Cinque Terre in September: Mild Afternoons, Hiking Trails and Medium Crowds

Yes, September suits Cinque Terre for walkers and swimmers. Afternoons reach 78°F (25°C) in La Spezia in September. The five villages (Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso al Mare) sit on 11 miles (18 km) of rocky coast with bays, beaches and deep water.

The month has two catches. Rain returns, with six rainy days on average, and the area has no large hotels, only B&Bs, rooms and apartments in historic buildings. Those are small, so rooms are the first thing to settle.

September stays warm without the August heat. Afternoons reach 78°F (25°C) and nights drop to 60°F (15°C). That’s comfortable for climbing between villages in the middle of the day, and a light layer is enough once the sun is down.

Six days in the month bring rain, and the total comes to 4 inches (98 mm). Keep the long outdoor sights, such as the coastal paths, for the dry days, and keep a rain jacket in your bag. Daylight is 12 hours 35 minutes in mid-month, so there’s time for a full walk and still a dinner in the village.

August is warmer, with afternoons near 85°F (30°C), nights near 66°F (19°C) and only three rainy days. October is cooler, with afternoons near 69°F (21°C), nine rainy days and about 11 hours of daylight. September sits between the two. It gives up a little of August’s dryness and gets a good deal more room to walk.

Where to go in Cinque Terre in September

Riomaggiore and Manarola

The two villages are linked by the Via dell’Amore. The visit is on reservation, and the Cinque Terre Card and the Trekking Card both include it. In September’s mild afternoons it’s an easy first walk, but book the slot before you go.

Vernazza

Vernazza is crowded by day. In the evening, when the day-trippers leave, it takes on a unique atmosphere. A few steps from the village is the Castello dei Doria. Stay for dinner if you can, and leave the walk to the next village for the morning.

Corniglia

Corniglia is the quietest village, with the fewest tourists. That makes it a calm stop on a medium-crowd month.

Monterosso al Mare

Monterosso has the largest accommodation offer of the five villages, which makes it the easiest base to book. In September the swimming days are the draw.

La Spezia

La Spezia is the end of the train line and the place for a wet day. The CAMeC, the modern and contemporary art center, is free with the Cinque Terre Card. The Civic Museums, among them the Amedeo Lia Museum and the San Giorgio Castle Archaeological Museum, have reduced admission.

What to do in Cinque Terre in September

Hiking the Blue Trail between the villages

The Sentiero Verde Azzurro (Blue Trail) links Monterosso, Vernazza and Corniglia. The Trekking Card covers the Corniglia to Vernazza and Vernazza to Monterosso sections, and it costs €10 for one adult day. September’s afternoon highs make the walking pleasant, and the six rainy days are the ones to watch.

The Via dell’Amore from Riomaggiore to Manarola needs a booking. The same card also includes the Podere Case Lovara, a FAI property, on the Levanto to Monterosso trail.

Guided excursions in the Walking Park

The programme includes hikes, nature and poetry trails in the Eugenio Montale and Cinque Terre Literary Park, and walks that take in local wine production.

Groups are limited to 15 people. That keeps them small, so choose the excursion early rather than on the morning itself. The Cinque Terre Card includes the guided tours according to the schedule.

Swimming, snorkeling and kayaking

The beaches allow swimming and diving. The Park also offers swimming, kayak and underwater itineraries, and it authorizes local diving centers for sea-watching courses. September is a month for the water, with afternoons near 78°F (25°C).

Wet days are best used for the museums in La Spezia. Choose the water for the dry afternoons, and keep the morning for the trail.

Riding the train between the villages

The Park says the train is the best way to reach the Cinque Terre. The Cinque Terre Treno MS Card gives unlimited second-class travel on regional trains between Levanto and La Spezia. It costs €14.80 for one adult day and €26.50 for two days. It also includes all the services of the Trekking Card.

Boats serve every village except Corniglia. The Cinque Terre Card can be bought online or at the Welcome Centers in the railway stations of the five villages. No reservation is needed to enter the Park area.

Is Cinque Terre busy in September?

September falls in Band B, yellow, medium attendance. The lowest band, A, covers March and the weekdays of May and October. Band C covers national holidays and the weekends of July and August. The train tends to be overcrowded in summer, and in the peak months trains reach the first village every 20 minutes. September is calmer than that.

The accommodation is small. There are no large hotels, only B&Bs, rooms and apartments in historic buildings, almost always run by local families. Book your rooms early, and look first at Monterosso, which has the largest offer.

The tourist tax is €3 per night, after the Cinque Terre municipalities raised it from €2 starting in 2025.

What to pack for Cinque Terre in September

September asks for light clothes for the afternoon, a layer for the evening and a plan for rain. The villages are linked by paths and alleys, so the footwear matters most.

  • Walking shoes with a good grip for the trails and the village alleys
  • A light layer for nights near 60°F (15°C)
  • A rain jacket, for six rainy days in the month
  • A swimsuit, for the beaches and the swimming itineraries

What to know before visiting Cinque Terre in September

The Via dell’Amore between Riomaggiore and Manarola is open only on reservation, so book it before the walk.

The Walking Park excursions run until October 31 in 2026, so September falls late in the season. Group tours are capped at 15 people.

Is September a good time to visit Cinque Terre?

Yes, September is a good month for travelers who want to hike, swim and still find some room in the villages. The afternoons are warm, the Walking Park programme is still running, and the crowds sit in the medium band.

Compared with August, you give up a little warmth and gain a calmer month, as August weekends fall in crowd band C. October is cooler and wetter, with nine rainy days, but its weekdays are in the lowest band.

If you want to swim, September is the month, with afternoons near 78°F (25°C). If you want fewer people, go on weekdays and spend evenings in Vernazza or a day in Corniglia, the quietest village.
