Ocho Rios in April: Weather, Sea Temperature and How It Compares to March and May

April in Ocho Rios averages 85.3°F (29.6°C) by day and 73.3°F (22.9°C) before dawn, with 2.69 inches of rain spread across the whole month. Those figures come from a model reanalysis of the grid cell over town rather than from a station thermometer, and we say so again where it matters. The sea off the bay runs 82.5°F (28.1°C).

For a week’s vacation the date question is narrow: April sits outside the Atlantic hurricane season, and it sits four weeks before the rain total more than doubles. That combination is what makes an April booking behave differently from the same flights, the same room and the same itinerary moved to May, and it is the whole subject here.

The town itself is settled elsewhere: where to stay in Jamaica, getting around, and Negril vs Ocho Rios if the resort town is still open to argument. April’s own numbers start with the normals below.

Every figure here comes from ERA5, the ECMWF reanalysis served through Open-Meteo: a model’s best estimate for the grid cell centered near 18.41° N, 77.10° W, averaged over 1991 to 2020. No thermometer stands at that point. A reanalysis and an official station record can disagree, most often on the overnight minimum, so read 73.3°F as the model’s night rather than as a reading from a gauge.

The 2.69 inches arrive on 7.3 days that record at least a tenth of an inch, roughly one April day in four, which works out near a third of an inch on the days it rains. Days reaching a full inch: 0.0 in an average April. Nothing in the normals looks like a washout that eats a whole day, and the wet part of a wet day is usually counted in hours.

Day and night sit 12.0°F apart, so evenings outdoors rarely ask for more than sleeves. Pack for humidity instead of for cold: quick-dry clothes, a shell that folds into a daypack for those 7.3 days, and real sunscreen for strong midday sun at 18° N. Our Jamaica packing list goes item by item, including what the shower schedule does to a leather bag.

On April 15 the sun rises at 5:49 am and sets at 6:26 pm local time, 12 hours 37 minutes apart, from sunrise-sunset.org converted to Jamaica time. That puts the last excursion window in the late afternoon rather than the evening, and it means a mountain drive should be pointed back toward the coast before six. Our driving guide covers the road conditions behind that advice.

Can you swim in Ocho Rios in April? The sea runs 82.5°F

The sea off Ocho Rios averages 82.5°F (28.1°C) in April, and the number carries a footnote worth reading: it is the mean of daily maxima over ten Aprils, 2015 to 2024, from Open-Meteo’s marine data. An average taken across the full 24 hours would land a shade lower. Treat 82.5°F as the afternoon face of the water, and expect a 7 am swim to feel slightly cooler than that.

In practice the water sits 2.8°F below the average afternoon air, which removes the shock at the waterline entirely. An hour of snorkeling without a shorty is normal for most adults at this temperature, and the thing that ends the session is sun on the back of the neck rather than cold. Children come out when they are hungry, not when they are shivering.

We could not verify wind speed or swell height statistics for the bay from a primary source, so we publish none. The storm calendar we can date: NOAA’s National Hurricane Center runs the Atlantic season from June 1 to November 30, and April falls outside it. Our hurricane-season page handles the risky months, and the recovery page covers what changed after Hurricane Melissa.

How busy is Ocho Rios in April? Crowds, prices and when to book

We found no monthly occupancy series and no room-rate series for Ocho Rios, so we crown no month expensive and no month cheap. What is datable is the weather calendar around the booking: April closes a run of low-rainfall months at 2.69 inches over 7.3 wet days, and May records 5.75 inches over 13.4. Budget work with actual figures lives on what a Jamaica trip costs.

Since we cannot put a lead time on April rooms, sequence the booking rather than count weeks backward from it. Flights first, because they set the airport and therefore the drive (routes from the US). Room second. Ground transfer third and in writing, because that is the piece travelers improvise in an arrivals hall at 4 pm (transfer options and times). No number of weeks comes from us.

We could not verify Jamaica’s lodging-tax rate or how it lands on a final bill, so we give no percentage. Read any quoted nightly rate as a rate before taxes and fees until the property spells the total out, and put that gap in the week’s budget instead of meeting it at checkout. Know before you go collects the rest of the paperwork side.

One spending choice does change with the month. Paying up for covered and indoor facilities does more for a May trip at 13.4 wet days than for an April one at 7.3. In April the same money buys more as location: a room within walking distance of the water converts 12 hours 37 minutes of daylight into swimming rather than shuttle rides.

Things to do in Ocho Rios in April

Three consecutive outdoor mornings are a reasonable bet in April: 7.3 wet days out of 30, and 0.0 days averaging a full inch. A falls climb, a boat and a mountain drive can sit on three straight days without a fallback plan for each. Move the same three days into May, with 13.4 wet days, and one of them is statistically going to get rearranged.

Dunn’s River Falls is the anchor most visitors book, and it has its own page here. We could not verify its April admission price or gate hours from a primary source, so we quote neither. The same rule applies to the Luminous Lagoon boats and the coffee estates of the Blue Mountains. The wider shortlist sits in things to do in Jamaica.

River water and lagoon plankton pay no attention to the calendar. The air around them does: 85.3°F in April against 83.3°F in March, and sea surface 82.5°F against 81.6°F. Two degrees sounds like rounding error until you are standing soaked at the top of a climb in a breeze, and it is felt after you get out of the water rather than in it.

We found no free-admission day and no verified April event date for Ocho Rios, so we list none rather than invent a festival. What costs nothing in April is the daylight itself, 12 hours 37 minutes of it on the 15th, and a sea holding 82.5°F from the public sand as readily as from a resort’s.

Ocho Rios in April: a two-day itinerary

Day one runs ahead of the heat. Sunrise at 5:49 am puts breakfast in full light by 6:30 and the falls or the beach in play before nine, while the air is still climbing toward its 85.3°F average. Swim at midday, when the water at 82.5°F sits 2.8°F below the air. Keep 1 pm to 3 pm shaded and seated, then take the last stretch to 6:26 pm on the sand.

Day two keeps the clock and moves the driving to the front: the hills early, the coast after lunch, nothing important depending on light after six. If the day turns out to be one of the 7.3, flip the order instead of canceling. With no April day averaging an inch, showers clear inside a morning, so put the coffee estate, the craft market or a two-hour lunch where the rain landed.

Ocho Rios in April vs March and May

March April May
Average high 83.3°F 85.3°F 86.2°F
Average low 71.9°F 73.3°F 75.2°F
Rain 2.76 in 2.69 in 5.75 in
Days with 0.10 in or more 7.2 7.3 13.4
Sea surface (daily maxima) 81.6°F 82.5°F 84.0°F

The three months warm steadily and then hit a wall of rain. Highs read 83.3°F, 85.3°F, 86.2°F; lows read 71.9°F, 73.3°F, 75.2°F. Rainfall barely moves between March and April, 2.76 inches against 2.69, then more than doubles in May at 5.75 inches, with wet days going from 7.2 and 7.3 to 13.4. The sea climbs throughout: 81.6°F, 82.5°F, 84.0°F, all from the same source and the same periods as April.

Shift the trip four weeks earlier and you give up 0.9°F of sea warmth for nights 1.4°F cooler, with the rain effectively unchanged (our March page has the detail). Shift it four weeks later and you gain the warmest water of the three at 84.0°F, paying 6.1 extra wet days and roughly three extra inches of rain for it.

Is April a good time to visit Ocho Rios?

Yes for anyone whose week is built around water and daylight. Sea at 82.5°F, afternoons at 85.3°F, 7.3 wet days and no storm season to track makes for an uncomplicated vacation. No for two kinds of traveler: anyone who needs a documented low-season rate, since we have no rate series to point at, and anyone who sleeps badly at 73.3°F without air conditioning in the room.

If cooler nights matter more than warm water, take March instead of May: 7.2 wet days against April’s 7.3, 2.76 inches against 2.69, nights 1.4°F cooler, and water only 0.9°F behind. If the point of the trip is the swimming and rain is negotiable, May’s 84.0°F wins on that one axis. The year-round verdict ranks all twelve.

Of these three months, April is the only one that pairs water above 82°F with a month total under three inches of rain, and it does it well clear of the June 1 to November 30 storm window.

The last word

Book April for the water and the light, then spend the rest of the budget on being close to both, because a shuttle ride is the only thing that can take 12 hours 37 minutes of daylight away from you. One last date for the file: the month sits two months ahead of the June 1 opening of the Atlantic season and five ahead of the September 10 peak that NOAA marks as its most active point. An April trip needs no storm-tracking tab open.
