The best months for Kefalonia are June and September, with late May a close third. Days are warm without being hot, rain is light, the sea is swimmable and the beaches have room to spare.

When is the best time to visit Kefalonia?

June is the safest pick for a beach trip. The days are warm and mostly dry, the sea is warm enough to swim, and cafés and tavernas are open. The island feels lively, and you still miss the peak-season crush that arrives in late July and August.

September is just as good, and many visitors call it the sweet spot. The sea is still warm from the summer, the beaches empty out after the August rush, and the golden light over the Ionian makes for memorable sunsets. The grape harvest adds a local flavor.

Late May suits walkers and flower lovers. The landscape is lush, the weather is cool enough for hiking, and the beaches are quiet. The sea is still cool early in the month and turns pleasant by the end, so if you plan to swim every day, shift your dates toward June.

Winter, November to March, is mild but wet, the rainiest stretch of the year. Bring a rain jacket and a warm layer. On dry days the hills are green and the cliffs look dramatic under a moody sky. Snow is rare near the coast, though the inland mountains may see a light dusting.

Spring, April and May, is when the island wakes up. Days are mild, the odd shower keeps the hills green, and poppies and blooming olive groves color the countryside. Pack hiking boots first and a swimsuit second.

June brings long, mostly dry days, and the sea stays swimmable all month.

High summer, July and August, is hot, bright and very dry, and August is the hottest month of the year. Midday heat can be intense. The sea is at its clearest, ideal for snorkeling, kayaking and boat trips. Evenings are balmy, and the harbors fill with music and the smell of grilled seafood.

Fall, September and October, lets summer fade gently. September still feels summery. By October the landscape takes on autumn hues and the odd shower appears, but the island stays pleasant, and early in the month many travelers keep swimming.

When is Kefalonia busiest, and when is it quiet?

August is the busiest month, with July close behind. International visitors and vacationing Greek families arrive together, and beaches such as Myrtos, Antisamos and Xi fill up. Get to your favorite early, with a picnic and an umbrella for shade.

June and September are lively without the crush, and the beaches feel relaxed. Spring is quieter still: before the summer crowds arrive, you can watch the famous blue light in Melissani Cave in near silence.

Winter is the quietest season. Many beach bars, hotels and tourist services close from November to March, but the island stays open for slow, local-focused travel. Ferries and flights run regularly until about mid-October, then schedules start to thin out.

When is it cheapest to go?

Low season, roughly October to April, brings the lowest prices. Winter in particular offers great value on accommodations if you can live without beach weather.

The shoulder months are the compromise. September is noticeably more affordable than midsummer, and late May and June also cost less than peak summer, with weather nearly as good.

Is Kefalonia worth visiting in winter?

Yes, for travelers who want village life and quiet. Winter suits a slower kind of trip, with time for inland villages, drives along the cliffs and long, relaxed meals in local tavernas. Hikers can follow lesser-known inland trails near Poros and Sami, and monasteries, caves and viewpoints are close to empty. Christmas and Epiphany bring traditional Greek customs and festive meals to the island.

Winter is the wettest time of year, and December is the rainiest month. Keep a few indoor plans in reserve and save the scenery for the dry days.

What should Americans know before booking?

The U.S. State Department says U.S. citizens can enter Greece without a visa for tourism stays of up to 90 days. Your passport should have at least three months of validity beyond your planned departure date, and you may be asked for proof of sufficient funds and a return ticket.

To drive, Greek law requires a valid U.S. driver's license, and insurance companies may require an international driver’s permit. Greece has one of the highest traffic fatality rates in the European Union, so take the steep, narrow island roads slowly. Thieves in Greece are known to break into rental cars, so it is wise to take passports, valuables and luggage with you rather than leave them inside. Forest fires are common in the dry summer months and occasionally close roads, and transportation strikes can interrupt ferries and flights.

Book hotels, rental cars and tours well in advance for July and August, especially August. If you travel in spring or fall, confirm that your hotel or beach club will be open. For an October trip, check ferry and flight timetables for your exact dates before you commit.
