Pick your base by what you want your evenings to feel like. Mylopotas Beach suits a classic beach stay, Chora puts the bars right outside your door, and the port is calmer and more practical. The three sit close together and frequent local buses link them, so any choice keeps the others within easy reach.

Which area of Ios should you stay in?
Ios has no airport, so visitors arrive by ferry at the port, coming from Athens (Piraeus) or from nearby islands such as Santorini, Mykonos and Naxos. Three bases work for most trips: Mylopotas Beach, Chora (the hilltop main town) and the port area, called Ormos or Gialos. The bus from the port reaches Mylopotas, where most of the island's accommodation is, in about 10 minutes, with plenty of room for luggage.
Mylopotas Beach
This is the classic beach base: golden sand and clear water in a large southwest-facing bay, lined with tavernas, beach bars and water sports. At the far end, Drakos Taverna is known for fresh fish served at the water's edge.
The energy builds through the afternoon. In high season Far Out Beach Club gets the party going in late afternoon, and later the crowd rides a near-constant stream of local buses up to Chora. The late-night bars cluster at the south end of the beach, so check where a hotel sits before you book if you want early nights.
Ios Palace Hotel sits directly on the beach, with three pools, a very good restaurant and a pool bar overlooking the sand. Chora is a short bus ride away, or a steep walk of about 20 minutes. Levantes Boutique Hotel sits on the hillside above the bay, with an inviting pool area and wide views over the water. Hide Out Suites also overlooks the beach, with spacious, sophisticated rooms.
Chora
Katogi, a funky, buzzing tapas spot, is popular enough that it pays to book several days ahead. By day the village is quiet and lovely to wander. At night the clubs open and the center turns into one big party. The crowd tends to be young.
Stay here if you plan to go out often and want a short stumble home after a night out.
Liostasi Hotel & Spa is the standout, a refined boutique hotel that belongs to the Relais & Châteaux collection. It sits on a hillside a 5 to 10 minute walk from the heart of Chora, with a bus stop a few steps from the entrance. Rooms are spacious and bright, many suites have private terraces, and the top options add private pools or outdoor jacuzzis. There's a beautiful pool, an open-air spa and Grandma's, the best fine-dining restaurant on Ios. For something more modest, Armonia Pension is an affordable choice a couple of minutes on foot from the center, with a view over the village.
The port (Ormos and Gialos)
The port suits travelers who want convenience, value and quieter evenings. You're close to the ferry, shops, restaurants and frequent buses to Chora and Mylopotas, and Gialos Beach, a wide sandy beach, lies just north of the harbor.
Yialos Ios Hotel is a family-run hotel in a quiet spot near the ferry port, with Chora about a 15-minute walk away. Hotel Poseidon is a small, family-run place on slightly higher ground a short walk from the port, and Avra Pension is a clean, friendly classic. The climb from the port up to Chora is steep, so take the bus if you're hauling luggage.
Agalia Luxury Suites, a semi-secluded option
Agalia is a high-end boutique property about 1 mile from the port and 2.5 miles from Chora, with views over both the village and the harbor. Two quiet beaches are within walking distance. Town is far enough that you'll want to plan your transport before booking.
Calilo and the remote east
Calilo is a luxury eco-resort on secluded Papas Beach, and it's eye-wateringly expensive. The beach, with its giant platform sun beds, is the highlight.
Where should first-timers stay?
Mylopotas. It's arguably the island's best beach, buses run to Chora and the port, and you can sample the nightlife and still head back to a more relaxed base. Ios Palace Hotel is the top pick for a classic beach holiday.
Where should couples stay?
Liostasi in Chora is the polished choice, with the village a short walk away. Levantes above Mylopotas offers quiet luxury and a sea view. Calilo is the splurge for seclusion and romance. Agalia suits couples who want a private pool, which four of its 14 suites have, and don't mind the distance from town.
Where should families stay?
Families do well on Ios. The partying happens in Chora and starts late, so the town is pleasant to wander in the evening, and the scene is easy to avoid. Ios Palace puts you on the sand with three pools. At the port, Yialos Ios Hotel has triple and quadruple rooms. Agalia's two- and three-bedroom villas fit families and small groups, and Calilo works for families as well as couples. For self-catering, Hide Out Suites has villas with plunge pools and kitchenettes.
Where should budget travelers stay?
The port offers good value, with simple places to stay like Avra Pension and cheap places to eat, including Buongiorno Bakery for breakfast and lunch and Peri Anemon for gyros. Chora has hostels and budget hotels, and Ios Resort, with its pool, bar and social vibe close to the nightlife, is good for meeting people. Mylopotas has affordable rooms too, though many sit up a fairly steep road behind the beach, so expect a climb when you come back from the sand. For nights out, Chora's bars and Far Out Beach Club cost far less than the upmarket Pathos and EREGO clubs near Koumbara Beach.
Can you get around Ios without a car?
Yes, for the main bases and beaches. Ios Local Buses runs regularly between the port, Chora and Mylopotas, and also serves Agia Theodoti, Psathi and Manganari. 2026 prices: a ride from the port to Chora or Mylopotas costs 2,20€, to Agia Theodoti (St. Theodoti) 2,60€, to Psathi Beach 4,40€ and to Manganari Beach 4,50€. Ticket machines sit at the port bus terminal and at the Far Out Beach Club stop in Mylopotas, and it's worth carrying some cash. On the timetable valid from 10 October, the first daily buses leave the port for Chora and Mylopotas at 08:00, Chora for Mylopotas at 08:05, Mylopotas for Chora and the port at 08:20, and Chora for the port at 08:25. Buses starting from the end of the beach leave 5 minutes earlier.
Hotels near a bus stop or within walking distance of Chora are easiest without wheels. Manganari, a group of lovely coves on the south coast, is about 40 minutes from Chora by car or reachable by bus. The island is surprisingly large, with a limited, winding road network, so renting a car is the best way to explore remote corners at your own pace. Taxis are available, and Costa's Moto Club near Mylopotas Beach rents ATVs.
When should you book?
Ios is busiest from July to early September, when the nightlife peaks and international guest DJs play Far Out Beach Club. Prices rise in July and August, so book popular hotels well ahead for those weeks. May, June and late September are quieter and more relaxed. Ferry tickets need less lead time: several ferries run from Piraeus and between Ios and Santorini in summer, and buying tickets once you arrive in Greece works fine.
