Best Time to Visit Lake Como: Weather by Month, Rain, Crowds and Festival Season

Lake Como sits among the Lombard Prealps, and the best months for villa visits, lake walks and lido days run from June to September. July is the warmest and sunniest month, and June brings fireworks on the water on June 24.

Traffic and parking get hard on weekends and in summer, and boat ticket offices can have queues. May is the wettest month, so it suits the lake less than its mild highs suggest.

When is the best time to visit Lake Como?

For most travelers, June to September is the answer. Highs run from 77°F (25°C) in June to 81°F (27°C) in July, and the sun shines 7.6 to 8.4 hours a day in June, July and August. September cools to 72°F (22°C) and keeps more than six hours of sun.

For lake life, July and August are the strongest. The lake offers lidos, equipped harbors, boat trips and excursions for families, and these suit the warm summer weeks. Sailing and water sports also run here, and at Colico surfers wait for the Breva or Tivano winds.

For sightseeing and walking, June and September are easier than midsummer. The Greenway del Lago di Como runs from Colonno to Cadenabbia di Griante, about 6 miles (10 km). The Sentiero del Viandante trekking route follows the eastern shore through Varenna. Villa del Balbianello, Villa Carlotta and the gardens of Villa Melzi in Bellagio can be visited on a boat itinerary that includes a 2-hour crossing to Bellagio.

For a quieter trip, choose months outside summer. April and October are mild, with highs near 62°F (17°C), but both are wet. February is the driest month, though highs stay at 48°F (9°C).

The year runs from cold, short winter days to a warm, sunny July, with rain peaking in spring and again in autumn.

May tips the year. It has the most rain, 7 inches (178 mm), and 12 rainy days. July is the warmest month at 81°F (27°C) and the sunniest at 8 hours a day. August stays almost as warm at 80°F (27°C).

November is a hard month, with 7 inches (167 mm) of rain, 9 rainy days and 4 hours of sun a day. It is hard for hikers and for anyone who wants lake views. It does suit travelers who plan around indoor visits and the autumn food events.

When is Lake Como cheapest and least crowded?

Peak time is summer, plus holidays and weekends. Traffic can be heavy and parking difficult on weekends and in summer. Ticket offices for the boats can have queues in summer and during holidays. The first week of September also brings the Ambrosetti forum to Villa d’Este.

Off-peak travel means shorter waits at the ticket offices and easier driving. The Lenno lakeside market is on Tuesdays.

The trade-off is the weather. January has 4 hours of sun a day and December has 3.5. The lidos and water sports are built for the June to September heat, and the Greenway is far more pleasant on a dry day.

What redeems it is the events calendar: Tremezzina Gastronomica runs until December 13, and the ONde Lariane cultural festival runs until November 19.

Festivals and events on Lake Como through the year

St John’s Day and the end of June

On June 24, the feast of St John, the Lumaghitt fireworks light up the water near Isola Comacina. Stay until dark to see them.

Bellagio holds a traditional sagra at the end of June, three days of festivities. June also has pleasant weather, with highs of 77°F (25°C).

Villa d’Este in September

The Ambrosetti Forum The European House has been held at Villa d’Este every year since 1975, in the first week of September. Villa d’Este is now a hotel.

The annual Coppa d’Oro Villa d’Este, a concours d’élégance for cars, has been held there since 1929. Check the dates before booking a room.

Autumn 2026: October to December

Tremezzina Gastronomica runs from October 3 to December 13, and the ONde Lariane festival runs until November 19.

Villa del Balbianello hosts a dinner with the FAI on October 31 and a trekking event on landscape and climate change on November 7. The Floating Stage season also has appointments in Cernobbio, Tremezzina, Dongo, Gravedona ed Uniti, Colico and Malgrate.
