How to Get to the Amalfi Coast: Flights, Airport Transfers and Driving from the US

The Amalfi Coast runs for about 31 miles (50 km) along the Tyrrhenian coast, and the nearest airport is Naples Capodichino. The coast has no railway, so the last stretch from Naples goes by bus, ferry, car or private transfer, and a private transfer from Naples to Positano takes 2 hours.

How do you fly to the Amalfi Coast from the US?

Naples Capodichino international airport is the nearest airport to Amalfi. It is more than an hour’s drive from the villages of the coast.

Alibus connects it with the city center, Central Station and the port. The ride to Central Station takes about 15 minutes and the ride to the port about 35 minutes.

Naples Airport is closed from 10:30 p.m. to 3:30 a.m., so a very late arrival is better planned around a hotel night in Naples.

How do you get from the airport to the Amalfi Coast?

The simplest door-to-door option is a private transfer. Naples to Positano is listed at 2 hours, with free cancellation, from €115. It saves you from handling luggage across several buses and boats.

The public route goes by Alibus to Central Station or the port. A shuttle bus also links the airport with Beverello pier.

Can you get to the Amalfi Coast by train, bus or car?

The coast has no railway at all. The Circumvesuviana train runs from Naples to Sorrento, stopping at Pompei and Herculaneum, but it serves no Amalfi Coast village. From Sorrento, SITA buses follow the SS163 and, in season, ferries go to Positano, Amalfi and other stops.

Salerno is the nearest useful railway station. From there SITA buses run west along the coast toward Vietri sul Mare, Cetara and Atrani, then on to Amalfi, Minori and Maiori. You can also take the ferry from Salerno to Amalfi in 35 minutes. Bus tickets are sold in the Unico Campania app or at official Sita Sud sellers. Timetables changed on June 8, 2026, and Praiano’s timetables have applied since September 14, 2026.

By car from the north, take the A3 motorway to the Vietri sul Mare exit, then the SS163. The SS163 is a narrow, winding cliffside road. Expect delays in July and August.

How do you get around the Amalfi Coast once you arrive?

Ferries are the easy way along the coast. They leave from the tourist ports of Positano, Praiano, Amalfi, Atrani, Minori, Maiori, Cetara, Vietri sul Mare and Salerno. Positano to Amalfi costs €13 for adults one way. Travelmar advises exploring by sea to avoid long car queues and parking problems. Tickets are sold at the company offices near the boarding points. Buses fill the gaps: SITA Sud serves routes such as Amalfi to Maiori and Salerno, Amalfi to Ravello, and Amalfi to Agerola. The Mobility Bus links Positano and Praiano.

A car is a harder choice in Amalfi. The historic center is a limited traffic zone, and unauthorized access is fined. The green zone allows access and parking only to residents with a permit. A new access control system started on January 1, 2026, and its permit portal works only through SPID. In Positano and Ravello the SS163 also brings traffic restrictions.

On arrival in Amalfi, the ferry ticket office is at the port. Ferries to Capri leave at 8:54 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. between April 1 and November 3, 2026, at €24 one way. A shuttle from near the port takes hikers to Bomerano, the start of the Path of the Gods. Buses back from Bomerano reach Amalfi at 9:15 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.

What documents do you need to board a flight to Italy?

U.S. citizens can stay in Italy for 90 days without a tourist or business visa, according to the U.S. State Department.

Passports must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned date of departure from the Schengen area. A 6-month validity is recommended, and the passport needs 2 blank pages for the entry stamp. You will need proof of sufficient funds and a return plane ticket.
