Positano Travel Guide: Beaches, Buses and Ferries, and Weather by Month

Positano sits on the Amalfi Coast, about an hour and twenty minutes by car from Naples Capodichino airport. It suits travelers who want a small, fully pedestrian historic center and a beach with the Li Galli archipelago on the horizon.

Getting there takes some planning. No village on the Amalfi Coast has a train station, and free parking in Positano practically does not exist. Most visitors arrive by road, bus or boat.

Where is Positano and what is it like?

Positano is on the Amalfi Coast, 5 miles (8 km) from Praiano along the SS163. The nearest big airport is Naples Capodichino, and Amalfi and Sorrento are linked to town by SITA buses.

The historic center is small and entirely pedestrian. Via dei Mulini is the central pedestrian street, Spiaggia Grande is the main beach, and Via Positanesi d’America leads on to the quieter Fornillo beach. From the sand you can see the Li Galli archipelago.

The church of Santa Maria Assunta was founded by Benedictine monks around the 10th century. The name Positano is said to come from the word “posa”. Legend says that in the 12th century an icon of the Virgin spoke the words “Posa, posa”. A Roman villa in town was buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D.

What is there to do in Positano?

Spiaggia Grande

Spiaggia Grande is the main beach in town, and it has flown the Blue Flag (Bandiera Blu) for more than twenty years.

This is the beach nearest the center, and the town can get very crowded in the summer months. Go early in the day in July and August.

Li Galli is visible from the beach, so a clear morning gives you a view to go with the swim. It suits anyone who wants to be a few steps from the shops and cafés.

Fornillo beach and Torre Trasita

Fornillo is farther from the center than Spiaggia Grande, so it usually sees fewer visitors. You reach it on foot along Via Positanesi d’America, which links the two beaches.

Torre Trasita is a 16th century watch tower with no roads or crowds of tourists nearby. It makes a calm stop on the same walk.

This side suits couples and families who want a calmer beach with fewer people. Bring water and shoes for the walk.

Santa Maria Assunta, Palazzo Murat and the MAR

Santa Maria Assunta stands on Piazza Flavio Gioia. Santa Margherita and Maria Santissima del Rosario are two more churches in town.

Palazzo Murat is an 18th century building, and the MAR is a Roman archaeological museum.

Opening hours and admission are not listed, so check them locally before planning a visit around a time slot.

Sentiero degli Dei and the Grotta dello Smeraldo

The Sentiero degli Dei is a trekking route you can follow from Positano. The Grotta dello Smeraldo can also be visited.

No hours or prices are given for either, so ask locally before you go. Both suit travelers who want something active beyond the beach.

For a beach holiday on foot, Spiaggia Grande and Fornillo are the match. For history, the churches, Palazzo Murat and the MAR are the stops. With a taste for walking, pick the Sentiero degli Dei. For an evening out, Music on the Rocks is a party venue. Anyone who needs a car at the door or a low budget will find Positano harder.

Where to stay in Positano

Positano offers luxury hotels, cheap hotels, B&Bs and holiday homes. For a base, the center keeps you close to the pedestrian streets and Spiaggia Grande.

The accommodation types in town include hotels, tourist-hotel residences, campsites, holiday homes, hostels, room rentals, apartments, bed & breakfasts and farm stays. Short-term rentals are counted too. The area from Capri to Salerno is very exclusive and expensive, so ultra low cost choices are not what to count on.

The Amalfi Coast draws millions of tourists, and the town can become very crowded in summer. Book early for those months. Rooms can be booked straight away with the hotel of your choice.

How do you get to Positano and get around?

Naples Capodichino is the airport to use. A shuttle service runs from the airport to Sorrento, and cars can be rented there even without a credit card if you book in advance.

By car from Naples, take the A3 motorway and the Castellammare di Stabia exit, then the SS145 toward Sorrento and the SS163 at Meta. The drive takes about one hour and twenty minutes, traffic permitting. From Salerno, follow the SS163 and arrive in about an hour with no toll to pay. By public transport from Salerno, take SITA buses from the terminal in via Vinciprova and change at Amalfi.

From May to October, ferries and fast hydrofoils take about 2 hours depending on the company, at around €25. In Naples they leave from the Beverello pier, about 1 mile (2 km) from the central station. In Salerno they leave from the pier near Piazza della Concordia, close to the train station. Both Salerno piers operate between April and October, and Travelmar also sails from Amalfi.

Once in town, the historic center is walked. SITA buses connect Positano with Amalfi, Sorrento and the other villages along the coast road. A 24-hour SITA ticket costs €10 and reaches all the surrounding villages. Buy tickets ahead in authorized shops, tobacconists or ticket machines rather than from the driver.

Driving needs thought. On peak days on the SS163, alternate number plates apply from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. In 2026 that is every day from August 1 to September 30. Motorbikes and scooters are excluded. Paid parking is marked by blue lines, and taxi fares rarely go below 130 euro.

When should you go to Positano?

May and June bring warm days without the peak heat. May has a high of 76°F (24°C) and June reaches 84°F (29°C) with the sea at 72°F. September stays warm at 83°F (28°C), and the sea is at 76°F.

July and August are the hottest months, with highs near 89 to 90°F (32°C), and the town can become very crowded. Ferragosto is held on August 15, and Positano Premia La Danza takes place on September 6. Fornillo beach is the calmer choice then.

Winter is mild but wetter. January has a high of 57°F (14°C), and November and December see rain on about nine days each. Early January brings village events at Montepertuso and Nocelle, and Festa di Primavera is held on March 23. Ferries run only May to October, so a winter visit is by bus or car.
