The Dolomites in December: Val Gardena Skiing, Cold Cortina Weather and Ossana Nativity Scenes

Yes, December suits anyone who comes for winter sports or for a nativity-scene village: Val Gardena joins the Dolomiti Superski area in winter, and the hamlet of Ossana shows almost 1,000 nativity scenes from November 27.

The catch is the calendar. The summer lifts of the Dolomiti SuperSummer run from May to November, and the Cortina d’Ampezzo night low falls to 20°F (-7°C), so the hiking trips of summer need a plan B.

Where to go in the Dolomites in December

Val Gardena

In winter Val Gardena becomes part of Dolomiti Superski, and modern lifts leave directly from its three villages: Ortisei, Selva di Val Gardena and S. Cristina. Selva sits at the foot of the Sella massif, S. Cristina at the foot of Sassolungo, and Ortisei has a pedestrian zone for shopping and food when the weather turns.

Cortina d’Ampezzo

Cortina d’Ampezzo is called the Queen of the Dolomites and is surrounded by the peaks. December brings a high of 34°F (1°C) and a low of 20°F (-7°C), so bring real winter clothes. Two main roads cross the town, the S.S.51 di Alemagna north to south and the S.R.48 bis delle Dolomiti east to west.

Seceda

Seceda rises to 8,264 ft (2,519 m) in the Odle Group. In winter it is a skiing area and the venue of the Gardenissima giant slalom race.

Tre Cime di Lavaredo

The Tre Cime lie between the Province of Belluno and South Tyrol, and Cima Grande reaches 9,839 ft (2,999 m). The ascent from the Misurina and Lake Antorno area covers about 4 miles (6 to 7 km) up to Rifugio Auronzo, at 7,654 ft (2,333 m). The loop around the peaks is about 6 miles (9.5 to 10 km) and takes 3 to 4 hours. Check road and hut conditions before setting out, and start early, since the day is short.

What to do in the Dolomites in December

Skiing and cross-country in Val Gardena

Val Gardena offers 311 miles (500 km) of slopes and 71 miles (115 km) of cross-country ski trails. Winter access is the main reason to come in December, since lifts leave straight from the villages.

The valley also lists 19 miles (30 km) of hiking trails. Pick a village for the base according to the pace you want: Ortisei for its pedestrian zone, Selva for being the highest village.

LUMEN, the mountain photography museum at Plan de Corones

LUMEN, the Museum of Mountain Photography, stands at 7,431 ft (2,265 m) on Plan de Corones. It fills a former upper station of the cable car, turned into a museum of 1,800 square meters.

Confirm the hours and how the cable car runs before going. It is a good choice for a gray afternoon.

Ossana and its nativity scenes

The hamlet of Ossana shows almost 1,000 nativity scenes between November 27 and January 6, 2027. The display covers the whole Christmas season, so a date in early or late December works equally well.

Dinner in Alta Badia

Alta Badia has two Michelin-starred restaurants.

Book ahead and ask about winter opening.

Are the Dolomites busy in December?

They do show a calendar built around Christmas: the Ossana nativity scenes run from November 27 to January 6, 2027, and Val Gardena is a ski destination in winter. Both point to a season where rooms in ski villages are worth reserving early.

Lodging runs from hotels and guesthouses to farm holidays and mountain huts around Seiser Alm. The 3 Zinnen region has five holiday villages: Prags/Braies, Niederdorf/Villabassa, Toblach/Dobbiaco, Innichen/San Candido and Sexten/Sesto.

One cost depends on the place. South Tyrol charges a tourist tax on top of the room rate, paid on site by guests aged 14 and over.

What to pack for the Dolomites in December

  • A hat and gloves for afternoons that stay near 34°F (1°C) in Cortina d’Ampezzo.
  • Ski clothing for Val Gardena’s 311 miles (500 km) of slopes, or cross-country gear for its 71 miles (115 km) of trails.
