Pompeii Tickets, Opening Hours and Tips for Your Visit

A ticket for the ancient city of Pompeii costs €20, or €25 with the suburban villas, and the gates open at 9:00 a.m. in the current winter season. Until March 15 the last entry is at 3:30 p.m. and the site closes at 5:00 p.m., so a late start leaves little time inside.

The park caps entries at 20,000 a day, so booking online ahead of time is the safer plan, especially for a first Sunday or a busy season.

What are the opening hours of Pompeii?

Right now the winter hours apply: Pompeii opens at 9:00 a.m., the last entry is at 3:30 p.m. and the site closes at 5:00 p.m. The last entrance at Porta Ercolano is also 3:30 p.m. in winter. Pompeii is closed on December 25 and January 1.

  • October 15 to March 15: opens 9:00 a.m. · closes 5:00 p.m. · last entry 3:30 p.m.
  • March 16 to October 14: opens 9:00 a.m. · closes 7:00 p.m. · last entry 5:30 p.m.

From October 15, access to some domus (Roman houses) is reduced from 4:00 p.m. Plan the houses for the first part of the day.

When is the best time to visit Pompeii?

Arrive at 9:00 a.m. The winter last entry of 3:30 p.m. and the reduced access to some domus from 4:00 p.m. both favor an early start. The visit takes significant physical effort and the paths are uneven, so comfortable shoes help.

From March 16 to October 14, entries are capped by time slot: 15,000 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 5,000 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The afternoon slot is much smaller, so book it ahead online. Only small bags (30x30x15 cm maximum) are allowed inside. Larger items go in left luggage.

How to get to Pompeii

Pompeii has three entrances: Porta Marina, Piazza Anfiteatro and Piazza Esedra. For Porta Marina and Piazza Esedra, take the Circumvesuviana Napoli-Sorrento line to the Pompei Villa dei Misteri stop. For Piazza Anfiteatro, take the Circumvesuviana Napoli-Poggiomarino line to the Pompei Santuario stop. The Pompei Link train and bus connects Pompei station to the park in about 15 minutes.

SITA buses run from Naples and Salerno. By car, take the A3 Napoli-Salerno motorway to the Pompei Scavi exit. The park has no visitor parking, only paid municipal blue-line spaces and private car parks outside.

What to see at Pompeii

Start with the Antiquarium, which is included in the entrance ticket and best reached from Piazza Esedra. Since August 15, 2026, several new domus are open: the House of Menander, the Fullonica of Stephanus, the House of Octavius Quartio, the House of the Tragic Poet and the House of Pansa.

From June 14 the amphitheater is visible only from the southern entrance.

Is Pompeii wheelchair accessible?

Visitors with mobility difficulties can follow the barrier-free ‘Pompeii for all’ route, entering from Piazza Anfiteatro. The return is via Piazza Anfiteatro or Piazza Esedra, using the Antiquarium lift. The Artebus shuttle is not equipped with disabled access. Access to the Villa of Diomede for people with disabilities is reserved from the external road on Via Villa dei Misteri, after calling 081.8575400/333 or 081.8575347.

What else to see near Pompeii
