The port of Palermo is already in the city center, with AMAT urban buses and taxis in the port parking area. Once an airport bus or train has brought you into town, the ferry is close. Grandi Navi Veloci, Grimaldi Ferries and Tirrenia are the main companies docking there. Leave a generous margin before sailing and confirm the check-in time with your ferry company.

Renting a car at Palermo Airport

Palermo sits at the junction of three motorways: the A29 to Trapani, the A20 to Messina and the A19 to Catania. Inside the center, the ZTL (limited traffic zone) applies, and the U.S. State Department notes that cameras photograph license plates and fines are sent to the driver’s home in the United States. Paid blue parking zones are managed by AMAT and APCOA. Seat belts are mandatory, and outside cities headlights must always be on. Rural roads are generally narrow and often have no guardrails. If you’re stopped in a car registered abroad, be ready to pay a ticket in cash in local currency.
