Sardinia in July: Dry Heat, a 75°F Sea, Su Nuraxi di Barumini and Asinara

Yes, for travelers who want hot, dry days and a warm sea: afternoons reach 89°F (32°C) in Cagliari and rain is rare. July suits archaeology in the morning and the water in the afternoon.

The big nuragic site at Barumini opens to visitors only on guided tours that leave every 30 minutes, so the heat sets the schedule. Plan the visits early and keep the afternoon for the shore.

Where to go in Sardinia in July

Cagliari

The Cagliari tourist office is on the ground floor of the Town Hall at via Roma 145. Nuragica, a multimedia and sensory museum experience on the Nuragic people, is at via Roma 191. The Castle of San Michele hosts exhibitions and lectures, and the botanical garden covers five hectares. Monte Claro Park holds cultural and entertainment events in summer.

Su Nuraxi di Barumini

This is the most important nuragic complex in Sardinia and a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997. It is open every day of the year, and July heat makes an early guided slot the comfortable choice. One ticket also covers Casa Zapata and the Giovanni Lilliu Centre.

Asinara National Park

The park sits on the northwestern tip of Sardinia and has been a national park since 1997. Admission is free. Boats leave from Porto Nuovo at Stintino and from Porto Torres, so decide which port suits the rest of the day before booking a crossing.

Tharros

The ancient city lies in the Sinis landscape, between the sea and the ponds. Phoenician colonists founded it at the end of the 8th century BC, and it was abandoned in 1070. Guided tours and a bookshop are on site. Go in the morning, before the afternoon high.

Sadali

The village has a natural urban waterfall, Su Stampu de su Turrunu, which is 52 feet (16 m) high. The Trenino Verde reaches it on a guided excursion. The Culurgionès festival falls on the first Sunday of August, so a late-July trip comes just ahead of it.

Laconi

Laconi has the Aymerich park, which covers 22 hectares. Its truffle festival is held in June, so July brings the park without the festival. Walk it in the morning or late in the day.

What to do in Sardinia in July

Guided tour of Su Nuraxi at Barumini

The archaeological area can only be seen on a guided tour. Tours leave every 30 minutes and last about an hour, and they run in Italian, English and French. In July, take one of the first slots of the day.

Casa Zapata and the Giovanni Lilliu Centre are also guided, each about 30 minutes, leaving every 30 minutes. Wear comfortable clothing and non-slip shoes. Guide dogs are the only animals admitted, and only by reservation.

Asinara by bike, horse or tourist train

The trails cover five thousand hectares, and visitors can use a mountain bike, a horse, an off-road vehicle or the tourist train. The park is free to enter. With a high near 89°F (32°C) in the region’s south, take the train if the heat is a concern.

The Asinara donkey is the symbol of the park. The marine protected area was established in 2002.

Pedal boat on Lake San Sebastiano, Isili

At Isili, visitors can rent a pedal boat on the artificial lake of San Sebastiano. The dam of Barrocus on the Mannu river created it. It is an easy way to be on the water in a dry July.

The nuraghe Is Paras at Isili is 39 feet (12 m) high, a good stop on the same day.

Trenino Verde to Sadali

Sadali can be visited with the Trenino Verde on a guided excursion. The waterfall of Su Stampu de su Turrunu is the draw. Reserve the excursion ahead, since it is guided.

The Culurgionès festival, held every year since 1993, falls on the first Sunday of August. A traveler who shifts the trip by a few days into August catches it.

Turtles and cetaceans at Caprera

The information point for turtles and cetaceans on Caprera offers guided visits. It is a calm outing for a day when the sun is strong. Check opening times before going.
