Naples in September: Warm Days, the Festa dei Gigli di Barra and Vesuvius Hikes

Yes, September is a good month for Naples if you want warm afternoons, a sea that’s still swimmable and a city full of festivals. Afternoons reach 80°F (27°C), and the Festa dei Gigli di Barra runs until September 28.

The month brings more rain than August, and the Vesuvius trail closes on days of orange weather alerts. Festivals and the tourist season also keep the city busy, so plan the outdoor days with some slack.

Six days of the month bring rain, and the sun shines about 8 hours a day on average. Keep the museums for a rainy day.

August is hotter, with afternoons near 88°F (31°C) and only four rainy days. October is cooler at 73°F (23°C) and wetter, with nine rainy days. September sits between the two, which makes it easier for long days on foot than August and drier than October.

What to do in Naples in September

Festa dei Gigli di Barra and the patron saint festivals

The wider series of patron saint festivals, called Beato chi le vive, runs from June 1 to October 17, with events in churches, squares and streets. Come before the 28th to catch the Gigli.

The city counts 26 festivals this year, up from 22 festivals and 50,000 participants last year. Estate a Napoli, the summer program, continues until October 8. Free guided walks in Secondigliano start on September 21 and run to November 23. The Avenue Secondigliano walk leaves from Villa Alfiero, Corso Secondigliano 200, at 10:30 a.m.

Vesuvius Great Cono trail

The Great Cono is nature trail no. 5. It starts at the square at 3,281 feet (1,000 meters) above sea level in Ercolano. The round trip takes up to 2 hours on the shortest route and 3 hours on the longest. From the square you can see the northern slope of Monte Somma, whose Punta Nasone peak stands at 3,714 feet (1,132 meters).

The ticket office and trail access close automatically on days of orange weather alerts or higher, and September has six rainy days, so check the forecast the day before. The high route on the crater summit is closed to visitors. The trail allows 360 hikers per hour, and the uphill group has priority over the downhill group at narrow points. The square has 4 parking areas.

Herculaneum

Herculaneum is part of the same UNESCO World Heritage Site as Pompeii and Oplontis. According to legend, Hercules founded it, and the eruption of Vesuvius buried it in 79 A.D. It receives a large number of visitors every year, so arriving early in the day is the easy way to keep the ruins calm.

The Campania Artecard PASS, including the LITE version, works for entry. Holders must go to the ticket office first to activate the card. Allow for the 80°F (27°C) afternoons and book the visit for the morning.

Castel Nuovo and the museums

Castel Nuovo, also called Maschio Angioino, is a castle, museum and picture gallery. It houses the Museo Civico and hosts exhibitions and cultural initiatives. The itinerary includes the Sala dell’Armeria, the Cappella Palatina (or di Santa Barbara) and the first and second floors of the southern curtain.

It’s a good plan for one of the month’s rainy days. Two more indoor options are the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli at Piazza Museo 18/19 and Gallerie d’Italia at Via Toledo 177. At Gallerie d’Italia you can use a physical or virtual audio guide through the app, or be guided by a cultural mediator.

Procida and Capri by boat

SNAV hydrofoils connect Naples to Procida with daily departures all year round. SNAV boats also link Procida to Ischia, at the port of Casamicciola.

The Capri Experience boat excursion includes a stop at the Blue Grotto. With the sea at 76°F (24°C), a day on the water is pleasant in September. Pick a clear day, since rain is likelier than in August.

Is Naples busy in September?

The city faces constantly growing tourism, and September overlaps with the Festa dei Gigli di Barra, the patron saint festivals and the final weeks of Estate a Napoli. Expect busy sights and plan the popular ones early in the day.

Book rooms ahead for September, and earlier if you want to be there for a festival date. For a first stay combining Naples and several excursions, the Via Toledo and Spanish Quarters area is recommended. The Spanish Quarters are lively, and some streets can be noisy in the evening. Chiaia is a quieter and more elegant central alternative, and Vomero offers a residential feel with views over the city and the gulf.

Tourist tax applies per person per night, up to a maximum of 14 consecutive days. Non-residents over 14 years of age staying in accommodation in Naples owe it. The city says the measure is needed to face the expected increase in tourist flows.

Can you swim in Naples in September?

The sea near Naples averages 76°F (24°C) in September. August is warmer at 79°F (26°C), and October cooler at 71°F (22°C).

Boat days bring you to the water. SNAV hydrofoils run daily to Procida, and the Capri Experience excursion stops at the Blue Grotto. Early September is the better window for a swim, before the water cools toward October.

What to pack for Naples in September

September asks for summer clothes by day, one warm layer for the evening and something for the rain.

  • A light jacket or sweater for nights that fall to 64°F (18°C)
  • A compact rain jacket or umbrella for the six rainy days
  • Sunscreen and a hat for the 8 hours of daily sun
  • A swimsuit for a sea at 76°F (24°C)
  • Earphones for the audio guide app at Gallerie d’Italia

What to know before visiting Naples in September

At Herculaneum, the Campania Artecard PASS must be activated at the ticket office. Tourist tax is charged per person per night for stays in Naples.

The Giardino e Ipogeo di Babuk, at Via Giuseppe Piazzi 56, covers about 1,000 square meters (about 10,800 square feet). Combine the sights by area to save walking time in the heat of the afternoon.

Is September a good time to visit Naples?

Yes, especially for travelers who want warm weather, sea, festivals and a Vesuvius hike in one trip. Afternoons are comfortable at 80°F (27°C), and the sea is still at 76°F (24°C).

Compared with August, September trades some heat for more rain. August afternoons reach 88°F (31°C) with four rainy days, and September has six. Shifting four weeks later means less swimming and more umbrellas.

If you want swimming, go in the first half of September, when the water is closest to August’s 79°F (26°C). If you want to hike Vesuvius or walk the ruins, September’s 80°F (27°C) afternoons are easier than August’s.

Late September has the Secondigliano walks, which start on September 21.
