Corfu Cruise Port: How to Spend One Day Ashore

Ships dock at the New Port (Neo Limani), on the edge of Corfu Town. The UNESCO-listed Old Town is close to the port, usually described as roughly 1 to 2 miles (1.5 to 1.9 miles (3 km)) away. A walk, bus ride or short taxi trip puts you among Venetian lanes, arcaded cafés and two harbor fortresses, and you lose none of your day to a long transfer across the island.

Where do cruise ships dock in Corfu?

Cruise ships berth at the New Port, northwest of Corfu Town, which also serves as the ferry port. The domestic terminal sits closest to town, next to the roundabout on Ethnikis Antistaseos. The international terminal handles cruise passengers and ferries to Albania and Italy. It lies farther down the road, on the left after you enter the port area.

Depending on your berth, the walk to the terminal can be as short as 5 to 10 minutes. Stick to the marked passenger route from your berth, and hop on the port's internal shuttle if your ship offers one. That shuttle is a separate service from any cruise-line transfer into town, so ask on board which one you're getting.

The terminal has an ATM, car rental desks, a tax-free souvenir shop and free Wi-Fi. The connection slows down when many crew members are online.

How do you get from the ship into Corfu Town?

You can walk, take a taxi, ride the city bus or use your ship's shuttle.

On foot, allow roughly 20 to 40 minutes, depending on your berth and where in town you're heading. Keep the terminal on your left, walk right and follow the waterfront all the way. The route is mostly flat, but it runs along a busy road with little shade, and on a hot day it feels longer than it looks on the map. Past that western edge, you will find the Liston and the Old Fortress a bit further along.

By taxi, the ride to Spianada or the Old Town takes about 10 to 15 minutes, depending on traffic. The official taxi stand is next to the international passenger terminal. The first drivers in line usually wait for passengers who want island tours, so walk down to the end of the queue for cars that take short rides into town. Taxis are usually easy to find, but demand runs high when several ships arrive. Settle the fare and destination before you set off. Some ships run shuttles into town for around 8 euros, while a taxi runs about 10 euros each way, so a taxi can make sense for a larger group.

By bus, the blue City Bus line 15 leaves from the parking lot of the international passenger terminal. It runs to the city bus station on San Rocco Square, the hub for both the blue town buses and the green island buses. From there, the historic streets are a few minutes away on foot. Confirm the current timetable and boarding point before you count on it.

By ship shuttle, find out three things before you leave the terminal: where it drops you, where it picks you up and when the last ride leaves.

A ride into town makes sense in hot weather, or if you'd like to save your legs for the Old Town.

What can you see in one day?

Corfu Old Town is the star, and it's compact. Its roots reach back to the 8th century BC, and Venetian, French and British rule all left their mark. Narrow lanes called kantounia wind between pastel buildings, churches, cafés and small shops. Two Venetian fortresses, the Old Fortress and the New Fortress, flank the harbor.

If you have 3 to 4 hours

Stay in town and walk an easy loop that starts and ends at Spilia, on the western waterfront. First look up at the New Fortress from below, beside the old harbor. Then follow the Campiello lanes, the oldest quarter, to the Venetian Well on Kremasti Square. Choose the wider lanes there if you want to avoid steps. Next come Saint Spyridon Church and its shopping streets. Take a coffee under the Liston arcades facing Spianada, one of Europe's largest squares. Return through Town Hall Square.

The loop covers about 1.6 miles (2.5 km), or 45 to 60 minutes of actual walking. With sightseeing and a café stop, plan on 2 to 3 hours. Walking both ways between the terminal and Spilia adds about 2.5 miles (4 km) and 60 to 80 minutes, so a ride in one direction keeps the morning comfortable.

If you have 7 to 8 hours

Add the Old Fortress, entered from Spianada. Its passages, Saint George's Church and upper viewpoints give you sweeping sea views and a close look at centuries of fortifications. Allow 60 to 90 minutes. The higher viewpoints involve slopes, steps and exposed walking with little shade, so sticking to the lower levels makes for an easier visit.

With a full day you can also fit in one outing beyond town. Choose just one, because combining several distant sights leaves less time ashore than the map suggests.

Kanoni and Mon Repos together take 3 to 4 hours, including transport. From Kanoni you look out over the Vlacherna monastery and Mouse Island. Steps lead down toward the monastery causeway, and the climb back up is harder. A taxi from the port takes about 20 to 30 minutes each way. A Blue Bus also runs from the Liston area to Kanoni, a handy option if its return times suit your call. Wooded paths lead down to the sea, and the former residence holds a modest museum. It's a peaceful alternative to the busier Achilleion Palace, the lavish summer retreat of Empress Elisabeth of Austria.

Paleokastritsa, on the west coast, is a bay of dramatic cliffs and six deep coves with clear turquoise water. Above it stands a hilltop monastery, reached by an uphill approach. The bay is about 15.5 miles (25 km) from the port, or 40 to 50 minutes each way by road, longer in summer traffic. Plan a 4 to 5 hour outing. Short boat trips to sea caves may run, depending on local conditions, and the water can feel noticeably cool. Adding the Lakones viewpoints or Angelokastro turns it into a longer trip, and Angelokastro involves a substantial climb.

Glyfada is a sandy west coast beach, a booked taxi or beach transfer away (allow 30 to 45 minutes one way). Allow 4 to 5 hours in all for the drive, a swim and a meal, confirm your pickup point and time, and follow local advice when waves are up. For a quick dip between sights, the small bathing spots at Faliraki and NAOK near the Old Fortress are close at hand. They are compact town swimming areas, with no broad sandy beach.

How much are tickets to the Old Fortress and museums, and when are they open?

2026 prices: the Old Fortress costs €10, or €5 reduced, and the Archaeological Museum charges the same. The reduced rate applies to Greek citizens and EU citizens over 65, and it is valid from the start of October through the end of May. The combined ticket has been discontinued, so each site needs its own ticket.

From April 1 to October 31, the Old Fortress is open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The Archaeological Museum keeps the same hours but closes on Tuesdays. Last entry at both is 20 minutes before closing. Visitors under 18 are admitted to the Old Fortress when accompanied by an adult. The shop at the fortress entrance is open Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. All state museums and archaeological sites, the Old Fortress included, close on December 25 and 26, January 1 and March 25.

The Archaeological Museum is a 15-minute walk from the Liston and a 5-minute walk from San Rocco Square.

Should you book a shore excursion or go on your own?

The Old Town is close enough to explore independently, so an excursion is optional if Corfu Town is your goal.

A guided experience earns its price in a few situations. On a short call, a walking tour gives you a set route through the highlights. It also helps if you want the history explained or feel nervous about timing. A food tour, wine tasting or olive oil tasting covers lunch and sightseeing in one go. Fans of Gerald Durrell's books can join a Durrells-themed walk through the Old Town.

For Paleokastritsa, an organized excursion is the convenient choice. If you go independently, arrange your return transfer before you set out, because intercity buses are harder to plan and less flexible on a short call.

Whatever you choose beyond the Old Town, from a food tour to a beach ride, book it ahead, since taxis are in heavy demand when several ships are in port.

How do you make it back to the ship on time?

Build your day around the ship's posted all-aboard time, and double-check whether the ship's clock matches local time. On a town day, aim to reach the passenger terminal 45 to 60 minutes before all-aboard, because you still have to clear screening and get to your berth. Head back earlier than feels necessary. The Old Town lanes make it easy to lose track of time, and last-minute shopping can turn into a rush to the port.

For beaches or Paleokastritsa, build in a bigger margin. Summer traffic and scarce taxis can make the return drive slower than the trip out. If you plan to ride the bus back, check the return timetable before you leave and keep a taxi as your backup.

What should you pack?

In summer, carry water, sunscreen and a hat. July and August can feel very hot, particularly around the port and on the fortress walls. Bring something to cover your shoulders and knees for churches and monasteries. Wear shoes with good grip for the cobbled lanes and the worn fortress stone.
