Pisa Airport to City Center: PisaMover, Shuttle Train and Taxi

The PisaMover shuttle and the shuttle train both take about 5 minutes to reach Pisa Centrale, and the train costs 6.50 euros, from an airport only about 0.6 miles (1 km) from the station. The train’s last departure from the airport is 9:03 p.m., but the PisaMover keeps running until midnight, so a late landing still has an easy way in.

How do you take the metro or bus from Pisa Airport?

Two rail-style links serve the center. The shuttle train runs from the airport station to Pisa Centrale every day. The PisaMover is a shuttle between the airport and the central station, with one intermediate stop at the parking lots.

Both take about 5 minutes. The train leaves the airport between 6:53 a.m. and 9:03 p.m., and leaves Pisa Centrale between 6:38 a.m. and 10:02 p.m. The PisaMover runs every day from 6 a.m. to midnight all year, with later hours in the summer months.

The airport train station is inside the check-in area, so you can walk straight from the terminal. The PisaMover stop is just outside the passenger terminal.

A PisaMover ticket stays valid for 30 days from the day it’s issued, which helps if you’ll ride it again on the way home.

How much is a taxi from Pisa Airport to the city center?

The taxi rank is at the exit of the airport terminal. For a phone booking, Radio Taxi answers at +39 050 541600. With the center about 0.6 miles (1 km) away, the ride is short, and it’s sensible to ask the driver for the fare before you set off.

Arriving late at Pisa Airport: what are your options?

The airport is open from 4 a.m. until 12:30 a.m., or until the last flight’s arrival or departure time. If your flight lands very late, a hotel booked near the station makes the last leg simple. For the trip back, trains leave Pisa Centrale from 6:38 a.m. to 10:02 p.m. and the PisaMover starts at 6 a.m., so a flight before that hour calls for a taxi.

Renting a car at Pisa Airport

Most of Pisa’s historic center is a ZTL, a limited traffic zone, and unauthorized entry is fined. Hotel guests inside the zone can get a temporary permit from their hotel. The U.S. State Department notes that cameras photograph license plates and that fines are sent to the driver’s home in the United States. A driver of a car registered abroad who is stopped may have to pay a ticket immediately, in cash, in local currency. Seat belts are mandatory, and outside cities you must always use headlights. In autumn and winter, winter tires or snow chains are required on certain roads, especially in mountainous regions. Rural roads are generally narrow, often with no guardrails, and drivers often pass on the autostrada at high speeds. For a stay in the center, the 5-minute PisaMover or train ride spares you all of this.
