In Chania the evening settles around the old harbour, where the Egyptian lighthouse stands at the end of the quay and the alleys behind it smell of bougainvillea and grilled fish. Forty-odd miles along the coast, Rethymno answers with a Venetian fortress over the rooftops, minarets between the church towers and a long town beach lined with cafés. Both are old Venetian ports on the north coast of Crete, and the choice between them comes down to the kind of vacation you want.

Which is better, Chania or Rethymno?
Neither is better in general. They are two different ways to spend time on the same coast, and they sit close enough to each other that people see both.
Chania is the capital of its regional unit and was once the capital of the semi-autonomous Cretan State, and that past still shows in its mansions, its historical archive and its theaters. Rethymno is the third largest city on the northern coast of Crete and keeps one of the best-preserved medieval old towns in Greece.

Sights, beaches and food
Chania’s sights start with the old town, a maze of stone-built alleys behind the harbour where Venetian mansions stand next to old hammams, minarets and churches. Fountains carry Ottoman inscriptions, and bougainvillea spills over the walls.
The districts of Topanas, Splantzia, Ovraiki and Kasteli each have their own feel and are simply there to be wandered. The old harbour with its Egyptian lighthouse is the most recognizable point in the city, a place to sit and look at the sea.
Rethymno’s old town was almost entirely built by the Republic of Venice, and walking it means passing fortifications, Orthodox and Catholic churches, minarets and old hammams within a few streets. The small Venetian harbour has its own Egyptian lighthouse, the symbol of the city. Above it all, the Fortezza, one of the best-preserved castles in Crete, dominates the old town and looks out over the sea.
On the beach side, Chania’s nearest sand to the old town is Nea Hora, at the west end of the old quarter. Rethymno takes a different approach, with a vast beach running along the town and filled with hotels, restaurants and cafés, so a swim, a coffee and a meal sit side by side. Caretta caretta, an endangered sea turtle, is known to nest on the beach near Rethymno, and a sighting is a chance, never a promise.
The food story is shared. Around Chania, agriculture and tourism are the two main sources of wealth, and the fields grow olives and citrus, with wine, avocados, dairy and honey as other important products. That means plates of olive oil, fresh oranges, local cheeses and honey drizzled over yogurt on both coasts. Expect meze (small shared plates) on the tables of both towns, and raki, the clear spirit, poured after a meal.
For sights, Chania wins on variety, with its districts, its new Archaeological Museum and the Minoan palace of Kydonia now on the UNESCO list. For a beach right in town, Rethymno wins. For a single compact walk through a medieval center capped by a fortress, Rethymno again takes it.
Things to do
In Chania
A day in Chania is mostly a day on foot. Start in the old town and drift through Splantzia and Topanas, then come out at the old harbour to watch boats and the lighthouse. The new Archaeological Museum stands in Chalepa and replaces the former Archaeological Museum of Chania, and the Historical Archive is the second most important in Greece, a sign of how much history the city holds.
Evenings have a cultural side. The Municipal and Regional Theatre of Crete is the most important theatre group in town, and Chania counts five cinemas, three of them open-air, which makes a film under the sky a real option. Tourism here has grown quickly since the early 1970s, so cafés, bars and restaurants around the harbour are plentiful.
In Rethymno
Rethymno’s day starts at the Fortezza and runs down into the lanes of the old town, where you can step into the Archaeological Museum, the Historical and Folklore Museum, the Municipal Gallery L. Kanakakis, the Frantzeskaki Collection and the Museum of Sea Life. The Venetian Loggia houses the information office of the Ministry of Culture and Sports, and a Wine Festival is held there every year at the beginning of July.
Outings leave from the town itself. Boat trips run from the port to the pirate caves near Panormos on a replica of a pirate ship, and a trackless train goes to the area’s sights. Bus tours to Arkadi Monastery are also on offer, and the monastery is where a battle of the same name took place in 1866. It stands on a plateau 14 miles southeast of Rethymno.
Beyond the two towns
Crete holds more than the two old towns. The Samariá Gorge is a National Park of Greece and a biosphere reserve on the island, and Preveli, in the Rethymno region, sits on the south coast. From Rethymno, the Marina is the ferry terminal for Santorini, with direct high-speed catamarans in the high season.
Weather and the best time to go
Summer on this coast is hot and dry, and in Chania the season from April to October brings clear skies, often relieved by the Meltemi, a seasonal north wind. July is the clearest example, with almost no rain and hot afternoons, and the sea breeze is part of how the heat feels. Pack sun protection for these months and plan the longer walks around the old town for the cooler parts of your day.
Winter looks very different. January in Chania brings mild air and a lot of rain, with rain falling on more than half the days, so a rain jacket belongs in the bag. It is the season for museums, theaters and indoor cafés, and for walking the old town between showers.
| Chania | Average high (°F) | Average low (°F) | Precipitation (inches) | Days with rain of at least 0.04 inch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 57.7 | 47.1 | 5.65 | 14.3 |
| July | 88.5 | 72.0 | 0.13 | 1.0 |
Because Rethymno sits on the same coast, between Chania and Heraklion, the broad rhythm of dry summers and wetter winters carries across, and the town’s Fortezza, beach and open-air spaces are summer pleasures. The Wine Festival at the Venetian Loggia falls at the beginning of July, which gives that month an extra reason to visit. Turtle nesting on the beach near Rethymno is another reason to think about the warm months.
For beaches, long days outdoors and festivals, the April to October stretch is the one to aim for. For museums, theater and wandering with fewer hours of heat, the cooler months suit Chania’s districts and Rethymno’s lanes alike. Spring and autumn sit between the two, and both are inside the dry season that Chania’s climate describes.
Getting there and getting around
Chania has the airport. Chania International Airport (CHQ) lies on the Akrotiri Peninsula, a bit northeast of the city, so flying into Chania puts you close to its old town. Rethymno has no airport of its own in this picture, and the usual path is to arrive at Chania or Heraklion and continue along the coast.
By sea, ferries from Piraeus to Chania or Heraklion depart daily at night and arrive early in the morning. During the summer there are also day ferries on the same lines. ANEK Lines, now part of Attica Group, and Minoan Lines are among the providers serving Crete. Rethymno itself connects to Santorini in the high season, with direct Sea Jets high-speed catamarans taking around 2.5 hours from the Marina.
Between the two towns, Chania is about 43 miles west of Rethymno along the north coast, and Chania is about 90 miles west of Heraklion. Rethymno sits between Chania and Heraklion, so it is the natural stop when moving from one to the other. Once there, both towns centre on their old quarters, and the old towns are the places you explore on foot.
In Rethymno, bus tickets must be bought at a shop before boarding public buses. For sights outside town, the area offers bus tours to Arkadi Monastery and a trackless train to the area’s sights, as well as boat trips from the port. In Chania, Nea Hora is the nearest beach to the old town, at its west end.
Who should choose which
Choose Chania if you want a bigger town with many layers: a harbour, four historic districts, Venetian mansions beside Ottoman fountains, a new archaeological museum, a historical archive, open-air cinemas and a theater company. It also makes sense if the airport matters, since CHQ is a bit northeast of the city. Add the UNESCO-listed Minoan palace of Kydonia and you have a stay built around history, evenings by the lighthouse and long meals of local cheese, olives and honey.
Choose Rethymno if you want a medieval old town that is almost entirely Venetian, a fortress that dominates the skyline and a vast beach lined with cafés and restaurants, all in a smaller place. It is also the base for boat trips to the pirate caves near Panormos, tours to Arkadi Monastery and, in the high season, the catamaran to Santorini. The Wine Festival at the start of July suits a summer visit.
You do not have to pick only one. Chania and Rethymno are about 43 miles apart, with Rethymno between Chania and Heraklion, so a trip can start in Chania among the districts and the harbour, then move along the coast to Rethymno for the Fortezza and the beach. Splitting the time gives you both kinds of old town and both Egyptian lighthouses, each a symbol in its own right.
Good to know before you go
Summer on this coast is hot and dry, and the Meltemi, a seasonal north wind, often blows through Chania from April to October, so wind can shape a beach day as much as the sun does. Public buses in Rethymno require tickets bought at a shop beforehand, and ferries from Piraeus arrive in the early morning, so plan the first hours of your stay around that.
