July at Bellagio is warm without being scorching. Afternoons reach 81°F (27°C) and nights stay near 64°F (18°C). That’s comfortable for a day of villas and ferries, and mild enough for dinner outside after dark.
The month has eight rainy days, meaning days with at least a millimeter of rain, and about eight hours of sun a day. A shower can still interrupt a day, so keep a light rain layer in the bag. Plan gardens and walks for the morning, and keep museums and covered visits as the fallback. With more than 15 hours of daylight in mid-July, evenings are long.
June is a few degrees cooler and has ten rainy days. August is almost as warm as July, with about ten rainy days and less sun each day. July sits between the two as the drier and sunnier month, and daylight is already shortening by August.
Where to go on Lake Como in July
Bellagio
Bellagio is known as “La Perla del Lago”. The Villa Serbelloni park is open on guided tours, so July visitors should book a slot in the morning or the afternoon.
Villa del Balbianello, Lenno
The villa stands in Lenno, on the Como side of the lake, and is managed by the FAI. The complex includes the villa on 6 levels, the Loggia Durini, the Loggia Segrè with its historic park, and the Dosso di Lavedo. Cars can’t reach it. That makes the boat or a walk from Lenno part of the visit.
Villa Carlotta, Tremezzina
Villa Carlotta is on Via Statale in Tremezzo, within Tremezzina. Its original Italian garden is known for camellia, azalea, rhododendron, rose and hydrangea blooms. The villa also offers themed tours and workshops, so check what’s on for your dates.
Varenna
Varenna sits on the Lecco branch of the lake. Villa Monastero is here, with the botanical garden of Villa Cipressi next door. Varenna is also a ferry stop, so it pairs easily with Bellagio.
Como
The city museum system includes the Pinacoteca civica, the Tempio Voltiano and the Cattedrale. The Tempio Voltiano is the only museum in the world entirely dedicated to a scientist. A funicular runs from Piazza Alcide De Gasperi, a stone’s throw from the lake, up to Brunate. It’s a useful way to see the lake from above.
What to do on Lake Como in July
Ferry hopping between Como, Bellagio, Varenna and Menaggio
Navigazione Laghi runs the ferry service, with 42 stops around the lake. They include Como, Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio, Cadenabbia, Lecco and Colico. A car ferry also links Cadenabbia to Bellagio and Varenna.
In summer and on holidays there can be queues at the ticket offices. Buy early in the day and spend the hours in between on deck.
The Greenway del Lago di Como on foot
The Greenway runs from Colonno to Cadenabbia di Griante, about 6 miles (10 km). You can walk it one way and come back by the C110 bus line or by boat. With afternoons near 81°F (27°C), a morning start keeps it pleasant.
Lenno holds a weekly market on the lakeside on Tuesdays. It makes a good stop if your walk falls on that day.
Villa tours: Balbianello, Carlotta and the Melzi gardens
A guided itinerary covers Villa del Balbianello, Villa Carlotta and the gardens of Villa Melzi in Bellagio. It runs every day, weekends included, by reservation. The Balbianello ticket includes a guided tour of the interiors and a self-guided visit of the garden, terraces and Loggia Durini.
Board the boat early. Villa del Balbianello can’t be reached by car.
Walks from Varenna on the Sentiero del Viandante
Varenna is a stop on the Sentiero del Viandante, the trekking route along the eastern side of the lake. From here you can reach Bellano, Lierna and Albiga on routes of increasing difficulty and length. Pick the shortest one first if you’re unsure.
Water sports at Colico
Colico is where surfers wait for the Breva or the Tivano, the winds of Lake Como. The gentle wind on this part of the coast makes it a place for water sports. The lake offers sailing, trekking, climbing and paragliding as well.
Families find equipped harbours and lidos along the shore, plus boat trips and excursions. If wind matters to your plans, give yourself a few days here rather than one.
Is Lake Como busy in July?
July falls in the season when the villa areas see heavy traffic and parking difficulties, especially on weekends. Ferry ticket offices can also have queues in summer and on holidays. A weekday visit is easier than a Saturday or Sunday.
Book rooms and tours before you travel. The cellar tour of Révolt da Stazuna is limited to a restricted number of participants, so reserve it ahead.
The guided tour ‘Le bellezze del Lago di Como’ starts from €300, and that price does not include entrance fees or transport. Access to the Isola Comacina is subject to a fee.
