Where is Cefalù and what is it like?

Cefalù sits on the coast of Sicily and is described as an elegant seaside town and an international tourist center. Its long beach is what the town is known for.

Above the town, the Rocca carries the Tempio di Diana on its western side.

History is easy to read here. Norman king Roger II founded the cathedral in 1131, and it is now listed by UNESCO as part of the site Palermo arabo-normanna e le cattedrali di Cefalù e Monreale. The Tempio di Diana is older still, dating to the 9th century BC.

What is there to do in Cefalù?

Cefalù Cathedral and Cloister

The Basilica Cattedrale is dedicated to the Transfiguration and stands on Piazza Duomo. It was founded in 1131 by Roger II, and it is the reason Cefalù appears on the UNESCO list.

The cloister next to it is the oldest in Sicily, with double columns and twin capitals. Take time to look at the capitals up close.

Mandralisca Museum

The museum is at Via Mandralisca 13. The Mandralisca Museum holds the famous Ritratto di ignoto by Antonello da Messina, a portrait whose sitter is unknown.

It also holds the Cratere del venditore di tonno, a krater (a large painted vase) from the 4th century BC. The two objects together give the visit a clear focus.

The Rocca, Tempio di Diana and Lavatoio

The Tempio di Diana stands on the western side of the Rocca and dates to the 9th century BC.

The medieval Lavatoio, a historic wash house, is in via Vittorio Emanuele and is always open.

The Rocca is a climb, so go in the cooler hours. In July and August the highs reach the mid-90s°F.

The sea, the beach and the Madonie Park

The long beach is the town’s signature. Stand up paddleboarding and surfing can be practiced on the beaches, and paragliding is also on offer.

Boat excursions and boat rental are offered by Marina Service and Marina Yatching. An inflatable boat can be rented without a boating license.

Inland, the Madonie Park is suited to trekking at any time of the year. One excursion crosses the Gorges of Tiberius by rubber raft and continues with a walk along the Pollina River. The Astronomical Park of the Madonie in Isnello can be visited, and the Acquaverde Water Park is inside the Costa Verde Hotel in Cefalù.

Summer events and festivals

August carries the most dates on the 2026 calendar: folk groups on August 2, an art expo from August 3 to 16, and concerts on August 5 and 21. Folk groups paraded in the Centro storico on August 2 at 6:00 p.m.

Concerts at the Lungomare Giardina started at 10:00 p.m.: Baby K on August 5 and Michele Zarrillo on August 21. A wine tasting followed the Pietro Adragna and Joe Castellano show at Castello Bordonaro on August 10 at 9:30 p.m. The International Folklore Review was on August 18 at 6:00 p.m. in the Centro storico.

If you want history, start with the cathedral, the cloister and the museum. If you want the sea, plan the beach, a boat rental or paddleboarding. If you want hiking or adventure, the Madonie Park and the Pollina River excursion fit. For evening concerts and festivals, August is the month.

When should you go to Cefalù?

May and October are the easiest months for walking the old town and climbing the Rocca. Highs are 79°F (26°C) in May and 78°F (25°C) in October, and the nights stay mild.

July and August are the hottest, with highs of 96°F (36°C) and lows of 75°F (24°C). They also hold the most events, so they suit travelers who come for the concerts and the beach and plan sightseeing for the morning.

Winter is cooler, with highs in the upper 50s°F (14°C) in January and February. The sea is 58°F to 59°F then, so water sports are for the warmer months.
