Where to go in Sicily in October

Valley of the Temples, Agrigento

The UNESCO World Heritage Site (since 1997) covers almost 1,300 hectares of temples, necropolises, fortifications and an underground aqueduct network. With that much ground to cover, mild October afternoons and early starts are a good fit.

Syracuse and Ortigia

Syracuse’s historic center holds the Greek Theatre, the Ear of Dionysius and the Grotticelle Necropolis. On the island of Ortigia you’ll find the temple of Apollo and the remains of the Temple of Athena.

Plemmirio Marine Park

The park extends for 7.5 miles (12 kilometers) around the Maddalena Peninsula and is split into three zones. With the sea near Catania at 73°F (23°C) in October, snorkeling and diving are on the table at Plemmirio.

Taormina

The Greek-Roman theater is at Via del Teatro Greco 40, and the town has hotels, B&Bs and holiday rentals. It combines well with the Castle of Taormina, which offers a free digital audioguide.

Zingaro reserve

The reserve lies between San Vito lo Capo and Scopello and can only be explored on foot, from the north entrance at San Vito or the south entrance at Scopello. Five well-marked trekking routes make the Zingaro reserve a good fit for hiking.

Madonie Regional Natural Park

This park in the province of Palermo covers 39,941 hectares and has been a geopark since 2001. The Madonie area offers widespread hospitality, so you can base yourself right in the park.

What to do in Sicily in October

Valley of the Temples on foot and by bus

The site address is Via Panoramica dei Templi Snc, Agrigento. In October’s mild weather you can cover the sanctuaries and fortifications over a long morning without hunting for shade.

A bus ticket costs Euro 1,20 at the kiosks in Piazzale Rosselli, Euro 1,70 if you buy it on the bus and Euro 3,40 for a day ticket. Stamp it in the validation machine as you get on. Buying at the kiosk before boarding saves 50 cents.

Snorkeling at Plemmirio

Swimming, diving and sport fishing are allowed in most of the reserve, and Entrance 27 is a strategic point for snorkeling and diving. Zone B includes the Grotta delle Stalattiti, the Grotta del Formaggio and the Grotta delle Corvine. The sea near Catania averages 73°F (23°C) in October, so a wetsuit makes a longer session more comfortable.

In Zone A you can’t swim, stop with a boat, fish or dive at any time of year. Mountain bike excursions and walks are also on offer in the reserve.

Taormina’s theater and castle

The Teatro Greco Romano di Taormina is at Via del Teatro Greco 40. The Castle of Taormina has a free digital audioguide for smartphones, so bring charged phone and headphones.

The castle also has a bookshop. Keep the Museo naturalistico regionale di Isolabella e Villa Caronia, at Via Nazionale 109, as a backup for a wet morning.

Walking the Zingaro reserve

The reserve has five well-marked trekking routes and five museums on traditional activities such as bluefin tuna fishing and giummara weaving.

You can also rent an inflatable boat or book a boat excursion. With only foot access from San Vito or Scopello, pick the entrance nearest your base and take water.

Is Sicily busy in October?

The festivals in this month’s listings all fall earlier: Gioiosa Gustosa on July 24 to 26, San Calogero in Agrigento July 3 to 12, and Street Food and Beer on August 4. Visiting parks and reserves out of season also reduces the impact on the local area.

Taormina’s hotels, B&Bs, serviced apartments and holiday rentals can be found through the Taormina Hotel Association. Booking a couple of weeks ahead is a reasonable habit for a trip with fixed ferry or park plans.

Palermo charges a tourist tax for a maximum of four consecutive nights, paid by guests not registered in the Palermo registry office. In Caltanissetta the tax enters into force on January 1, 2027, so it doesn’t apply on an October 2026 trip.
