What to do in Milan in February

The Duomo and its terraces

The monumental complex includes the cathedral, the archaeological area with the remains of the Battistero di San Giovanni alle Fonti, the terraces and the Duomo Museum. The museum has 26 rooms, so it makes a good shelter on one of the five or so rainy days.

The Duomo stands on Piazza del Duomo. The YesMilano City Pass Standard includes the cathedral and the terrace with stairs, so it pays to check the pass before buying separate tickets.

Sforza Castle museums

One ticket gives access to all the castle museums, including the Ancient Egypt Gallery. The Panoramic Battlements add a stretch of the patrol walkways. The museums are closed on Mondays, so plan the castle for Tuesday through Sunday.

Guided tours of the museums are organized by Ad Artem. The City Pass also includes the castle museums. Parco Sempione lies next to the castle, about ten minutes on foot from Brera, and it works for a short walk when the afternoon is dry.

Pinacoteca di Brera

The gallery has 38 rooms and 500 works on display, from Italian and foreign artists of the 14th to the 19th century. That is a full indoor visit for a rainy February afternoon. The entrance is at Via Brera 28.

The Brera district sits a few steps from the Duomo and Montenapoleone. The walk from the Duomo takes about 12 to 15 minutes. The Lanza (M2) and Montenapoleone (M3) metro stops are each about 5 minutes away on foot. Palazzo Citterio is nearby at Via Brera 12.

The Navigli on foot and by boat

The guided itinerary combines a walk and a boat cruise. It starts in the neighborhood of the Basilica di Sant’Eustorgio, and guides take visitors through the Navigli district. The boat tour passes the Vicolo dei Lavandai, one of the wash-houses where women washed the city’s clothes. It ends with a walk along the alzaia of the Naviglio Grande.

The meeting point is Via San Marco 48, at the entrance of via San Marco. The boat departs from Alzaia Naviglio Grande 4. On the water the wind makes a cold day feel colder, so dress for it, with gloves and a hat.

What to pack for Milan in February

February asks for warm layers and something against light rain. Most of a day outdoors means standing and walking on stone floors and stairs.

  • Layers you can shed indoors, since afternoons reach 50°F (10°C).
  • A compact umbrella or rain jacket for about five rainy days.
  • Comfortable shoes for the Duomo terrace stairs and the 12 to 15 minute walk from the Duomo to Brera.
  • Gloves and a hat for the boat tour on the Navigli.

Is February a good time to visit Milan?

Yes, for travelers who want culture and food in a cool city. The Duomo, the castle museums and the Pinacoteca di Brera all fill indoor hours, and Mercato Centrale Milano has food stalls to eat from when the afternoon turns cold.

Shifting a month changes the weather more than the program. January is colder, with a 45°F (7°C) high, and has only about 9 hours of daylight in mid-month. March brings a 60°F (16°C) high and nearly 12 hours of light. Rainy days stay close to five in all three months.

If you want to spend long hours outdoors, on the Navigli or in the gardens, March is the warmer choice. If museums and churches are the plan, February works fine.
