When is the best time to visit Sicily?

May and June, then September and October, suit most travelers. Afternoons run from the high 70s to the high 80s °F in Catania, warm enough for shirtsleeves without the full weight of July and August.

For the beach, aim for June through October. The sea passes 68°F (20°C) in June and stays above it until October, and it peaks in August. May is still cool for swimming, with the sea near 65°F (18°C).

For sightseeing and walking, May and October are comfortable. Palermo reaches 73°F (23°C) in May and 76°F (24°C) in October. The Zingaro reserve can only be explored on foot, with five marked trekking routes, so a cooler month makes those walks easier. For a quieter trip, the green itineraries around the Nebrodi, Etna and the Madonie lead to areas often overlooked in the high season.

Summer festivals cluster in July, with San Calogero in Agrigento from July 3 to 12 and Gioiosa Gustosa from July 24 to 26. Winter has its own events around Epiphany in January.

  • If you want the beach → June to October, with the water at 80°F (27°C) in August
  • For sightseeing or walking → April to May and October, when afternoons are mild
  • For quiet → the shoulder months, and visits to parks and reserves out of season, which see less impact on the local area

The year runs from mild, wetter winters to hot, almost dry summers, with the sea warming slowly and cooling slowly after August.

Three months tip the year. In January, Catania’s afternoons reach 61°F (16°C) and its nights drop to 41°F (5°C). July is dry in Catania, with less than half an inch of rain. December brings nearly eight rainy days in Catania.

August is the hardest month for walkers and anyone sensitive to heat. Catania reaches 94°F (35°C) in the afternoon in August, so ruins and hikes are better kept for the morning.

When can you swim in Sicily?

The sea passes 68°F (20°C) in June and stays above that mark through October, at 73°F (23°C) near Catania.

September and October water is still warm from the summer.

At Plemmirio, near Syracuse, swimming, diving and sport fishing are allowed in most of the reserve. Zone A, in front of the lighthouse, is closed to swimming all year. Entrance 27 is a good point for snorkeling and diving.

When is Sicily cheapest and least crowded?

July is full on the festival calendar, with Stragusto in Trapani and Gioiosa Gustosa, both in the last week of the month. Agrigento hosts San Calogero in early July, the Sere FAI evenings run from July 3 to August 29, and Trapani and Realmonte have their own July events. Patron saint festivals for Catania, Syracuse and Palermo also fall in the calendar.

The Nebrodi farm stays and the Madonie, with widespread hospitality, are good bases for a quiet trip.

Evenings like Passione Anni ’90 on July 18 in Realmonte, or the street food evening in Milena on August 4, belong to the warm months.
