Bellagio Travel Guide: Villa Melzi, Lake Como Views and June Festivals

Bellagio sits on Lake Como, a few kilometers from Monte San Primo, the highest mountain of the Triangolo Lariano. It suits travelers who like villa gardens, small museums and a lake they can get out on, whether by kayak, sailboat or bike.

Spring brings the main constraint: April and May have 10 to 12 rainy days each. The festival calendar fills the evenings of June.

Where is Bellagio and what is it like?

The setting mixes lakeshore and cliff. The Sanctuary of Madonna del Soccorso lies on a cliff 1,375 feet (419 meters) above sea level, facing the island of Comacina. San Giovanni di Bellagio, a district of the town, holds an ancient tower house that is now a museum.

The town carries its history in its buildings. St. James Church is a Roman-Lombard example built between 1075 and 1125 by the Masters of Como. Villa Serbelloni has belonged to the Rockefeller Foundation since 1959.

What is there to do in Bellagio?

Villa Melzi and its lakeside gardens

The gardens of Villa Melzi stretch for almost a kilometer (0.6 mile) along Lake Como. They hold a private chapel, an aedicule in Moorish style, Egyptian statues and an orangerie with a museum.

The visit takes in the garden, the family chapel, the small museum and the Moorish outlook on the lakeside. Plan a slow walk along the water, with a stop at each of these.

The villa itself is closed to the public, so the garden is the visit. It suits anyone who likes to wander and look, and children can enjoy the statues.

Museum of Navigational Instruments

This private collection holds over 200 nautical objects. It is housed in an ancient tower house in San Giovanni di Bellagio.

In summer, the museum can be reached by boat or by the little tourist train Bellagio Express. Either way, the trip is part of the outing.

It is a good rainy-day stop, and it fits travelers who like the lake’s boating history.

Torre delle Arti, St. James Church and the Infopoint

The Exhibition Centre Torre delle Arti is in the medieval tower on Piazza della Chiesa. The Bellagio Infopoint is in the same tower, at Piazza della Chiesa 14.

Ask at the Infopoint what is on during your dates.

Sports on and around the lake

Bellagio offers canyoning, kayaks, motorboats and sailing boats for hire, mountain bike and electric bike hire, rock climbing, a swimming pool, a beach, tennis and paraglide flights.

The nearest golf club is an 18-hole course in Grandola ed Uniti, 20 minutes from Bellagio. Golfers need a ride, so plan for it.

Electric bikes and boat hire suit travelers who want to see the shore without long climbs. Climbers and paragliders have the cliffs and the mountain close by.

Festivals and evenings in June

The Bellagio Wine Festival takes place between Trattoria San Giacomo and Ristorante Bilacus. A via Crucis event runs from May 2 to January 3, 2027, so something is on even outside June.

If you want gardens and quiet museums, Bellagio fits well. With a taste for sport, the lake and cliffs have plenty. With evenings in mind, aim for June. It suits golfers less, since the nearest course is 20 minutes away.

Where to stay in Bellagio

Bellagio itself has several places to base yourself. Hotel Fioroni is 984 feet (300 meters) from the lake shore, a short walk to the water.

Villa Dei Sogni is on Via Privata Neer 17, and Belvedere Bellagio is at Via Valassina 31, 22021 Bellagio. Check each address on a map before booking, so you know how far you are from the lake and the center.

When should you go to Bellagio?

March through May is the stretch to consider. March has a high of 56°F (14°C), 6 rainy days and 6 hours of sun a day, so it suits travelers who want drier days and cool air. May reaches 69°F (21°C) but has 12 rainy days and 7 inches of precipitation.

April is the in-between month, with a high of 62°F (17°C) and 10 rainy days. Bring a rain jacket from April on.

January and February are cooler, with highs of 45°F (7°C) and 48°F (9°C), and only 4 to 5 hours of sun a day. They suit travelers who prefer a quiet lake to long days outdoors. June brings the festival evenings.

What to know before visiting Bellagio

According to the U.S. State Department, U.S. citizens can stay in Italy for 90 days without a tourist or business visa.

  • You will need proof of sufficient funds and a return plane ticket.
  • Italy sets a 10,000 euro currency limit on entry and on exit, or equivalent.
  • There are no vaccination requirements to enter Italy.
  • For a stay longer than 90 days, you must apply for a visa from an Italian Embassy or Consulate, then obtain a permit of stay (permesso di soggiorno) once in Italy.

Booking Bellagio for November: what to know

For a November stay, Belvedere Bellagio, at Via Valassina 31, lists direct booking advantages: best rate, customized packages and best cancellation conditions. Compare that offer with other lodgings before you commit. The via Crucis event runs through January 3, 2027, so November has something on.
