Where to Stay in Naples: Best Areas, Villages and Types of Stays

For a first stay that mixes Naples with day excursions, Via Toledo and the Spanish Quarters are the recommended base. The historic centre suits the old city, Chiaia is the quieter central choice, and Vomero offers a residential feel with views over the gulf. Naples is a vertical city with historic neighborhoods climbing steep hillsides, so the area you pick decides how much of the day goes to stairs, slopes and funiculars.

The best areas to stay in Naples

Via Toledo and the Spanish Quarters: for a first visit with excursions

This is the area recommended for a first stay that combines the city with several excursions. It’s a lively district, and some streets can be noisy, especially in the evening, so light sleepers should ask about the street before booking. The lower part of the Spanish Quarters sits a few steps from Via Toledo. The Pignasecca Market is close to the Montesanto district, where the Montesanto funicular starts its climb to Vomero.

Historic centre: for the history and atmosphere of the old city

The historic centre is an excellent choice for anyone who wants to wake up inside the old city. Spaccanapoli, San Gregorio Armeno, Santa Chiara, the Duomo and many churches and monuments are all here.

Chiaia: a central, quieter and more elegant base

Chiaia is a good alternative for a central district with a more elegant and generally quieter atmosphere. Shopping streets, cafés, restaurants and the seafront are nearby. The Chiaia funicular links the district with Vomero and first opened in 1889, so the hill above is a short ride away.

Vomero: for views and a residential feel

Vomero sits on the heights and offers a more residential atmosphere and magnificent views over the city and the gulf. Castel Sant’Elmo and the Certosa di San Martino are close, and the elegant shopping streets around Via Scarlatti are on the doorstep. The area was largely rural and sparsely populated before the funiculars were built. Today the Central funicular runs from Piazza Augusteo to Piazza Fuga, and the Montesanto funicular reaches Via Morghen in the heart of Vomero. Funiculars are part of the ANM network and use the same ticket as buses and metro.

Posillipo: for viewpoints and quiet parks over the bay

Posillipo is home to some of the city’s most spectacular viewpoints, elegant residential streets and peaceful parks overlooking the Bay of Naples. The Mergellina funicular connects Mergellina with the Posillipo hill.

Where to stay in Naples with kids, as a couple or on a budget

  • First visit with several excursions: Via Toledo / Spanish Quarters · lodging within a few steps of Via Toledo · on foot
  • Couple after a calm, elegant stay: Chiaia · central district near the seafront · on foot, with the funicular up to Vomero
  • History on the doorstep: historic centre · close to Spaccanapoli, the Duomo and Santa Chiara · on foot

What is the best area to stay in Naples?

Naples climbs steep hillsides, so a base near a funicular station saves effort. Vomero is only a ride of 3 to 7 minutes from the lower districts, and the ticket is the same as for buses and metro. Travelers who want to be in the middle of the evening life can stay in the Spanish Quarters and ask for a room away from the street.

Hotel prices and when to book in Naples

Naples charges a tourist tax per person per night, and it depends on the type of lodging. The 2026 rates are €1.00 higher than the base values in force at the start of the year.

2026 prices:

  • 5-star and 5-star luxury hotels: €6.00
  • 4-star hotels: €6.00
  • Short-term rentals (tourist rentals): €6.00
  • 3-star hotels: €5.50
  • B&B, guest houses and other extra-hotel facilities: €5.50
  • 2-star hotels: €4.50
  • 1-star hotels: €4.00

Two people staying three nights in a 4-star hotel pay €6.00 per person per night, so the tax adds up with every night of the stay. Accommodation managers must obtain a national identification code (CIN) through the regional digital service, and the Campania Region joined the national database of accommodation facilities and short-term rentals in August 2024. For a short-term rental, it’s sensible to ask the host for that code before booking.
