The Amalfi Coast lies south of Naples, in the province of Salerno, facing Capri, Ischia and Procida. Late May, June and September suit most trips: the days are warm for walking and sightseeing, and the sea warms up for swimming from June.
July and August bring the heaviest traffic: the SS163 slows to a walking pace and SITA buses travel packed. From June to August the SS163 coast road becomes truly congested, and in mid-August a base that looks 20 minutes away on the map can mean an hour or more on a bus.

When is the best time to visit the Amalfi Coast?
Late May, June and September are the best answer for most travelers. Days are warm without the peak heat of midsummer, and rain is rare. May brings highs of 77°F (25°C) and about four rainy days in the month. September is warmer, with the sea still holding its summer heat.
For the beach, June to September is the window. The sea passes 72°F (22°C) in June and keeps climbing into August. Marina Grande beach in Amalfi is very convenient and often crowded in peak season, so go early in the day. The small beach at the bottom of the Fiordo di Furore is another place to swim.
For sightseeing and walking, April, May, June, September and October keep the climb manageable. The Sentiero degli Dei, from Agerola to Positano, takes about 3 to 4 hours. The Sentiero dei Limoni, from Maiori to Minori, takes about 4 hours and mixes stairs with natural trail. Start early and carry water in the warm months.
Events can shape the dates too. The Ravello Festival runs from June to September in the Villa Rufolo gardens. The grape harvest in Tramonti, Furore and Ravello falls in September and October. The main lemon harvest runs from March to May.
- If you want the beach → June to September, when the sea runs from 72°F (22°C) to 79°F (26°C)
- For sightseeing or walking → May, June and September, with April and October as cooler, wetter options
- For quiet → the months outside June to August, when the SS163 is congested; expect more rain from October to December

*Long-term monthly averages.*
The year splits in two: a hot, dry summer and a mild, wetter stretch from October to March.
July and August are the hottest months, with highs above 90°F (32°C) in Amalfi. November has 10 rainy days. June and September look alike on temperature, but September gets about five rainy days against two in June.
August is hardest for hikers and for anyone relying on buses, since heat and traffic arrive together. Positano runs a degree or two cooler than Amalfi in July, at 89°F (32°C).
When can you swim on the Amalfi Coast?
The sea passes 68°F (20°C) from June, at 72°F (22°C), through October, at 71°F (22°C). May, at 66°F (19°C), and November, at 67°F (19°C), stay below that mark.
These are monthly averages. In early June the water still feels fresh on a first dip, and in October it keeps some of the summer’s warmth. August is the warmest at 79°F (26°C).
Positano’s sea temperatures follow Amalfi’s within a degree or two.
When is the Amalfi Coast cheapest and least crowded?
Peak season runs from June to August. The SS163 slows to a walking pace in July and August, SITA buses travel packed, and ZTL restrictions are active in Amalfi, Positano and Ravello. Amalfi sees many visitors in every period of the year, especially in the warm season.
The price is weather and a cooler sea. November has about nine and a half rainy days, and the sea is near 67°F (19°C).
