Where is Polignano a Mare and what is it like?
Polignano a Mare sits in Apulia, a little over 18 miles (30 km) from Bari.
The historic centre is entered through the 16th-century Arco Marchesale, also called Porta Grande. Just offshore, the Rock of the Hermit is a small islet about ten metres (33 feet) from the coast and about thirty metres (98 feet) high. The Ponte Borbonico over Lama Monachile stands 49 feet (15 meters) above sea level.
The Chiesa Matrice dates back to the 13th century and is dedicated to the Assunta. The Abbey of San Vito was founded in the 10th century. In 2009 the town dedicated a bronze statue to Domenico Modugno, about three metres (10 feet) high, by sculptor Hermann Mejer.
What is there to do in Polignano a Mare?
Lama Monachile and the Ponte Borbonico
Lama Monachile, also known as Cala Porto, is a free beach in the town centre. It is made of rounded smooth pebbles, and the rocky seabed deepens rapidly. The Ponte Borbonico crosses Lama Monachile.
The beach has no services, so bring water and anything you need for the day. Direct access is inconvenient for people with disabilities.
North of the centre there are other sandy beaches, less crowded but still beautiful. The bays of Ponte dei Lapilli and Porto Cavallo are both ideal for bathing, a good alternative when the town beach is full.
Sea caves by boat, canoe or SUP
The caves can be visited by hiring a boat, canoe or SUP, and some can be reached by swimming. The Grotta Palazzese is a cave that houses a renowned restaurant.
A boat trip costs € 38.5, and so do Stand Up Paddle excursions. A private boat tour costs € 385 and lasts 4 hours, which makes sense for a group sharing the price.
Strong swimmers can reach some caves from the water. Everyone else should book a boat or SUP outing.
The historic centre: Arco Marchesale, Chiesa Matrice and the Clock House
Enter through the Arco Marchesale, then walk to the Chiesa Matrice, a 13th-century church dedicated to the Assunta. The Clock House is a building of medieval origin with a bell tower and a clock.
Il Libro Possibile takes place in the historic centre, Piazza Aldo Moro, Piazza dell’Orologio and Lungomare Domenico Modugno, July 8 to 11. Festival PerSe Visioni runs August 20 to 22.
Pino Pascali Museum and the Modugno statue
The Pino Pascali Museum is the only permanent museum of contemporary art in Apulia. It is housed in the former slaughterhouse, and the foundation is at Via Parco del Lauro, 119.
The bronze statue of Domenico Modugno stands in Largo Gelso, on Lungomare Domenico Modugno. It fits easily into a stroll along the seafront.
For swimming and boats, the beach and the caves are the draw, and the northern beaches are the quieter choice. For art and history, the museum, the Chiesa Matrice and the Abbey of San Vito fill a day. Travelers who need step-free beach access will find Lama Monachile less suitable.
Where to stay in Polignano a Mare
The historic centre is the base with the sea at its feet. Hotel Grotta Palazzese stands in the heart of the old town, above the water, and has 18 rooms suspended over the sea.
Suite 900 is on the top floor of the Palazzo del Suono del Mare. It has 75-square-meter interiors and a private 250-square-meter panoramic terrace with a white marble Jacuzzi. Reservations for the 2027 season are open, so summer dates can be booked now.
When should you go to Polignano a Mare?
May and June suit most travelers. In May the afternoons reach 77°F (25°C), and in June 86°F (30°C), warm enough for the beach before the peak heat. September (82°F, 28°C) and October (73°F, 23°C) also work for swimming days and walks in the old town.
July and August are the hottest months, with afternoons at 91°F (33°C) and lows of 67°F (19°C). They also bring the festivals. The main programme events are free and open to all, while some Ad Libitum shows are paid.
It suits walks through the centre rather than swimming.
