in an average October, a little more than one day in two across the month’s 31. Heavy days are rarer: 0.8 day records an inch or more, so most wet days bring showers you can walk through in a shell. For a two-night stay, expect at least one wet day and schedule the longest walk with a spare day behind it.
Only 7.4°F separates the average high from the average low, so an average day at the peak stays in a narrow, cool band. Pack a fleece or light insulated jacket, a hooded waterproof shell, quick-drying long pants and a spare pair of socks in a dry bag. Our Jamaica packing list covers the beach half of the suitcase.
October 15 gets about 11 hours 46 minutes of daylight. Jamaica keeps Eastern Standard Time all year, UTC minus five, so the sun rises at 5:58 a.m. and sets at 5:44 p.m. local time. Dark falls before six, and unfamiliar mountain curves are best driven in daylight, so aim to be back at your lodge by 5 p.m.
How warm is the Blue Mountains in October?
The average October day at the peak cell tops out at 60.6°F (15.9°C) and bottoms out at 53.2°F (11.8°C), a spread of 7.4°F. Both are averages across 30 Octobers, so single days run warmer and colder than either figure. Water temperature stays out of the picture: the cell sits inland at 7,402 feet, and our sources carry no sea reading for it. For swimming weather, head to the coast at Port Antonio.
At dawn, near the 53°F low, wear the fleece zipped with the shell over it and long pants. By early afternoon the air climbs toward 60.6°F, warm enough to walk in a long-sleeved shirt with the shell in your daypack, though a shower brings the jacket straight back out. Carry a dry base layer to change into at lunch.
Our sources carry no count of freezing nights for the peak cell, so we give none. The average October low of 53.2°F sits 21.2°F above freezing, and November’s average low of 52.0°F is only 1.2°F cooler. Single nights fall below the average, and we could not verify by how much.
How busy is the Blue Mountains in October? Crowds and prices
October falls in Jamaica’s off-season, ahead of the winter high season, and inside the Atlantic hurricane season that runs to November 30 (our hurricane-season guide has the details). We found no occupancy or room-rate series for the mountain lodges, so we rank no month cheaper than another. For what a Jamaica vacation costs across the year, see our trip-cost breakdown.
We have no booking-lead data for the Blue Mountains either, so we give no count of weeks. Book the room refundable, since 17 wet days and an open hurricane season both argue for room to move. Kingston is the nearest gateway, and our flights-from-the-US page lists the routes. Arrange the drive up before you land, using our airport-transfers guide.
We could not verify a lodging-tax rate for guesthouses in the Blue Mountains, so we give no percentage and no nightly amount. Ask your lodge whether its quoted rate includes taxes and service charges before you pay a deposit.
Paying more for a fully refundable rate changes October more than any room upgrade. With rain on a little more than half the days and hurricane season open until November 30, that rate lets you move a night, or cancel it, when the forecast turns. Compare the refundable and non-refundable prices side by side before you book.
Things to do in the Blue Mountains in October

Above about 5,900 feet (1,800 m), the vegetation of the Blue Mountains grows stunted, and above 6,560 feet (2,000 m) it becomes Elfin Forest, trees gnarled and heavy with hanging mosses, ferns and tiny orchids. October drops 6.73 inches of rain on the peak cell, against 6.06 in September and 4.58 in November. The moss stays soaked all month, and long summit views become the gamble.
The Blue and John Crow Mountains World Heritage site covers 26,251.6 hectares (about 64,900 acres) of tropical montane rainforest inside a 28,494-hectare buffer zone, climbing from 2,789 feet (850 m) to the 7,402-foot peak. UNESCO reports 1,357 species of flowering plant, about 294 of them Jamaican endemics and 87 found nowhere else. The bird list includes threatened species: the Jamaican Blackbird, the Yellow-billed and Black-billed parrots and Bicknell’s Thrush, a migrant. The Nanny Town Heritage Route traces the trails, look-outs and hiding places of the Windward Maroons.
The 61 species of liverwort and moss and the 11 endemic lichens stay put all year, and October changes only the air around them. Above roughly 2,950 to 3,280 feet (900 to 1,000 m), half the flowering plants are endemic, and in October you walk among them at 53°F to 61°F with rain on 17 days, against 12.3 wet days in November. We found no published trail times, entrance fees or guide rates for the park, so ask your lodge for current times and prices before you set out.
We could not find a published entrance fee, or a list of free sites, for the Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park, so we call nothing free and nothing paid. Confirm any fee with your lodge or guide when you book the walk.
The Blue Mountains in October: a two-day itinerary
Day one: be moving by 6 a.m., minutes after the 5:58 a.m. sunrise, with the air near the 53°F low and the fleece on. Spend the morning in the upper forest, where the stunted trees start around 5,900 feet and the Elfin Forest above 6,560 feet. Stop at midday to swap into a dry base layer. Start down by 3 p.m. and be off the mountain roads before the 5:44 p.m. sunset.
Day two: switch to people and birds. Moore Town, whose Maroon heritage UNESCO added to its Intangible Heritage list in 2008, pairs well with a night in Port Antonio, and a morning with binoculars on the forest edge may turn up a Jamaican Blackbird or a Yellow-billed Parrot. If the forecast shows a downpour, the kind that tops an inch on 0.8 day in an average October, drop the high trail, keep the heritage visit and head down to Kingston for an afternoon indoors.
The Blue Mountains in October vs September and November
| Normal (1991–2020) | September | October | November |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 62.0°F | 60.6°F | 59.1°F |
| Average low | 53.9°F | 53.2°F | 52.0°F |
| Precipitation | 6.06 in | 6.73 in | 4.58 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 14.7 | 17.0 | 12.3 |
Across the three months the peak cell cools slowly. Highs slip from 62.0°F in September to 60.6°F in October and 59.1°F in November, a drop of 2.9°F. Lows move even less, from 53.9°F to 53.2°F to 52.0°F. Rain climbs to its October high of 6.73 inches on 17.0 wet days, then falls to 4.58 inches on 12.3 days in November.
Moving four weeks earlier buys 1.4°F on the average high and 2.3 fewer wet days, but puts you in the Atlantic season’s statistical peak around September 10 (the Blue Mountains in September). Moving four weeks later cuts the wet days by 4.7 and the rain by 2.15 inches, at a cost of 1.5°F on the high and 1.2°F on the low, with hurricane season closing on November 30 (the Blue Mountains in November).
Is October a good time to visit the Blue Mountains?
Yes, for hikers who pack a shell and like mist, for plant lovers after the 87 species found nowhere else, and for anyone adding two nights of cool air to a Kingston or Port Antonio vacation. No, for travelers set on summit views on a fixed date, or packed only for the beach, since October brings 53°F mornings and rain on 17 days.
If October is a no, pick November. It keeps nearly the same temperatures, a 59.1°F high and a 52.0°F low, while wet days drop to 12.3 and precipitation to 4.58 inches, and the hurricane season ends on its last day.
Of the three months we compared, October alone puts 6.73 inches of rain onto a forest holding 61 species of liverwort and moss, for the wettest Elfin Forest walk between September and November.
The last word
Book the refundable room, keep one spare morning, and pick your summit day from the forecast once you are on the island. Up there you walk through far more than a trail. The Blue and John Crow Mountains together cover about 20 percent of Jamaica’s land, and the property’s only land mammal that does not fly, the threatened Hutia, lives solely in the John Crow Mountains, inside a national park protected by the Natural Resources (National Park) Act of 1993.
