Late spring and early fall are the months to aim for in Italy. May, June and September suit sightseeing and walking, and the sea turns warm enough for swimming from June.

When is the best time to visit Italy?
May to June and September give the most comfortable days for most travelers. In May, Rome reaches 74°F (23°C) and Florence 76°F (24°C), which is easy weather for a full day on foot. September still holds warmth, with Rome at 80°F (27°C) and 6 rainy days in the month.
For the beach, June to September is the window. In May the sea is still at 65°F (18°C), which is cool for a long swim. Naples and Palermo stay above 68°F (20°C) into October.
For sightseeing and walking, April and May are the gentler months. April highs run from 66°F (19°C) in Rome to 68°F (20°C) in Florence.
Winter suits a trip built around museums, with the Uffizi in Florence and the Vatican Museums in Rome as examples. January highs are 54°F (12°C) in Rome and 45°F (7°C) in Milan. Venice gets only 3 hours of sunshine a day that month, so short days shape the plan.
- If you want the beach → June to September, and into October for Naples and Palermo
- For sightseeing or walking → April, May, June and September
- For a museum trip in cooler weather → November to March, with rain gear and short days in mind

*Long-term monthly averages.*
The year runs from cool, damp winters to hot, dry summers. Rome goes from a January high of 54°F (12°C) to 89°F (32°C) in August.
Two stretches tip the year. Summer rain drops away in July, when Florence sees 3 rainy days and Naples 2.4. Then November brings Rome 9 rainy days, Florence 10.0 and Naples 10.2.
August is hardest for anyone walking cities all day. Florence reaches 90°F (32°C) and Rome 89°F (32°C), and Palermo nights stay at 75°F (24°C). Families with small children and travelers who want to climb towers or ruins will feel it most. Mornings are the easier hours.
When can you swim in Italy?
Venice, Naples and Palermo all pass 68°F (20°C) in June and stay above it through September. Naples and Palermo hold on through October, at 71°F (22°C) and 73°F (23°C). Venice has dropped to 66°F (19°C) by then.
These are monthly averages, so the first days of June can feel cooler than the figure and a warm spell in October can feel warmer. The peak comes in August: Palermo 81°F (27°C), Naples 79°F (26°C) and Venice 78°F (26°C).
On the Amalfi Coast, Positano has a pebble beach and boat tours along the coast, and the Fiordo di Furore has a small beach at its foot. On Lake Como the lakeside lidos and harbors suit families, and surfers wait at Colico for the Breva or Tivano winds.
When is Italy cheapest and least crowded?
The calendar sets the busy dates. Venice has Carnival from late January to mid-February, and the film festival in early September. Siena fills for the Palio on July 2 and August 16. The Venice Biennale art exhibition adds to the city’s calendar from May to November.
Winter has costs. Daylight is short: Venice gets 3 hours of sunshine a day in December and Naples 3.4. Some visits run on limited days, such as the Domus Aurea, open Fridays to Sundays, or the Villa Serbelloni park tours in Bellagio, which run Tuesday to Sunday.
The months to avoid depend on the traveler. August is hard for anyone who wants long days outdoors. November is hard for anyone who wants dry streets. Both can work with early starts and a museum or two held in reserve for the wet hours.
Festivals and events in Italy through the year
Venice Carnival
It opened on a Saturday at 5 p.m. in Piazza San Marco with the Gran Ballo di Carnevale.
The Festa Veneziana water procession runs along the Grand Canal, and the mask parades are the draw on the streets. February highs in Venice reach 49°F (9°C), so dress for cold air off the water. The International Kids’ Carnival was set for February 7 to 15.
Palio di Siena
The Palio is run twice a year, on July 2 and August 16, in Piazza del Campo.
A historical procession comes first, with fourteen groups and almost six hundred figures in costume. Book rooms early for both dates.
Venice International Film Festival
It sold 117,656 tickets.
September is also a good weather month in Venice, with a high of 75°F (24°C) and a sea at 73°F (23°C).
Venice Biennale: art, theatre, dance and music
The 61st International Art Exhibition runs from May 9 to November 22, 2026, at the Giardini, the Arsenale and other venues in the city.
The performing arts follow through the year: theatre from June 7 to 21, contemporary dance from July 17 to August 1, and contemporary music from October 10 to 24.
