Rain falls on about three days in the month, and the total is under an inch. A shower is unlikely to change your plans. The heat does, so plan the Uffizi or Palazzo Vecchio for the middle of the day and keep walking sights and gardens for the morning.

June is cooler, with highs of 84°F (29°C), and rainier, with five wet days. August matches July on heat, at 90°F (32°C), and has four rainy days. Of the three months, July has the fewest rainy days.

What to do in Florence in July

Uffizi Gallery in the heat of the day

The collections run from 14th-century paintings to the Renaissance, with Giotto, Botticelli, Leonardo, Michelangelo and Caravaggio, plus a Medici collection of statues and busts.

The queue forms early, before the ticket offices open, and booking is suggested for busy times. Audioguides cost €6.00 and come in eight languages, English among them. The cafeteria on the second floor has a terrace with a panoramic view, a good place to cool down between floors.

Palazzo Vecchio and its tower

The palace is on Piazza della Signoria. Inside are Donatello’s Judith, Bronzino’s paintings in the Chapel of Eleonora and Michelangelo’s Genius of Victory. The Tracce di Firenze section on the ground floor can be visited free of charge.

The tower gives a view of Florence from the top and at points along the climb. The palace often hosts events and meetings that close part or all of the museum route, so check opening before you go.

Boboli Gardens, best in the morning

The gardens have grottos, the most important one by Bernardo Buontalenti, and fountains such as the Fountain of Neptune and the Fountain of the Ocean. There is also an 18th-century pavilion called the Kaffeehaus and the Lemon House, built by Zanobi del Rosso between 1777 and 1778.

Take this walk early, before the afternoon reaches 90°F (32°C).

Parco di Villa Vogel for a cooler break

The park is at Via A. Canova, 72. It has a water basin with cascades and jets, a play area, a skating rink and picnic tables. That makes it an easy stop for families in the hot part of the day.

Near Ponte all’Indiano there are playgrounds, trekking trails and little lakes. The Argingrosso green area is set up for cycling, horse riding and golfing.

Estate Fiorentina and the Pulci market

Is Florence busy in July?

July is a month of daily queues at the big galleries. A long line forms every day at the Uffizi and constantly at the Accademia, and in high season it can grow very long. Mercato Nuovo, known as the Porcellino market, is among the markets tourists visit most because of its central position. The Mercato Centrale is popular with residents and visitors alike.

Book the Uffizi ahead, since booking is suggested for busy times. Staff may close some rooms or itineraries temporarily when attendance is high, so an early slot helps.

Free admission on the first Sunday of the month cannot be reserved. On free days there is no priority access except for disabled visitors and their caretaker, pregnant women and European Union school groups within the daily quota. Plan for a queue on that day.

What to pack for Florence in July

July asks for light clothes by day, a sun plan for the afternoon and shoes that handle cobbles and park paths.

  • Light, breathable clothes for afternoons of 90°F (32°C).
  • A refillable water bottle and sun protection for the Palazzo Vecchio tower climb and the Boboli Gardens.
  • A small bag, not a backpack. At Palazzo Vecchio, small backpacks and large bags go to the free deposit.
  • Comfortable walking shoes for the Boboli Gardens and the trekking trails near Ponte all’Indiano.
  • A small umbrella for the three or so rainy days.
  • Coins and small bills for the audioguide at €6.00 or the radio whisper service at €1.50.

What to know before visiting Florence in July

The Accademia sits near Giotto’s Bell Tower and the Duomo, in the heart of the city.

Palazzo Vecchio can close partly or fully for events and meetings. Uffizi rooms can close temporarily when the crowd is large. Both are reasons to keep a spare hour in a day with fixed tickets.

Is July a good time to visit Florence?

Yes, if you want art, parks and summer evenings and you accept the heat. July has the fewest rainy days of the summer months, and the Estate Fiorentina program is running.

June is cooler, at 84°F (29°C), and the Flo.re Festival is on until June 29. You gain milder afternoons and lose some of July’s dry weather. August is as hot as July, with four rainy days against three.

Families have Parco di Villa Vogel, with its play area, skating rink and water basin, plus the playgrounds near Ponte all’Indiano. For the museums, go early, book ahead and keep afternoons for the shade of a gallery.
